Senior Walk

The Cedar Rapids Community Schools Foundation is excited to announce the 2023 series of Senior Walks. This annual tradition allows seniors to walk down memory lane before they walk across the stage to get their diplomas. During the designated times, the graduating seniors will wear their caps and gowns and return to the elementary school where they began their CRCSD education journey. They will then walk through the school halls greeting the elementary students and catching up with their former teachers.

School senior walks will take place between May 15 - 23. To see the full list of dates and times, click here.

School Board Appreciation Month

May is School Board Recognition Month, a time to celebrate the dedicated volunteers who serve on our local school board. Our school board members play a crucial role by providing governance for our district. They provide oversight of the management for CRCSD’s vision, goals, policies, and budgets in order to construct a solid foundation for student achievement.

Join us in saying thank you to the CRCSD board members. The district will spotlight our school board members on social media this month and at the monthly board meeting scheduled for May 8th.

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week is coming May 8th - 12th. Our teachers are critical to driving the success of our children’s education. They are the ones who inspire and guide our kids to become future leaders, make a difference in students' lives, and ignite their passions. Join us next week in saying thank you to all of the CRCSD teaching staff. Each building will be celebrating its teachers in different ways throughout next week. The district will also be spotlighting teachers on social media. To see what your student's school is doing, check out their school's webpage, social media, and/or PTA page.

Last Day of School Reminders

The end of the school year is approaching, and we wanted to remind everyone that our last day of school for students is Monday, June 5th. Since this is the last day of school, it will be an early release for students. Secondary buildings will release at 1:20 pm, and elementary buildings will release at 2:20 pm to begin their summer break. Please note that Friday, June 2nd is also an early release day because it follows our regular Friday schedule. Students will need to take home everything from their desks and lockers, return any school library books they may have, and pay all outstanding fees/fines. Note - All middle school students must turn in their Chromebooks and chargers to their school building before the last day of school.

New School Sport's Physical Form

In March, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) updated its pre-participation examination procedures for high school and middle school student athletes. A physical examination by a licensed healthcare provider is still required in order to participate in all school sports and other identified sanctioned activities. At the physical exam, please have the physician complete this CRCSD Medical Eligibility Form. CRCSD does not need or require a copy of the actual physical exam form. The Medical Eligibility form must then be uploaded to the school's electronic athletics/activities system or turned in to the school office.

Construction Update from Trailside Elementary

There is a flurry of activity at the new Trailside Elementary construction site. A corner of the building that will house the gym and cafeteria is starting to take shape. With nice weather lately creating almost ideal building conditions, the construction crews have also started laying bricks for some of the exterior walls of the new school. Trailside Elementary is the fourth new school building in the CRCSD’s Elementary Facilities Master Plan and is set to open in the fall of 2024.

A Glimpse Around CRCSD

Washington High School staff got the opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual Celebrating Educators of Color Conference held at the University of Iowa with keynote speaker Kurt Russell, the 2022 National Teacher of the Year.

Franklin Middle School’s Jazz Band and Classic Illumination show choir had the opportunity to perform for 4 elementary schools over the past two days. They were able to share their amazing talents and show the younger kids what they have to look forward to in the middle school fine arts programs.

The 3rd grades at Cedar River Academy at Taylor Elementary took a learning expedition to the Noelridge Greenhouses. The students had the opportunity to learn about pollinators and the important work they do. They even helped hatch bees!

Jefferson High School students built and installed a new garden bed for Harrison Elementary, and the Harrison students got to help fill it up with dirt. The neat thing about the garden bed design is that it can easily be taken apart and moved when the new building is complete.

Johnson STEAM Academy 3rd graders traveled to the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History and the Devonian Fossil Gorge to learn more about Iowa's past and the environmental changes that have occurred. The young archaeologists found several fossils, including the teeth of an ancient creature!

The stars were shining this week at Roosevelt Creative Corridor Business Academy as students performed the Broadway classic Annie Jr., under the direction of Jody Nekvinda. The school's therapy dog, Eco, even got involved, playing the part of "Sandy".
