Dear Northern Oaks Families,
On Friday you should have received your child’s report card. The report card displayed the overall grade average and gave a breakdown of the reporting categories of each section. The report card can share helpful data but should not be a measure of your child’s success at Northern Oaks. Please be sure to participate in conferences for a full discussion regarding your child’s strengths and areas for growth. The teachers are looking forward to the time we will spend together in conference with you next week talking about each of your scholars.
There is so much value in the face-to-face conversations that will be had, as we share information from both the school front and the home front in an effort to partner together towards the same goal: educating towards virtue. Our hope is that you will better understand, when your child is at school, how they approach and engage the lessons, how they participate and ask questions, what makes them curious, how do they deal with struggle and how they interact with their peers. Conversely, the teachers want to hear from you how each student views school, the workload, their friends, as well as any insight into what makes them tick or motivates them.
If you are unable to make one of the times next week, please reach out to the teacher before school resumes on October 25th, to arrange a time to touch base. The school will be closed Thursday & Friday, October 21 & 22 to allow the teachers to spend leisure time with their families.
Character Dress-Up Day is October 29th. Please remember that the character you choose MUST be from one of the Classics-to-Keep from the K-6 list, a grade level read-aloud, Greek or Roman Mythology, or a historical character from our curriculum. Students are to fill out a costume proposal and turn it into the teacher by Wednesday, October 27th. If your costume will be at all see-through, you should wear your uniform underneath. If you choose not to participate, this is also the last Friday of the month and so you can wear a spirit shirt. Costumes (or any item connected to it) cannot be a distraction from learning or they will be confiscated for the remainder of the day. Full face paint is prohibited (exceptions could include nose and whiskers for an animal, fake facial stubble or freckles). No frightening portrayals (ex: One of the Pritchard boys from Where the Red Fern Grows with an ax in his stomach.) Each student received a costume proposal form to fill out and return to the teacher so that each student knows that their costume idea meets the criteria. This is meant to be a fun day of celebration and coincides with a read-a-thon by teachers, administration, and students.
Field Day Shirts: please note all students are required to wear their Field Day City/State shirts or an intramural house shirt on GHNO Field day, which is quickly approaching in mid-November! See the box below for information on how to purchase your students.
We look forward to enjoying time together at the Family Fall Festival on October 30th and Movie Night in the courtyard on November 5th!
Warmly,
