August 2022 Newsletter

Hi Tracy!

Welcome to our ICF Austin September 2022 newsletter! We are thrilled to share with you many great and exciting programs and events we have coming up and to highlight our Programs Committee in the committee spotlight below.

If you weren’t able to join us for our chapter meeting and presentation, we enjoyed a thought-provoking presentation from Pierre Dussault and Peter Scott who discussed “Coaching for Disruption,” including the impact AI will likely have for jobs and leaders in the next 15 years. It was fascinating to consider how we can support leaders through these changes.

Each month, we have the pleasure of connecting with one another, learning from one another, and gaining new insights and tools to help us elevate our coaching for the benefits of our clients and community. See below for many opportunities to engage with our chapter.

Message from the President

Hello, and Happy Autumn!

As we move into the new season, we also have an exciting season of programming ahead of us this month. (I know, that segue was a groaner, but I’m standing by it.) You’ll see below that we have events with the Southeast Region and with the Association for Change Management Professionals (ACMP) coming up this month. Of course, we have our usual fun planned for Virtual Coaching Conversations, Happy Hour Book Club, and our monthly Chapter Meeting.

I’m most excited to begin our new set of programs at the end of the month, DEIJ Spotlight. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) has garnered the spotlight at ICF Global over the last couple of years. We now have a DEIJ statement, a global council, and a guide for chapters

We are kicking off our DEIJ efforts during National Hispanic Heritage Month with a program from our own Dr. Alejandra Mielke, ACC, Secretary and DEIJ Committee Chair for ICF Austin. She will be speaking on culturally relevant coaching as a racial equity practice. I’ve seen her presentation, and we are in for a treat. I hope you can make it on Friday, September 30, at 12 PM.

In merger news, the ICF Lone Star Task Force continues to solidify the governance and financial aspects of what a new, combined chapter would look like. I’m looking forward to sharing our efforts and hearing your feedback as soon as we have finished creating all of our ducks and putting them in rows.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to leadership@icfaustin.org. We are grateful for your membership and your engagement with ICF Austin. Your kind, welcoming, collaborative selves make our coaching community a special place for all of us.

Sincerely,

Tracy Winter

Coaching the human being versus human doing, creating a space for clients to unlock their full potential and live their best life. The practices are rooted in key ICF core competencies and wisdom gleaned over 15 years of coaching practice. This interactive session will share some key practices of whole person coaching and engage participants in conversations to explore the topic further.

DEIJ Spotlight: Culturally Relevant Coaching as a Racial Equity Practice: A Latina Coach Coaching Latina Clients

REGISTER HERE

Culturally relevant coaching is a racial equity practice if we understand racial equity practice as the intentional and continual practice of eliminating disparities that individuals experience because of their race and ethnicity. My Culturally Competent Coaching or Culturally Relevant Coaching aims to do that exactly: eliminate the disparities in access to resources, opportunities, wealth, mental health, etc that historically marginalized individuals—and in my case, Latinas—experience.

Date: Friday, September 30th 12:00-1:00pm

Speaker: Dr. Alejandra Mielke

Committee Spotlight: Programs

Interview with Programs Director Michelle Hefner

The Programs Committee is looking for folks who want to design programming for 2023, plan in-person engagements quarterly, including the Summer and Winter Socials, and learn about the processes for choosing speakers, applying for CCE’s and forming connections with our speakers.

If you’d like to know who you would be working with, here are some fun things to know about our Programs Director, Michelle Hefner.

Why did you join ICF Austin?

I joined ICF Austin to become a part of a supportive community of coaches, to continue this journey of learning and expand my coaching knowledge overall.

What is your #1 goal for the programs committee during your tenure as programs director?

My overall goal was realized at the beginning of this year with the publication of a book of collective knowledge by ICF Austin coaches., “Explorations into the Being and Doing of Coaching.” I initiated this project when I was first elected to the board. The idea came to me as a way to celebrate our 25 years as a chapter.  A true collaboration, this project epitomizes the foundational qualities of ICF Austin’s culture, a culture of support, connection, and collaboration. It embodies our shared value of giving back to our community and profession. After the success of the book publication, the programs committee is focused on building our team and nurturing someone to become the new leader next year.

What makes the programs committee special?

We get to provide members with creative learning opportunities that celebrate ICF Core Competencies, Code of Ethics, and the myriad manifestations of our profession.

Share a day-in-the-life of a programs director.

As programs director, I enjoy taking time to interview potential speakers, getting to know what their passions are, and providing them a platform with which to share their knowledge.  Along with meeting people from around the globe, I work to find ways for our members to connect, learn and network. One new program this year, based on our chapter’s book, is Book Club. Members have the opportunity to take a deep dive into a single chapter of the book, share insights and experiences and earn cce’s in the process.

What are some up & coming programs that our ICF Austin members need to be aware of?

Happy Hour Book Club is the 3rd Friday of each month from 5:30-6:30 pm. Upcoming monthly chapter meetings include Coaching the Human Soul with Sonya Ware in September and Liminal Space as a Relational Field of Opportunity with Lisa Withrow in October.

Why coaching?

As coaches, we hold a sacred space of possibility for our clients. It's a judgment free space of deep listening and inquiry where clients can explore different perspectives and discover the answers they have inside of themselves.  What an honor it is to hold that space!

What are your favorite things about Austin?

I am one of those unicorns who was actually born in Austin.  Having witnessed the transformation of the city over time, I’ve seen the city grow and adapt to changes in creative ways. I love the spirit of downtown, the music scene and all of the fine restaurant offerings we have now.

What is your favorite place to visit in and around Austin?

I love being in nature. One of my favorite places is McKinney Roughs Nature Park. I’ve ridden my horse there for  years. It’s great for hiking, too. In recent years, it has evolved to include ziplining over the canopy of trees, boat rides along the Colorado River, which runs through it and other fun activities for nature lovers.

Share something about you that might surprise others.

I’ve studied French, Italian, Farsi, and Latin. I haven’t had the opportunity to practice my Latin much over the years, though, because the Pope won’t return my phone calls.

Thank you Michelle! Each month, we’ll spotlight a committee so you can learn more about what’s going on with the chapter, our board members, and our current volunteers. And, we’d love for you to join a committee to further your connection with your fellow coaches in meaningful ways.

If you want to join the programs committee or have questions about programs, Michelle would love to hear from you at programs@icfaustin.org.
