Winter Break Course: UNIV 492

We are excited to connect with service-minded students through our two-credit online course! The CSL will be offering "UNIV 492: Special Projects in the Community" from December 19-January 27!


UNIV 492 deepens students' understanding of community-engaged work by introducing knowledge and skills needed to carry out effective and ethical service efforts.

Student Presentation Highlight:

Kansas Service & Civic Engagement Conference

The Kansas Service & Civic Engagement was held on November 10, giving civically-minded students the opportunity to discuss and learn from each other's campus service learning and civic engagement initiatives.


The conference's goal was to provide students with insight into how their fellow students in the Kansas area are making a difference in their communities, as well as to enable them to network with other students and faculty on methods to effect change.


There were 8 student presentations by 12 presenters, including 8 KU students. Thanks to Sanah Shabbir (Applied Behavioral Science), Lina Garces Davila (Educational Psychology), Nafiza Akbar (Public Health), Max Lillich (Political Science), Murtaza Shoaib (Psychology), Faran Zufer (Behavioral Neuroscience), Ayah Wakkad (English Literature)

and Matt Kleinmann (Architecture) for presenting at the conference.

Community Partner Spotlight: 

Center for Supportive Communities

The Center for Supportive Communities (CSC) is looking for skilled college students to work directly with elementary, middle, and high school students participating in SupportED, a community-based, behavioral diversion program for truant children and youth in Douglas County, Kansas.


SupportED Mentors use functional mentoring, implement behavioral interventions, and work alongside families and schools in a collaborative effort to divert children from the legal system. CSC’s supportive and scientific approach cultivates healthy youth development and sustainable behavior change so all young people have equal opportunities to live fulfilling lives.


Position Dates: January – May 2023


Time Requirements: You can choose to dedicate 5, 10, 15, or 20 hours each week.

Service Learning Opportunity: 

Certificate in Service Learning

We invite you to consider earning a Certificate in Service LearningDuring the 2021-2022 academic year, 57 students were awarded a certificate in Service Learning. Obtaining your certificate involves taking classes, engaging in volunteer work, and reflecting on your service learning experiences. Once you have earned the certificate, it is acknowledged on your official academic transcript. 


There are a multiple steps to complete the Certificate in Service Learningmake sure you visit our website to learn more about where you are in the process or where to start if you are just beginning! The deadline to apply to graduate from a certificate in any semester can be found on the Office of the University Registrar's calendar as "Undergraduate Application for Graduation Deadline."


You can apply to graduate from the Certificate program as soon as all of the requirements are completed, even if that is before you graduate from KU!

Alternative Breaks

 Alternative Breaks provides immersive volunteer experiences that educate students and foster a life long commitment to service!



Their mission is to provide students with hands-on service learning and volunteer opportunities in the community and across the nation. Students participating in Winter Break or Spring Break programs can enroll in the CSL's UNIV 492 course to earn course credit for the experience.

Fellowship Opportunity Spotlight:

Newman Civic Fellowship

The Newman Civic Fellowship honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. The current Newman Fellow for KU is Abeer Iqbal, an undergraduate student majoring in behavioral neuroscience with a minor in social justice in the U.S.


Newman Civic Fellows are recommended to Campus Compact by college and university presidents/chancellors to acknowledge motivation and ability in public leadership.


The program offers the chance for public national recognition, special scholarship and career opportunities and opportunities to present or publish work through Campus Compact
