adventfestFestival of Lessons and Music This Sunday

Join us for one of our beloved traditions at Fourth Church, the Festival of Advent Lessons and Music, this Sunday, December 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Pastors and members of Fourth Church will read the scripture lessons of Advent, and Fourth Church's Children's, Youth, Chancel, and Morning Choirs will perform anthems of the season. Together we'll sing Advent hymns and anticipate the birth of Jesus Christ.

A reception hosted by Women@Fourth Connect and featuring homemade cookies and hot cocoa will follow the service.

"The Music and Meaning of Advent"

Far more than counting down the shopping days until Christmas, Advent invites us to celebrate the coming of Christmas, especially with music. Join us Wednesday evening, December 11 for "The Music and Meaning of Advent," a special intergenerational program hosted by the Academy for Faith and Life together with Children and Family Ministry.

The evening will start with a festive reception and fellowship in Allison Hall and Library of the Gratz Center. Children will enjoy a meal and their own program with Minister for Children and Families Matt Helms in the Bumpus Room. A program for adults will start at 6:00 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel. Jeanne Bishop, Associate Pastor Adam Fronczek, and Organist and Director of Music John Sherer will lead a musical fanfare of great holiday hymns, sharing history, theology, and their personal stories. Towards the end of the evening, adults and children will raise voices together in a merry sing-along.

Nursery care will be available for children two and under.

During our festive evening of music we also want to remember those in need this season. We encourage everyone attending "The Music and Meaning of Advent" to bring a food or clothing item(s) for donation to the Consumer Choice Food Pantry or the Share Shop of the Chicago Lights Elam Davies Social Service Center. The Social Service Center is looking, in particular, for holiday and ready-to-eat food items as well as winter clothing items, including winter coats, for our guests experiencing homelessness.

RSVPs are appreciated--to help facilitate planning for childcare and food and beverages--and can be done online or with Ryan Loeckel.

Time and place

   Wednesday, December 11

5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Bumpus Room and Buchanan Chapel

One More Week for Christmas Flowers

There's still time to help decorate the Sanctuary and Gratz Center with flowers and garlands while at the same time memorializing or honoring loved ones this holiday season.

Names of those remembered through the Christmas flowers donation will be printed in the Christmas worship bulletin. Contributions can be made online, by completing the Christmas flowers form also available online  or in the literature racks, or by contacting Wydetta Carter.

Forms must be received by next Friday, December 13 for names to appear in the bulletin.

Men's Breakfast with Carl Grapentine

All men are invited to a Men's Breakfast next Saturday, December 14 at 8:00 a.m. in the Bumpus Room. In addition to sharing breakfast and fellowship, men will be joined by special guest Carl Grapentine for a presentation that celebrates the Christmas season through an exploration of lesser-known Christmas-themed music.

Carl Grapentine is the co-host of the morning program at 98.7 WFMT and can be found offering a pre-performance lecture at the Symphony Center and Lyric Opera, conducting a myriad of musical performances, and announcing for football games at Michigan Stadium.

While not required, RSVPs to Edwin Estevez are kindly requested. A donation will be accepted at the door.

Decorating Gift Bags for Our Guests

It's not too late to help brighten the Christmas of a Sunday Night Supper guest by taking part in the "Christmas Gift Bag" project.

Simply pick up a bag during Coffee Hour this Sunday or at the reception desk and then decorate it and fill it with the items listed on an attached sheet (travel-size toiletries and a few other small items). Decorated and filled bags are being accepted at the reception desk through Sunday, December 15.

The bags will then be distributed to the guests of EDSSC programs throughout the Christmas holiday.
