ECAO/OEL Survey on ESA Permit Process
ECAO and OEL are working on obtaining more contractor experiences with the ESA permit system. While ESA conducts their own surveys, we believe our ECAO/OEL independent survey may be useful in identifying some key issues to be addressed with ESA in the future.

The survey is being conducted by an independent consultant and all answers are anonymous and confidential.

Worker safety, project integrity at stake with no trades enforcement: stakeholders
Since 2009 the prescription, licensing and enforcement of compulsory trades have been the responsibility of the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT), but it was recently learned that the College has not issued notices of contraventions since the Doug Ford government was elected in 2018 with the promise to replace it.

Apprenticeship Training Critical to Ontario’s Future
“My apprenticeship has been a very rich and rewarding experience,” says Christie, a 5th term apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 353. When it comes to electrical work, he has learned how important proper training and oversight is to ensuring work is done safely and correctly. Not only does the apprentice benefit from developing the necessary skills but for contractors, businesses and taxpayers, it pays off as well.

IHSA Safety Talk: Mobile devices while driving
Distracted driving is the number-one killer on Ontario roads. It is responsible for more deaths than impaired driving or speeding. Distracted driving can be caused by using a mobile device while you’re behind the wheel. This includes:

  • Talking or texting on a phone
  • Manually dialling or scrolling through contacts
  • Programming or looking at your GPS
  • Looking at display screens of devices that are unrelated to driving
