On November 30th Cary Library welcomed Dr. Samuel Ting to the Science Café. Dr. Ting is a Professor of Physics at MIT. In 1976, he and Dr. Burton Richter received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of the J/ψ meson particle.

Dr. Ting discussed his recent work on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) for the International Space Station; how he conceived the idea and the advancements required to launch a 7-ton object. Dr. Ting also spoke about his career path, emphasizing the importance of curiosity and creativity for success in science.

"This spring, I saw the words “Proud to be American” and “Celebrating Asian American Pacific” on a poster in Cary Library. It inspired me to create artwork of one of the most influential Asian Americans, Samuel C. C. Ting. Dr. Ting has been my idol since childhood. I admire him for winning the prestigious Nobel Prize for discovering the J particle and speaking Chinese at the Nobel podium. I was moved by how brave he was in questioning authority and not giving up when encountering difficulties."

The Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL) Youth STEM team designed a website to collect questions for Dr. Ting. The three most popular questions: (1) What are the implications of the search for antimatter and dark matter for the development of science, interstellar travel and the future of human society? (2) What do you think of humans colonizing Mars? (3) When faced with problems that cannot be solved scientifically, how do you make choices, judgments, and final decisions?

The Cary Library Foundation is proud to fund the Science Café speakers series.

Our success is thanks to the support of our generous donors and the Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL).

Entering the new year, I am reflecting on all of the reasons why I appreciate Cary Library. From exploring new books to conducting digital research to attending programs and book clubs to crafting to cooking, Cary Library offers something for everyone. With flexibility, inclusiveness, and creativity, Cary Library supports our community in so many ways. Thank you for your donations to the Foundation, enabling Cary Library to reach beyond what it can achieve with municipal funding alone. Cheers to the year ahead!
