Dear Residents -

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the things we are thankful for, many of which we sometimes take for granted. It also happens to be one of my favorite holidays and, like in past years, I will start the morning with a 5-mile run at the Rockland Road Runners’ Turkey Trot for the Marisa Fund at Rockland Lake (dare I say, rain or shine).

This event, which has become the largest running event in Rockland, supports several organizations, including People to People, the Salvation Army and the namesake of the event – the Marisa Fund. David Goldwasser, the Race Director and my friend, established it after the sad and untimely death of his daughter Marisa in 2003. Funds raised will support the research, treatment and care of pediatric cancer patients. For me, this is a powerful reminder to be thankful that I can run “with” (meaning way behind) my children tomorrow. To donate to this worthy cause, click here.

This weekend, the special mailboxes to send letters to Santa Claus are being put out at the Orangeburg Fire House. They will be in front of the firehouse this Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm (see flyer below for more dates and times). If the letter contains the child's name and address on the envelope, I am told that Santa will write back to them!

Senator Bill Weber is hosting a Winter Coat Drive and has placed a collection box in the vestibule at Town Hall until December 15, 2024. He is collecting any new or gently used hats, gloves, scarves and coats for those in need. Please consider helping our neighbors in need during the holiday season.

Mary Cardenas, the Orangetown Historian, and her staff are once again hosting an Annual Holiday Open House at the Historic Salyer House. It will run the four Sundays in December from 1 pm to 4 pm, with each day offering a different perspective of the holiday from days long ago. Admission is free, but registration is required for the children's puppet show. Please click here.

As a reminder, Orangetown Town Hall will be closed on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day and remember to be thankful for the big and little things alike!

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Thanksgiving Dinner Bag Distribution for our Veterans

This past Saturday, Allison Kardon and Carmel Reilly of Supervisor Kenny’s office, Danny Gurniak from Assemblyman John McGowan’s office, and volunteers from Dance Central and the Tappan American Legion, Carl A. Schelin Post 1271, distributed 80 Thanksgiving dinner bags to Orangetown veterans. Thanks to Veterans Angels of Hope for continuing this holiday tradition and to Route 59 Interstate Toyota for their sponsorship. And a special thanks to the Tappan American Legion for supplying coffee and donuts for the volunteers.

The night before Thanksgiving is one of the biggest bar nights of the year. Before heading out to celebrate with loved ones have a plan on how to get everyone home safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over the past 5 years, more people have died in motor vehicle crashes — and more have died in crashes involving alcohol — around the Thanksgiving holiday than over any other holiday period. More than the Fourth of July, Christmas, and even New Year’s Eve, which are more commonly associated with alcohol.

One reason for the large number of Thanksgiving impaired-driving deaths may be that the days around the holiday are increasingly seen as a time to drink alcohol and use drugs, specifically marijuana. The night before Thanksgiving (which some call “Thanksgiving Eve”) has become a time for going out and drinking. Cooking with marijuana (Danksgiving) is apparently a new trend. In any case, no event should ever end with getting behind the wheel if impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Whatever your Thanksgiving holiday plans, make sure you’re planning a sober ride. Remind your family and friends about the safe options available to them. Or offer to be the designated driver. Then you’ll really have something to be grateful for on Thanksgiving: a home full of family and friends who made it to the table because they chose to drive sober.

Don't drive drunk.
