Summer Highlights:

Our teaching artists have been busy this summer! Below are a few highlights.

  • Elizabeth Lau trained with Jackie Lopez of https://versastyledance.org/ at the Bates Dance Festival. Elizabeth also directed a free breakdance program for dancers 6-10 years old taught by Joshua Wright. The program was made possible through a collaboration between Portland Youth Dance and the DEA Educational Fund. Several students in this special program participated in the Maine Hip Hop Summit on August 31st in Portland, which was co-directed by Wright.

  • Scott McPheeters and Liz Mulkey performed at the Subcircles' Annual Barnraiser. Scott also co-directs https://www.subcircle.org/, a residency for performing artists. Subcircle frequently shares guest teaching artists with the lucky students at CBM!

  • Vanessa Beyland served as Assistant Director and Movement Coordinator for OperaMaine's "Aida" production at Merrill Auditorium. Veeva Banga choreographed and was a featured dancer alongside Hannah Ranco in the production.

  • Kate Marchessault guest taught for the Bates Dance Festival Young Dancers Intensive and completed continuing education in the Simonson Method of Teacher Training with Teresa Perez Ceccon in Gloucester, MA & NYC.

  •  Rose Hutchins presented the world premiere of her new ballet, "The Little Mermaid," with an original score by composer Evan Hart Marsh. PYD dancer Eliana Kleiman was a featured dancer in the production.

  • Isabel Ball was a featured soloist in the Performances Art Initiative's In the Room by the Ocean in Rockland, ME. She also performed with Little House Dance at Hewnoaks, where they will participate in a residency later this month.

  • Our Young Dancers Staff, including Rachel Schwartz, Savana Swan, Amanda Preble, Elizabeth Lau, Devonn McKenna, Hannah Ranco, and Kate Marchessault, attended a pedagogy training session with Carly Kasle. Carly holds an MA in Dance Pedagogy from NYU and is fully certified in American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum. She has also taught classes through our adult drop-in program.

  • Allie James had a successful final season as Director of Training Programs for the Bates Dance Festival, where she also taught and performed. She has moved to Philadelphia with her family and will embark on a new career with Dance USA. Below is a picture of a celebratory send-off for Allie after her last class (for now) at CBM.

Stay tuned for our fall adult repertory class offerings!

Programs will begin in early October in preparation for our

Holiday Shows, which will be held on Saturday, December 21.

(Snow Date is Sunday, December 22)

Portland Youth Dance Auditions

Saturday, September 7, from 1-3 pm

Casco Bay Movers

Portland Youth Dance (PYD) is the resident youth company at Casco Bay Movers, offering pre-professional dance training to dedicated dancers ages 10-18 years. PYD has three main tracks: Company, which focuses on modern, jazz, and contemporary forms; Crew, which focuses on hip hop forms; and PYD 2, an exploratory group geared toward dancers 10-18. PYD was founded in 1998 as an alternative to competitive dance and is a 501(c)(3) organization run by a volunteer Board of Directors. PYD’s robust community class program provides access to free/low-barrier dance classes.
