Letters to the Editor

49ers Lose 20-17 to Seattle

The 7-6 score at halftime accurately describes what fans at Levi's Stadium witnessed first hand: Defense, Penalties and Fights. Lockett, who has made a career off the 49ers, helped lead Seattle to a FG and

a 3-0 lead. The 49ers came back with Brock Purdy and "Mr. Clutch" Jauan Jennings the main offensive weapons, with Brock scampering in for a 13-yard run to make it 7-3, Niners. An interception of Purdy led to a Seattle FG and a 7-6 score. A huge sack by Gross-Matos (#94), helped stop a Seattle drive.

Flip the 45 over to Side B and you have the same song, with similar music but different lyrics. A Moody FG made it 10-6, but Lockett, Metcalf, Walker and Geno Smith were too much to handle, and Seattle scored for a 13-10 lead. Heroics by "Mr. Clutch" Jauan Jennings propelled the Niners downfield and Brock simply flipped the ball to him in the end zone and S.F. retook the lead at 17-13.

Otherwise, Brock was back to his Fran Tarkenton impersonations as he scrambled to stay alive and find open receivers. Despite some great stops by the D-Line, with Bosa out with a new injury, Seattle took the lead, and the victory, 20-17. George Kittle was sorely missed, as S.F. couldn't generate sustained offense. There was no Ricky Pearsall, only a cameo appearance by Jordan Mason, CMC still hasn't rebounded to top form, Deebo was underused, and while the defense played hard and did what they could, and Seattle's two touchdowns came when Bosa was out, there was no coherent plan in place to stop QB Geno Smith and Co. in crunch time.

Absent an inspirational talk by Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, San Francisco may need a change of leadership on the sidelines. There appears to be a lack of the spark, spirit and creativity which teams need to achieve greatness. Let Joe and Jerry talk to the team before the next game, or, to borrow a legendary local sports announcers' favorite line, "You can tell it goodbye!"

Nothing Left Wanting!

Last issue's 49ers write-up (Sports Today, Issue #563) effectively captures the tension and drama of a closely contested football game, blending detailed play-by-play recounting with colorful commentary.

The use of humor, such as referencing Paul Revere and the Raiders, adds a lively, conversational tone that makes it more engaging for the reader. It balances praise for standout performances—like Brock Purdy's leadership and George Kittle's heroics—with candid acknowledgment of the 49ers' struggles, particularly on special teams and penalties. Overall, it’s an entertaining and informative recap, well-suited for a sports publication audience.

A Love Story

Over the past few years I have had the pleasure of dining with Dave and Patsy Newhouse on several occasions. While Dave has always been held in high regard for his proficiency as an author, I had little knowledge of his wife’s athletic beginnings during an era of little regard for female sports stars. As early as 1950, Patsy was an exceptionally talented athlete and Dave, a sportswriter, was smitten early on! Their love story of 60 years is remarkable and to be admired. Would that we all be blessed with a love like theirs. (To read Dave’s account, see Sports Today, Issue #563.)

Eloquent Tribute

Thanks to Sports Today for including in the last issue that beautiful and heartwarming piece by the sage of Montclair, Dave Newhouse. (Sports Today, Issue #563) Those of us who know Dave knew right away he was describing his lovely wife; but it was how he did it, placing her story in the context of women's' historic uphill struggle for recognition in the world of sports, that made it so special.

Dave has been writing eloquent pieces about sports for 60 years, but to read this tribute to his life partner gave us some insight into the kind of person he is; and that person is very special.

Success!

It is just another giant effort and Dave's piece is a keeper.

Oakland's Eulogy

Foul Smell Triples

Departures

by Dave Newhouse

It’s difficult writing the obituary of a major sports town when the casket isn't firmly closed in the minds of incurable optimists. But Tim Keown is both a realist and a pessimist while standing at the grave site.

“The Raiders leaving kind of closed it out,” he said of Oakland. “An expansion baseball team is a long shot.”

Oakland happens to be a city of long shots in expecting new sports franchises to replace departed franchises. Three have left, and three minor franchises in soccer and baseball are barely taking their place.

"It’s an injustice, a slap in the face,” Keown continued.

Keown has been a senior writer at ESPN The Magazine for 26 years. He has written three books: Bad As I Wanna Be, with Dennis Rodman, Hunting the Jackal, with co-author Billy Waugh about intelligent-gathering missions in Vietnam, Sudan and Afghanistan, and Keown’s first book in 1994: Skyline: One Season, One Team, One City, about high school basketball in Oakland.

He has significant East Bay ties as a Cal alum who has written extensively about Oakland’s vacated big-time sports image. A talented, probing, measured journalist, he feels a sense of sadness in watching Oaktown’s burial.

“It feels so flimsy what the A’s are leaving for, and so abrupt,” he said of the franchise's planned relocation to Las Vegas through Sacramento. “Oakland has had lousy owners, but the fans will support you if you show the effort.”

“I’ll go a step further and say there’s a chance Fisher won’t ever get there,” Keown projected. “Something concrete should

have happened by now.”

To Keown, “Oakland feels like a small town, very ‘underdoggy,' with a chip on its shoulder, Oakland against the world. Oakland is a something that others don’t get.”

That reference includes sports ownerships, commissioners and even ESPN, all of whom, according to Keown, have taken “the easy route, which is just to blame the city for not making it work for any of its three teams.”

He added that Major League Baseball has “helped usher (A’s owner John) Fisher out of Oakland — the ridiculousness of West Sacramento, the uncertainty of Las Vegas, the waiving of the relocation fee….the slipshod way that’s gone on about everything.”

Everything, including the Raiders turning into losers on the gridiron in Las Vegas, and the A’s potentially becoming bottom-feeders as well in Rouletteville.

“I’ll go a step further and say there’s a chance Fisher won’t ever get there,” Keown projected. “Something concrete should have happened by now.”

Fisher has invested $1 billion into construction of a ballpark on a nine-acre site in downtown Las Vegas, with U.S. Bank and Goldman Sachs offering a $300 million loan on the $1.5-million, 33,000-seat domed stadium that’s set to open in 2028.

There is no scenario where the A’s just stay in Oakland?

“Not with Fisher as owner," said Keown. “With him in place, the die is cast. If the new ownership group gets their ducks in a row, the A’s could come back after one year in Sacramento, but would leave for Las Vegas in a couple of years.”

Keown likes Fisher personally as one of the few journalists to interview the A's evasive owner. Keown credits Raiders owner Mark Davis for filling the stadium in Las Vegas. “But the Raiders are rudderless on the field. You’re lost without a good quarterback, and every coach they’ve had there runs into that same problem. It seems that they can’t get out of their own way.”

But Oakland must be held accountable as well, Keown notes, for the three franchise departures.

"There’s enough fault to go everywhere,” he said, “but it’s hard to go from (mayoral) administration to administration, having to get up to speed on all these issues. And a lot of people who run Oakland don’t care about sports.

“It’s hard to believe the confluence of events that led to all of this, like Mount Davis, a poor economic decision. But the way that it all shook out was a lot of people doing nothing. What bothered me in writing about Oakland's losing all three teams were the fans.

"There are a lot of people whose social circle and joy was at the stadium and arena, a common cause that’s been ripped away.”

Ripped into shreds.

Al Attles' Celebration of Life

Above, (l-r) Dean Johnson, Clifford Ray, Bruce Macgowan

There was quite a turnout for the Al Attles' Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 9 at the College of Alameda gym. A lot of familiar faces in the crowd of over 400 people, including such notables as former Warriors Clifford Ray, Jamaal Wilkes, and of course, Rich Barry. Joining them were other Bay Area sports notables like former Warriors TV broadcaster Jim Barnett and former Warriors Chris Mullin and Tom Tolbert, along with the great Dusty Baker who is now retired after nearly 30 years of managing in the big league.

It was great to see all those guys, plus Al’s wonderful wife, Wilhelmina, and his son, Al Jr., who helped put the event together. There was music, dancing and lots of stories about Mr. Attles who was so loved and respected by all of us who were lucky enough to have crossed his path.

Tears and laughter and lots of hugs from many of Al’s good friends. Great memories of a man who lived nearly 88 years and spent over 60 of those years with the Warriors. Al Attles will be missed!

David Prowse -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

I met former British bodybuilder and weightlifter David Prowse at a Star Wars Behind The Mask convention here in San Francisco many years ago before 2000. Up until that point I never knew what the man behind Darth Vader's mask looked like. He was very nice to all the fans who showed up. He had a British accent but it was nothing close to Darth Vader’s voice, which was provided by James Earl Jones. I have since been able to collect over 80 Star Wars related autographs from all the movies and series.

Hardly Trivial by T. Buff

At this writing, the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers are off

to a 14-0 start. Only 15 teams in NBA history have opened the season with a winning streak of

10 games or longer. Three teams have gone

on to win an NBA title.

Everyone knows the Golden State Warriors opened the

2015-16 NBA season on a 24-game win streak and

won 39 of its first 43 games before finishing

with an NBA-best 73-9 record.

Do you remember the Cleveland Cavaliers won the

NBA Championship that year, defeating the

Warriors, 4-3, in the championship series?

My Hardly Trivial question is:

What NBA team holds the record for most

consecutive wins during a season?

-- See Answer Below --

or more wins fared in those seasons)

Further Adventures in Da-le Gas

by Howard Pearlstein

Three games from last week: 49ers at Tampa Bay, Bay FC vs Washington Spirit, and the Dubs vs Mavericks. All had moments of Da-le Gas, life-coaching advice that came from Houston’s Tejano car culture in the 70s. When everything’s working and purring like a happy kitty, Give It Gas! Good things will happen.

The specific kitty I had in mind was the biggest cat that purrs, a puma, a happy puma getting its belly rubbed. Been there, did that, and it remains one of my life’s most memorable moments.

Sounded like the Triumph 650 I’d ridden years before and almost as loud. (Not a Harley – different sound.) A very happy very big kitty.

There was a perfect example in the 'return of Klay Thompson' Mavericks game. It was up-and-down close, double-digit leads changing repeatedly until the last seconds, and the Dubs were only up by one, which wasn’t going to be enough. Not with all the threes Klay and the Mavs were dropping. Steph was going for a three, but jumping right and jumping left, was still close covered by Doncic. Draymond pulled Doncic away and Kyrie moved in, but that split-second moment was enough for Steph to make it.

And the Da-le Gas moment? It was because we all KNEW he’d get it off over Kyrie’s block, and KNEW it was going to drop in nothing but net. Bumped the lead up to four points. 26 seconds left. Steph went “night-night.” Mavs’ Grimes made a 3-pointer. Didn‘t matter, it was over. Grimes fouled Steph. Steph made both shots. Dubs won 120-117. When everything’s working as it should, Dale Gas.

Even more so, Friday’s win over the Grizzlies. Lots of full-tilt boogie movement and more nifty plays than I could count.

But that one play! Podz’ amazing impossible three-quarter court assist to Kuminga!

Holy S&##!

It looked casual, almost off-hand and it will live forever in Dubs’ highlight reels.

When you’ve got it going, Da-le that M-F gas!

Side note: it’s not “The Bench.” 10 – 12 player rotation averaging 58 points per game. Call that a Bench? Hell, no. It’s Swing Shift for Starters.

Then the NWSL playoffs, BAY FC vs Washington Spirit. Bay played them tough, 0-0, until Ashaola scored the first goal 80+ minutes in. The Spirits came back shortly after, tying it up.

But the loss was a fluke. Spirit’s striker put one into the goal-line cluster of players. It grazed the head of a Bay defender and went in for a Spirit score. The engine was running perfectly but the mojo wasn’t with them yet.

And the 49ers, watching them come off the bye week and answer some questions. Would Christian play and if so, how many plays? Yes, and a lot. How many players were ready to play? Deebo? Yes. Kittle? Yes. Was Jennings the actual “next man up”? Yes, definitely. And Moody was back. Except he wasn’t BACK.

He missed three field goals, including one which was barely more than a chip shot. Any one of those would have kept the lead intact. And then, after the long drive Purdy took to the red zone and when stopped short of the goal line, it was Moody again. And all of us were unsure – please please please, hoping maybe Fourth Time’s the charm. He made it, just barely.

It doesn’t matter who natters about sloppiness or quibbles about missed passes. But it was, because they won a game they shoulda lost instead of what they’d been doing before, which was losing games they shoulda won.

So wottehell, boss, I say it’s Da-le Gas.

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 106: Should Athletes Be Signing School NIL Contracts Contingent On House Settlement Approval?

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

It's November 2024.

Judge Wilken will not be determining whether she is providing final approval to the House v. NCAA settlement agreement until April 7, 2025, unless the hearing is continued.

That's not stopping schools from beginning to court players into signing agreements that would only be valid and binding on them if the settlement agreement receives final approval from Judge Wilken and the terms become effective immediately (when approved) or before the Fall 2025 athletic calendar starts.

Arizona is one of those schools. The 7-page agreements that Arizona is sending to prospective enrollees only become effective if revenue-sharing under the House settlement is in place before July 1, 2025. Some schools have put together these sorts of non-binding (but potentially binding) letters of intent that are as long as 27 pages. Imagine how many athletes hire competent counsel to review and provide guidance about these documents. Probably not many, which is a shame.

As stated in Vol. 104, some NIL collectives are preparing for Judge Wilken to issue final approval of the House settlement and are including clauses in their contracts that permit the collective to assign payment rights to the schools they benefit, which would in turn allow the schools to pay out under the House-imposed revenue-sharing cap. I'm good with that.

But let's go back to schools that are already pushing documents that contemplate direct payments, from the schools to players. These agreements would be helpful to the extent that they are crafted with athletes' interests in mind. A vanilla-styled agreement that isn't one-sided in favor of the athlete or the school would make negotiations quicker and smoother. Maybe that's coming. For now, there's no consistency.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Announces Race Groups, IROC and Formula One Exhibition

Entry Applications Open December 2

The IROC Series centered around the all-star driver lineup as seen here at Michigan International Speedway in September 1977. Al Unser, Mario Andretti, Darrell Waltrip, Johnny Rutherford, and Richard Petty led the way. Unser went on to win the 50-lap race.

MONTEREY, Calif., Nov. 12, 2024—For drivers, collectors and automobile enthusiasts, Aug. 13-16, 2025 has already been highlighted on their calendars for the historic racing event of the year—the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion that will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Formula One®. Complementing the F1 celebration will be many of the popular classes that have made the Rolex Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca one of the world’s most prestigious motorsport lifestyle gatherings.

Exciting new additions to the Rolex Reunion are two groups that will provide immense fan engagement. A special Formula One exhibition will showcase cars through the ages—from the earliest years to contemporary with modern technology—to honor the history and progression of these sleek, high-revving machines that have raced at the highest level of international competition.

The high-pitched revs of F1 will be a stark contrast to the deep-throated rumble of cars from the original IROC (International Race of Champions) series, which held races from 1973 to 2006. For the first time since 2002, IROC will return to the West Coast with an incredible display of authentic IROC race cars, with many being piloted by past IROC competitors from NASCAR, Formula One, IMSA, INDYCAR and Trans-Am.

The IROC series brought together the greatest drivers from all forms of motorsport to race purpose-built, identical cars to eliminate any advantages based on equipment. Various iconic makes and models were used during IROC’s 30-plus year history, including Porsche Carrera RSRs, Chevrolet Camaros, Dodge Daytonas, Dodge Avengers, and Pontiac Firebirds.

Cal Bears

Jaivian Thomas scored on a 75-yard touchdown run

in the second quarter.

Bears Fall To Syracuse, 33-25

Late Comeback Falls Short

BERKELEY – The California football team made it a one-score game after falling behind by 20 points Saturday, but the Golden Bears ultimately fell to Syracuse 33-25 at California Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback Fernando Mendoza connected with wide receiver Jonathan Brady on a 5-yard touchdown pass with just over one minute to play to trim the deficit to eight points, but the Golden Bears (5-5, 1-5 ACC) couldn't recover the ensuing onside kick, and the Orange were able to run out the clock.

"We definitely got outplayed today – there's no doubt about it," Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said. "We had to play well in order to win, and we did not play well and they did. It's very disappointing on our part."

Cal got rushing touchdowns from Jaivian Thomas and Jaydn Ott, and Ryan Coe connected on a 44-yard field goal as the Bears remained one win shy of qualifying for a bowl game for the second consecutive season.

Kohler quickly doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 23rd minute after stealing an errant pass in the UCSB defensive end and lacing a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal for her fourth tally of the season.

After taking a 2-0 lead into the break, freshmen Kohler and Eleanor Klinger keyed the first of three second-half goals for the Cardinal in the 53rd minute. Kohler played a ball onto Klinger, who received the pass, cut it to her left and sent a perfect ball to Kitahata in the box. University of Pacific Tigers

Women’s Basketball Excels in Win over Long Beach State

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific women's basketball held Long Beach State to 3-for-28 from the field in the second and third quarters to put together a convincing 81-65 winning effort over Long Beach State on Friday night in the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Entering the second quarter, Pacific (2-1) trailed 27-24 after conceding 10-of-17 attempts to the Beach (1-1) in the previous quarter. What followed was a dominant defensive effort from the Tigers in which the team held Long Beach to 2-for-16 from the quarter and an 8:02 drought between Beach field goals and a 4:21 scoring drought period.

In that eight-plus minute span, Pacific scored 13 points to take a three-point lead behind the explosive play of junior Lauren Glazier. The junior came off the bench to hit four field goals in the quarter to give her 14 points heading into halftime. A three-pointer from sophomore Nyah Lowery fight before the halftime buzzer put Pacific up 40-34 going into the break.

Out of the break Pacific's defensive intensity continued as LBSU was held without a field goal until the 2:14 mark of the third quarter while conceding just five points in the frame overall. Given the cushion, the Tiger offense threw up 13 more points to expand the lead to 14, again relying on the post to spark the rally.

All-CCAA Men’s Soccer Honors Awarded to Three Pioneers

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – The 2024 All-CCAA Men's Soccer All-Conference individual awards were announced on Wednesday. Three members of the Cal State East Bay men's soccer program were named All-CCAA Honorable Mention, including Drew GibbonsAlan Gutierrez and Eugenio Perez-Vera Merino.

Drew Gibbons

CCAA postseason awards are nothing new to Gibbons. The 2024 season marks the third consecutive year in which Gibbons was named All-CCAA Honorable Mention. He is a leader on the Pioneers and has started all 18 matches in 2024. On October 6, he scored the game winner and added an assist in a 3-1 win at Sonoma State. Facing nationally-ranked Cal State LA, his penalty kick goal in the first half and equalizing header in the 83rd minute helped the Pioneers play to a 3-3 draw for a point in the standings which proved to be important at the end of the regular season.

Eugenio Perez-Vera Merino

Also playing his first season at East Bay was Perez-Vera Merino. The junior defender from Leon, Spain led the Pioneers in minutes (1,591) and started all 18 matches, playing all 90 minutes in 16 of them. The recipes are explicitly presented.
