A Message
from MAYOR MARGOT GARANT

As I enter my 14th year of service to the residents of Port Jefferson, I am humbled and gratified every day to represent you and work to keep Port Jefferson a beautiful and safe place to live.

There have been a lot of challenges that I faced in the last 13 years; from the closure of the LIPA power plant, negotiating our tax glide path, working with the EPA to remediate the toxic plume created by Lawrence Aviation, hardening our shorelines after the destructive storms (Irene and Sandy) that continue to attack our coastlines; keeping us United despite a changing culture that seems to want only to divide.

It has always been my call to arms to protect this community both from a public safety standpoint and to protect and preserve our assets to ensure they are in good repair and functioning at their highest purpose. There’s been a lot of discussions recently about the bluff bond - a discussion that has been going on since 2015, when we first started our work. We hired the coastal engineer to work with the DEC on proper permits. None of this work has been done behind a closed door as it took five years to procure a permit from the DEC and hundreds of thousands of dollars of planning. We will continue in our efforts to protect the bluff to preserve our beaches and discuss options for the upland slope.

Prior to Covid, there were NO exceptions for public meetings other than attending the Board meetings once a month. We have worked around that by live-streaming meetings, videotaping meetings, posting information to our website, and sending out this monthly communication. There are many options and avenues by which you can participate - including scheduling a meeting to sit down one on one. I will remain steadfast in my efforts to do what’s right for this community at large. My commitment is to you and to no other.

I hope you enjoy this beautiful summer and remain grateful for the treasures that we have and the work that the Board performs every day to maintain the beauty we enjoy in our beautiful home, Port Jefferson.

CELEBRATIONS ABOUND
Jubilation, Admiration, and Appreciation
The 4th of July Fireworks and Parade are family activities that create lifelong bonds and memories. It's one of those traditions so ingrained in our family life that it leaves a little hole when we go without them (2020).

This year's Fireworks were once again spectacular! Families played on the beach while waiting for the fireworks, young couples strolled the shoreline, and our seniors could enjoy themselves worry-free.
The Fire Department Parade was enjoyed by all ages. We are so proud of our civic groups that it makes it a joy to celebrate them! The parade went off without a hitch again this year! There were plenty of firefighters, marching bands, exciting cars, and dancers to entertain us all. We even had some furry friends come out with their owners to enjoy the festivities!

This year's celebration was once again one for the record books! It looks like we got it right again...
THE SENSATIONAL SIX
Courageous, dedicated, and now famous!
Six Port Jefferson High School Graduates have done the extraordinary! They are a praise-worthy example of everything we want our children and community to be and they did it because they felt it was the right thing to do.
Kasumi Layne-Stasik, Andrew Patterson, Hunter Volpi, Shane Hartig, Ryan Parmegiani, and Peter Rizzo sprang into action when the fire siren went off and alerts started sounding and vibrating on their cellphones at the end of their graduation ceremony. The young firefighters went from throwing their caps in celebration to running to help. Their quick actions kept the fire at a garage on Arlington Avenue contained and prevented any further damage.

Christian Neubert, the Port Jefferson assistant fire chief, and teacher in the PJ School district, was on duty on graduation day. He was very impressed with the calm and deliberate manner that the young firefighters conducted themselves. Most of the six started as junior firefighters at the age of 14 and the department was proud to see their training kick in!

June 24th was a double milestone day for these young graduates. They went from one high point in their lives to another. “The student's bravery and call to service are beyond exceptional.  Another hero in this story is Christian Nuebert for his leadership in mentoring and training these students. His example personifies the best of “all things Port Jeff” said Mayor Margot Garant.

The news of their heroic efforts traveled far and wide. They received coverage from local and national media outlets. They were covered on Newsday, ABC7, Washington Post, World News with David Muir and Good Morning America to name a few.
These young people have a world of possibilities in front of them. They are the feel-good story in a time of great challenges. We are so proud that our community is being highlighted for Kasumi, Andrew, Hunter, Shane, Ryan, and Peter’s bravery, dedication, and selflessness.

We are proud of your actions and cant wait to see what is next for these extraordinary young Port Jefferson graduates!
from Deputy Mayor Kathianne Snaden
Summer is in full swing and I'd like to congratulate the graduating class of 2022! The senior class celebrated with another jaw-dropping prom! The spooky "Royal Mansion" was something to behold!
When we were told the Prom committee wanted to bring back the red carpet event at the high school but were having logistical issues, we were happy to help! Together with Code, DPW, and the committee, we made it work! Big thank you to all that assisted in giving the kids a night to remember!

While we are all enjoying the summer, preparations have already begun for Homecoming on October 8th. Another fantastic collaboration between the
School District and the Village is sure to
result in a fun filled event for students, alumni, residents, and businesses alike with activities such as a golf outing, dance, pre-game activities, parade, and more! Stay tuned as details come together.

With public safety always being one of my top concerns, be on the lookout for additional code officers out and about in vehicles, on foot, and on bicycles. Don't forget, if you see something say something. Our officers are happy to help with any concerns. And of course, in an emergency always call 911 first.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy summer!

MAKING MEMORIES
Thank you for your efforts!
We are proud to live in a community that is continually creating wonderful memories. Those great memories are not possible without the help of many departments, organizations, and individuals. Please join us in expressing gratitude to the following departments and organizations:

  • The Port Jefferson Fire Department - Chief Soren Lygum
  • The Parks Department - Dave Melious
  • The Recreation Department - Rene Lemmerman
  • The Code Department - Chief Fred Leute
  • And all of their teams

These departments were instrumental in planning and implementing the PJHS Prom walk-up at the high school, the 4th of July fireworks, and the PJFD parade. They did a fantastic job setting up all aspects of these events throughout the weekend. Their hard work is apparent in how smoothly all of the events were. In several cases, people shared that they were the most well-run events they have seen.

Our community is a beautiful place because of all of these teams' generosity of time and talents! They make it possible for us to provide opportunities like these for our residents yearly and bring joy to everyone in the community!
We are proud of the synergistic relationships between all aspects of our Village. This type of teamwork propels our beautiful Village to be a destination for a lifetime.
Join us to thank all of these amazing people for their continued support and dedication. We can't wait to do it all again next year!
COLLABORATION EFFORTS FOR SAFER SCHOOLS
Looking out for our children
We proudly announce the continued cooperation between Port Jefferson Village and the Port Jefferson School District. The two parties signed a five-year agreement for continued collaboration. The agreement allows the Village Code Department to assist in public safety efforts on school properties. This initiative began in 2019, under the leadership of Deputy Mayor Kathianne Snaden. The school district negotiated the agreement with Village Attorney Brian Egan who finalized the inter-municipal agreement.

As a result, code officers conduct regular patrols through all school properties and, additionally, whenever called upon by the school district.

The Village is pleased that our relationship has been solidified for another five years and that we will continue to work together. We look forward to continuing our strong partnership in the future.
from Trustee Stan Loucks
Happy Summer!
The golf membership has grown to over 630 members. We are excited that so many golfers are enjoying our course! At our business meeting tonight, we formally appointed Pat Sullivan as the country club's golf superintendent.
We also appointed Jeff Welischer as assistant superintendent. They will keep our course performing at the highest level.

We have placed a shed at Texaco Park with paddles, balls, and nets for playing pickleball. If you want to play, you will need to set up the supplied nets, and please put them back in the shed when you are finished.

We have a new art show exhibited on the second floor of the Village Center. This show is from the Night Heron Artists and
will run until August 25th.

At the present time, we are offering pickle ball, floor hockey, tennis lessons, watercolor painting classes, yoga, and fitness classes. For details and to register, please visit our website portjeff.com and click on recreation.

We are also offering the following youth programs; summer camps, movies on the harbor, new shows on the Jill Nees Russell stage, tennis, and music classes. Again, please visit our website.

I want to extend thanks to the Parks Department, our Code Officers, and Renee Lemmerman for all their work in bringing us the fireworks and a super parade. This 4th of July weekend would not be possible without the expertise of these people.

SENIOR ART SHOW
Get creative with us!
We want to share with you a little magic that happens at our Village Center. Every Wednesday morning, beginner to advanced artists work hard on creating beautiful art. Art Director, Beth Rothstein is teaching watercolor painting to our seniors. The classes are about art and expression, but it's also about friendships and collaboration. These classes have that magical element of engaging with our community that has taken this new program to another level.

Art is a great way to meet new people and learn about expression. It can also help you understand different perspectives on art and life. It can often positively affect our mental and physical health; it can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve self-esteem and confidence, promote creativity, and increase empathy for others' experiences and ideas.

Come take the class, enjoy yourself, and experience the magic! There are classes taught by Ms. Rothstein on Wednesdays and a newly added Thursday morning class to meet the demand. The classes run every six weeks. Go to portjeff.com/programs to sign up. You will learn something new while meeting new people who share your interests—and have fun doing it!
AWARD WINNING ARTIST
Showing in the Village Center atrium
The Village Center is a vibrant community space located at the heart of our Village. It serves as an event venue, a place to meet friends, relax with a good book and enjoy the fresh air. The art in the atrium at the Village Center helps create a delightful atmosphere. This month, please take a minute to appreciate the beautiful origami sculptures in the atrium created by and courtesy of artist Karen Celella. "Fine art photography, origami, quilling, paper art, and mixed media are my current passions. Each one enhances a different aspect of my life." expresses Karen. "My works have been in many exhibits and contests, being honored with many awards."

Each of the three pieces in the atrium is designed to represent nature, symbology, or emotions. "Senbaruzu is the folding of 1000 cranes symbolizing love, hope, healing, and joy. The cranes hold the strongest positive energy I can pass on to the world." Karen shares.

Piece one is called "Red metallic spiral 2952". It is a 21 "x 80 "long spiral mobile of 1001 origami cranes folded from 3-inch squares of metallic paper.

Next is "This Way 2918". It measures 40" wide by 80" long. The curtain has 1000 origami cranes folded from 3-inch squares of medium-weight glossy colored and pattern papers in an arrow-shaped design.

"Red White and Blue 4553" is a 21" diameter spiral hoop of 1050 red, white, and blue origami cranes folded from 3-inch squares of medium-weight paper.

Art is an essential part of our lives. We all have different tastes and interests when it comes to art, but there is no doubt that it has the power to transform, inspire and heal us. So if you have a few moments, check out Karen's art. We know it will have an impact.

Happy July, neighbors! This month started with a bang- or a series of them- in the Village's stunning fireworks display, followed by the Port Jefferson Fire Department's patriotic parade, our local Cub Scout Pack 41 raising a historic 46-star flag in front of Village Hall, and a humbling swearing in ceremony for myself and fellow incoming Trustee Lauren Sheprow. I am truly honored to be entering my second term as your Trustee, and I look forward to working alongside my fellow Board members to build upon the dialogues and productivity of the past two years.

As I knocked on your doors, I fielded hundreds of questions and thoughts regarding the Country Club $10 million bond and the retaining wall projects. When I relayed a summary of these thoughts and concerns to my fellow Board members at Tuesday's Board of Trustees meeting, the Board expressed a desire to hear directly from the residents.
As such, whatever your opinions or questions might be, we invite you to email all of us (email addresses can be found at the bottom of this newsletter) with your
thoughts on these matters. With resident input, the Board can most accurately carry out the will of the Village at large.

There will be a free, interactive program at the PJV Beach Street Community Garden this Saturday, 7/9, from 9am-11am. All are welcome to come walk through the garden as expert organic gardener Shamma Murphy of SOS for your Soil shares tips and tricks, and answers any participant questions. Spread the word!

I hope to see you at some of our exciting events later this month, including the Harborside concert and film series, Port Paws Dog Festival on 7/23-24, and Port Palooza music festival on 7/30. How lucky are we to have this all (and more!) in our backyard? Make the most of your long, festive summer days, Port Jeff!

Enthusiastically,

ORGANIC GARDENING 101 + Q&A
 A valuable program
On Saturday, July 9th, from 9:00 - 11:00 am, we have the knowledgeable and engaging Shamma Murphy coming to the Beach Street Garden for an interactive program. The conversation will focus on general organic gardening tips, with plenty of time for Q&A to help with your gardening goals. This program is free to attend for any and all, so invite friends and neighbors! Any voluntary donations from attendees will be put towards future garden improvements and programs.

We appreciate the Port Jefferson Harbor Arts and Education Conservancy as our nonprofit partner in these community endeavors.
ROCKETSHIP BATHROOMS
Grand Re-opening
Rocketship Park is an excellent place for families to spend time together. The park boasts many amenities, including tennis courts, basketball courts, a playground, and a magnificent covered seating area. It is also home to the newly renovated Rocketship park bathrooms. They feature no-touch components like auto flush, automatic paper towel dispensers, and hand motion water faucets. Heated plumbing will allow the lavatory to be open year-round for an added bonus.

These upgrades are a welcome addition to the Rocketship park facilities making our beautiful Village even more enjoyable.

The bathrooms will close every evening at 7:00 pm. The original plan was to have a later closing time, but the restrooms were vandalized four days after they opened back up. The Board of Trustees proactively voted for an earlier closing time to protect our valuable asset and ensure that the families visiting Rocketship park can use our Village amenity worry-free.

If you see any vandalism on any Village properties or anywhere in Port, PLEASE say something. Together let's take steps to create a safer and more beautiful Village.
Call code 631- 774-0066 to report any suspicious activity.
from Trustee Lauren Sheprow
Thank you again for entrusting me with the role of Trustee. I have already taken steps to begin the transition from campaign promises to taking action, and look forward to reporting on the progress at upcoming meetings and via this e-report. There is a great deal to understand with any new position, and onboarding as a Village Trustee is no different. It will take me a little time to fully understand the roles and responsibilities and the culture of the workplace that is the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, so bear with me. If there is interest in the work I report on here, please contact me directly at trustee-sheprow@portjeff.com.

I was thrilled to be asked by Mayor Garant to serve as Commissioner of two exciting areas at the July 5 reorganization meeting: Recreation and Communications. I bring several different perspectives to the Recreation team, having spent many years competing at an elite-level in amateur and professional racquetball, and working as a Marketing and Communications executive for an international tennis tournament in Miami.

I also served on the Village Recreation
Committee and volunteered as a youth baseball coach in the Village. So I’m looking forward to meeting with Trustee
Loucks and the entire Recreation team so I can gain a comprehensive understanding of the Department and work with the staff, community members and volunteers to continue to build on the great success this Department has achieved.

I’m also looking forward to serving as the first Trustee Commissioner of Communications. It’s a role in which I can tap into the nearly four decades of experience I gained working as a strategic communications executive, most recently at Stony Brook University and Mather Hospital. First I’ll be developing for approval a “roles and responsibilities” document for the Communications Commissioner – the first of which is overseeing a comprehensive strategic planning effort. I have the tools to get started on that process immediately and once complete, I will work with the appropriate staff to develop a comprehensive strategic communications plan for the Village of Port Jefferson for review and approval by the Mayor and BOT so everyone is on the same page. More to come!

HISTORIC 46-STAR FLAG
Honored and respected by the Boy Scouts
Boy Scout troops 41 (with elementary school-aged scouts) and 45 (with middle and high school-aged scouts) had the honor of raising our historic 46-Star Flag after the Fire Department's annual 4th of July Parade. The scouts raised this rare 13'x6', 46-Star US Flag, made between 1908 and 1912. It flew over the Port Jefferson Post Office in the early 1900s. It is a hand-sewn linen flag that made it through two world wars. The Lee Squires family (descendants of prominent Port Jefferson businessmen Charles A. & Charles W. Squires) passed it down through the generations until they donated it to Port Jefferson.

The scouts were there to honor and respect this amazing piece of Port Jefferson history. The 15 young men shared the duties. Some removed and folded the daily flag that was already up while the others shared the responsibility to raise the historic flag. Their execution of the task was remarkable. They prepared for this event through multiple meetings and training. The boys were taught proper flag care and appreciation, like the correct way to raise a flag, how to care for and fold a flag, and their final training is how to retire an American Flag.

The public was invited to watch as these young men hoisted this beautiful flag into place at Village Hall. You certainly could tell they knew what they were doing!
Congratulations to the scouts! Job well done!
REPAIRING ARLINGTON AVE
Staying on top of it!
In September of 2021, the Village determined the changes that the Department of Transportation (DOT) made to the intersection of West Broadway and Arlington Ave would inhibit vehicles from traversing the intersection without bottoming out and causing damage to their vehicles. Since that determination, Village officials have been working with DOT and Senator Palumbo’s office to come up with a solution to the problem including DOT engineers redesigning the entire intersection, at their expense, in order to solve the issue.

The Village is working with the DOT on a timeline of completion. Please rest assured that Mayor Garant, Deputy Mayor Snaden, Department of Public Works lead Steve Gallagher, and Village Administrator Joe Palumbo have their eye on the prize. Their continued communication and actions are keeping this project moving.

Thank you for protecting our infrastructure!
SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
Protecting our streets and parks is a top priority. Our 'See Something - Say Something' campaign is designed to make you a part of the solution. Signs are being posted throughout Main Street, in both uptown and downtown areas. The phone number of the supervising Code Officer is prominently displayed on each sign. We encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or other hazards. If you see something unusual or witness any concerning behavior, call (631) 774-0066. The Code Enforcement Bureau will secure the scene immediately, investigate the situation and work with SCPD. Our Code officers have a well-established relationship with SCPD. Many of them are retired, active or auxiliary officers. We also have security cameras on our streets. SCPD’s real-time crime center is tied into our camera system and can monitor them when necessary. All crimes are reported to Suffolk County Police. It will take all of us to be proactive and diligent to continue with the good work that has already been established.
