This Sunday we remember the baptism of our Lord, one of the texts traditionally read after Epiphany, as we continue to focus on the revelation of the divinity of Jesus. As we hear again the voice of the Lord saying at Jesus’ baptism “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased,” we also recall our own baptism, in which God has claimed and named us as God’s own. In grateful thanksgiving we together renew our commitment to live out our call as beloved children of God.

We have a perfect lunch planned for a wintry Sunday: chili!

Plan to dine with us this Sunday, January 13, when $15 will get you unlimited tastings of chili and cornbread as well as provide fundraising support for the 2019 Fourth Church Youth mission trips.

Chili tickets will be available at the door to Borwell Dining Room between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. as will be ballots for voting for this year’s favorite.

If you would like to enter your own chili into the running for the 2019 Golden Ladle for Best Fourth Church Chili, we would also welcome more entries! To enter your chili in the cook-off, please sign up here and then bring a 6-quart pot of chili to Borwell Dining Room by 10:30 a.m.

The three 2019 summer youth trips supported by this Sunday’s chili cook-off will take our youth to Detroit, New Jersey, and the Presbyterian Youth Triennium.

Youth who are interested in joining us for one or more of these trips are reminded that this Tuesday, January 15 is the deadline to sign up to travel with us!

This Tuesday, January 15 is also the application deadline for the two 2019 trips planned by our World Mission and Social Justice Committee!

Visit Havana, Cuba—and our friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Havana—from May 6 to May 13 with Nanette Sawyer and Gretchen Wahl.

Travel to Guatemala—and work with Common Hope alongside members of the local community—from August 4 to August 11 with Tom and Sue Schemper.

If you would like to travel with Fourth Church in 2019 but would prefer to stay closer to home, the Racial Equity Council invites you to join them for a trip to Alabama and Mississippi this October 26–November 2 that focuses on the civil rights movement.

Two adult education opportunities are on our calendar for this Sunday, January 13.

At 11:00 a.m. in Room 5E, Jeff Doane will lead the first class in a three-session Academy for Faith and Life course: “Faith in the Midst of Turmoil: Exploring ‘The Theological Declaration of Barmen.’” This confession of faith emerged from a meeting of the Lutheran, Reformed, and United churches as a response to the Nazi national church movement in 1934.

At 12:15 p.m. in Room 4G, Beth Hessel will be with us to talk about the Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS), of which she is executive director. Organized in 1852, the PHS is the oldest denominational archives in the United States.

This Sunday during our weekly Jazz at Four Communion service, we will begin an eight-week sermon series: “Who Is Jesus?”

“Jesus the Beloved” will be our topic this week, followed by “Jesus the Prophet” next week (January 20).

Between now and Ash Wednesday we will also reflect on

“Jesus the Teacher” (January 27)
“Jesus the Outsider” (February 3)
“Jesus the Preacher” (February 10)
“Jesus the Healer” (February 17)
“Jesus the Just” (February 24)
“Jesus the Resurrected” (March 3)

Come join us on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel as we retell stories from scripture of people who experience God and are changed and as we together discover the person and power of Jesus Christ.

Tickets are now available for the 2019 Gala of Hope, the annual benefit in support of Chicago Lights—the community outreach arm of Fourth Church—and the Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. at the Radisson Blu Aqua (221 N. Columbus).

The festive evening includes a three-course seated dinner, dancing to live music provided by the Ken Arlen Evolution Orchestra, a mystery wine sale, and silent and live auctions featuring unique experiences, getaways, entertainment, and more.
