Coming this spring:
RI Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks
RIHPHC is collaborating with the Rhode Island Advisory Commission on Historical Cemeteries (RIACHC) on RI Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks in April - May 2022. The volunteer-led commission presents dozens of cemetery clean-ups, gravestone conservation demonstrations, and tours across the state each spring. RIHPHC will work closely with RIACHC to organize additional free programs that raise awareness about Rhode Island's historic cemeteries and promote their preservation.

RI Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks will be offered in place of the 2022 RI Historic Preservation Conference. With a new partnership and free outdoor statewide programs, we are excited about this new opportunity!
Call for programs

RIHPHC and RIACHC welcome your proposals for RI Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks. Program types include tours, clean-ups, conservation demonstrations, documentation projects, themed walks--you name it. If you already work with the RIACHC, please contact Christine MacWilliams. Otherwise, use this webform to share a proposal.
Best wishes, Enerida
Enerida Ademi will depart RIHPHC to accept a new position in the GIS field for a private firm in Connecticut. She began her GIS career at RIHPHC in 2018, with a focus on providing accurate locations of historic properties and mapping archaeological sites. As the Data Control Clerk, she updated all of the State Register properties for the Historic Properties Database and processed State Register plaque requests for property owners. RIHPHC is thankful for her efforts to launch our GIS program and wish her all the best.
Great State Properties
We're profiling some of Rhode Island's most historically significant State-owned properties.

The Rhode Island State House in Providence is the seat of State government and a magnificent example of American Renaissance architecture. The renowned architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White won a national competition to design Rhode Island's capitol building in 1892, and construction was completed in 1904.

Did you know there's an organization dedicated to its "restoration, preservation, interpretation, betterment and benefit?" Established in 1992 by Governor Bruce Sundlun, the Rhode Island State House Restoration Society has undertaken many important projects at the "most admirable" Rhode Island State House.

What's the latest?

Visit the RI State House Restoration Society website for the latest announcements, events, and discoveries. Also follow The Snowtown Project and their efforts to research and interpret the 19th-century mixed-race neighborhood formerly located in the area of the State House. This collective project produces tours, talks, and publications to share their work.
