October 15, 2021,

Good Afternoon,
This week was short yet eventful! We had a fabulous Fall Literacy Fest. Thank you to our PTO, Book Ambassador Mrs. McHugh, and YGS team for their efforts. After 20 months, this first big in person event meant a great deal. Thank you for joining us.

This week we practiced severe weather drill. To date we've practiced 2 fire drills, 1 severe weather, and 1 bus evacuation drill. Students modeled safety and listening during our important drills!

As we look ahead, your child's teacher will reach out to begin to welcome volunteers to help us with small groups. All visitors will follow our safety protocols. We hope to see you!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lech, Principal

School Updates:

Halloween: Like last year, students will COME to school in costumes (if you choose). We also have extra costumes for any child who desires. Classroom parties will take place in the morning. We invite you to join our school parade (around the block near Parkview School) at 1030 a.m. Students take off costumes in the afternoon. PM Kinder/EC PM will have their party/parade around the school in the afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

WIN Groups: We re-launched WIN time (What I Need) groups. Every day students will engage in small groups focused on reading or math from 11:00-11:30 a.m. At YGS we have 13 WIN groups that are specific to student needs and interests.

What are Bright Bucks? At YGS, we practice four character cornerstones: Be safe, be kind, be ready, be here & ready. When students are 'caught' modeling these behaviors, they can earn a bright buck. Students can cash these in monthly at our school store and/or earn a chance at our weekly prize raffle.

Math Drops in the Bucket: Every child has a Drops in the Bucket math book that spirals standards. We will work on this at school. Also, please practice Drops in the Bucket at home. Below are each grade's plan. As a school, our goal is to complete 3-5 pages per week along with our core math instruction. This will make a huge difference in building your child's math foundational skills.

Kindergarten:
Students have 3 pages highlighted to complete at home.
Thursdays return book to school.

First Grade
Students complete 2-3 pages per week at home.
Return on Friday

Second Grade
Books come home each Monday; four pages will have a star. They are to answer all of the odd problems. They return books on Friday.

Third Grade
2 odd pages (minimum) per week will be assigned for home. Students can do more for extra credit!
