Kroger is pulling its discount circulars from newspapers; going all-digital
Kroger is pulling its circular advertising out of print newspapers and going all-digital.

Paper copies of the chain’s specials will still be available in-store, and consumers can request to have them delivered to their home by calling a toll-free number.

Free webinar next Wednesday examines results of 2023 Local Newspaper Study
A free webinar for members of America’s Newspapers will be held on Wednesday, May 10, at 2 p.m. EDT to provide information about the recently released America's Newspapers Local Newspaper Study. The webinar also will detail the various sales and marketing efforts that will be available to members to support the study.

The national research project is dedicated to how readers consume local news and advertising.

New APG regional president takes reins in Northern Wisconsin
Paul Gaier has joined Adams Publishing Group as its new regional president for Northern Wisconsin, working with newspapers in Eau Claire, Rice Lake, Spooner, Ashland, Sawyer County and Price County.

Nicole Avery Nichols named Detroit Free Press executive editor
The Detroit Free Press has announced the appointment of Nicole Avery Nichols as executive editor. A seasoned journalist and media executive with more than three decades of newsroom experience, Nichols most recently served as editor in chief at Chalkbeat, a nonprofit news organization focused on education in America.

The Janesville (Wisc.) Gazette, affiliate papers, announce news coverage changes
The Gazette and affiliated APG publications across southern Wisconsin have implemented a staffing reorganization that will help ensure readers get the best local news coverage.

Karyn Saemann, editor of The Gazette (Janesville, Wisconsin) since May 2022, will retain that role and has additionally assumed a dual role as regional editor for APG Southern Wisconsin.

LSU names Kimberly Bissell dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication
LSU has named Kimberly Bissell the dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication, effective July 24, pending approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Dr. Angela Jerome named assistant director for School of Media & Communication
Dr. Angela Jerome, communication professor, has been named the assistant director of the newly merged School of Media & Communication in the Potter College of Arts & Letters (PCAL) at Western Kentucky University.

Are news outlets using the wrong metrics to assess sites’ success?
News organizations seeking to measure their websites’ success typically have focused on two metrics: page views and time spent on the site. But data collected and analyzed from the Medill Subscriber Engagement Index indicates that such an approach is misguided.

The data, collected from 106 outlets in various-sized markets, shows that the most important factor in trying to get people to pay for news is reader regularity. What’s more, increases in page views and time spent may actually have a negative impact on subscribers and revenues.

The Times-Picayune | NOLA.com, The Advocate and The Acadiana Advocate have announced a content series with New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr and OOFOS each week throughout the regular season and into the playoffs.

Family and independent owners to hold summer meeting this July in Pittsburgh
The Family and Independent Owners Meeting is designed for the senior executives, owners and family members who are directly involved in their company’s operations.  The meeting provides these executives the opportunity to network and share successful strategies to move their business forward.  From issues related to basic operations, business structures or familial transitions, the Family and Independent Owners Meeting fosters a spirit of partnership and innovation.

The 2023 Summer Meeting will be held at the PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — home of the Pittsburgh Pirates! Sessions will begin Tuesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. EDT, followed by a reception and Pirates baseball game that evening. On Wednesday, July 19, sessions will run from 9 a.m to 12:30 p.m., followed by an optional Pirates game that afternoon.
