Enhancing the lives of women and youth in our community and the world.

Today's Meeting Review!

President Paula opened our meeting today on another beautiful day in paradise. Our summer has been an amazing one and we are all grateful for it. President Paula also requested that members bring an item of importance to them for our version of Show and Tell for next week's meeting.

Our Invocation this morning was provided by our Lydia and it was reminiscent on where we were this time last year, emotionally and physically. Due to a fire we never thought would reach us, we were evacuated and brave first responders were working to keep our community and the beauty of our area safe. Throughout life we have times of fear, sadness, and uncertainty. It's important that even through these times we find ways to stamp out those feelings and anxiety, even for a brief period of time. Breathe, be with friends, take a walk. Take a break from your worries to center yourself. And if you know of someone going through a troublesome time, reach out.

Guest: Ms. Carol Gerard was our guest today but shortly she'll me a SITster!

Sunshine this morning goes out to the family and friends of Luis Gomez. His passing leaves many behind who hold him close to their hearts. And continued prayers and good thoughts to our Hellen and her hubby. Be strong and know that we are here for whatever you need.

Our Speaker This Week : Carrie Champness, Genealogy Researcher and Registrar of DAR

We loved today's guest! Carrie Champness has a passion for investigation. Carrie is the Registrar (Genealogist) for the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lake Tahoe Chapter. She's a resident of Gardnerville, NV and a California registered nurse with her own business, Champs Solutions. She teaches OSHA (safety) to medical societies and offices in California. Her hobbies include genealogy and travel.

To say that researching and being a detective into the generations of people is a passion of Carrie's is an understatement. Her quest began early with merely asking her grandmother a question or two and from that point forward she has learned the resources out there, what to do and not to do when researching, and ways to use both the internet and boots on the ground investigations. And as she said, "Everyone has a story."

She shared key points for everyone beginning their research.

  • Utilize Family History Libraries
  • If there are family reunions, attend them. Living relatives have many stories to be a basis of a search.
  • Carefully log/record your resources. Lineage has to be proved through legitimate documents of record.
  • Question all information you find. The spelling of names is just one instance where things are altered from one generation to another.
  • Verify and cross check information you discover.
  • Question "Family Legends".
  • Try multiple spellings.
  • Dig deeper.

She shared how her search started and the things she did right and not so right! She also compiled a Genealogy Resource page for all here!  These are resources you can gain access to online and in person! Much of this assistance is free. The only cost to you is your desire to learn.

It was so fun to listen to the chit chat following our meeting as the ladies were still talking about things after our meeting concluded. Many of YOU may have a patriot of the American Revolution and you don't know it yet. I promise it's fun to learn if you do. And a few fun facts: a patriot didn't have to be someone carrying a rifle, it could have been an individual supporting the effort in any way that was recorded such as paying a tax or an oath of loyalty. And it could have been an individual in another country to sought passage to this land (wasn't America yet!) to fight for the cause.

So much to learn and you can begin exploration by learning about our Lake Tahoe Chapter of DAR. Several Soroptimist are members of this amazing community serving women as well.

Thank you Carrie!

P.S.

DAR and many other partners are diligently working to revitalize our historic Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery and

are hosting tours and information at the cemetery on Sept. 22, 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Let's get there Tahoe!

Previous Speaker Follow-up: From our friend, Amanda Milici of Fire Adapted Communities, here's the August news. Important information for any community.

SEPTEMTER is Suicide Prevention Month:

Here's an added item for your knowledge! Suicide claims the lives of more than 47,000 Americans per year. It's a serious threat for the young and our older adults. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and there is much to learn. One important item to SHARE around the nation is that one can easily reach The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988. We have two great sources of information. NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness has valuable information here. And click here for added resources from Barton Health.

Support for our Mt. Tallac Students! The pandemic knocked our schedule off a bit but we are putting the final touches on the www.artsaleformttallac.org website where we will be launching an online art sale thanks to the talent of Mr. Keith Williams. Our website is being built with the final touches and people can begin to bid on Sept. 1, so please SHARE this information. People can also simply donate to our efforts at the school!
