The Carroll Family Goodbye to Nell Rebecca (Carroll) Thornton at Steamboat Wharf - Item #10336

While the drive from Southwest Harbor to Houlton takes just under three hours now, back in 1908 it was a much longer and more logistically challenging journey for Nell Thorton. In this photograph her family is sending her off with wishes for a safe journey which consists of a steamship ride leaving from Southwest Harbor headed for the Maine Central Railroad at Hancock Point by way of Bar Harbor. She would then have ridden the train to Bangor, switched trains there, and finally had a five-hour train ride to Houlton on the Aroostook Railroad. Click here for a photo of the depot waiting room and ticket counter at Steamboat Wharf.
