ARLINGTON AIRPORT

KAWO Quarterly Update

September 1, 2022

Message from the Arlington Airport Director

First of all, I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying the nice flying weather!

I want to touch on a subject that comes up again and again at our wonderful airport - improper traffic pattern entry and exit techniques.

Please think back to when you were working on your private pilot certificate and what your instructor and textbooks told you. What did they say? "Whenever possible, land into the wind."

Here at KAWO, we’re blessed to have two fine runways. If the wind is out of the northwest, use 29! Unless you’re doing crosswind practice or in a large fast-moving aircraft that needs the length, use the runway most aligned with the wind. I know that sounds basic, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the pattern for 34 full when the wind is clearly out of the northwest at 10kts or more. When the pilot who is trying to use the proper runway comes to the intersection we have a potentially dangerous situation.

Fly friendly! Don’t call a five-mile straight in the final when the pattern is full. Enter the pattern properly on the 45 to the downwind leg. Consider giving way to larger, faster aircraft. Avoid causing other pilots to go around by spacing yourself out in the pattern.

To be honest, it hurts when we hear, "I’m never going to fly into Arlington. They’re crazy up there!" or "I won’t take my students to Arlington because there are too many cowboys up there." In all fairness, many of the violators are not from here, but we do have our share of homegrown sloppy pilots.

We have had wonderful presenters here on several occasions, reviewing airspace and proper pattern technique with our tenants, but we continue to see bad behavior. Please don’t be one of those pilots. Please follow this link, Proper Pattern Techniques, for a great article on this subject, written by retired F-18 pilot, Colonel Tom Rogers, CFI-AI-MEI,NAFI, Master Instructor, who recently spoke at our airport.

Blue Skies,

Dave Ryan

Welcome Taylor Mozingo

The KAWO staff recently welcomed Taylor Mozingo to its ranks. From a solid group of applicants, Taylor joins the team as the Airport Management Intern.

Taylor is a recent graduate of Central Washington University with a Bachelor’s in Aviation Management. He’s currently working on his pilot’s license and is expected to wrap it up by the end of this summer.

Taylor married his wife Erika last September, and they’re the proud parents of three cats: Tiffany, George, and Luna. Taylor is passionate about aviation. He also enjoys cycling, crabbing in the Sound with his dad and brother, and is an avid video gamer as well.

Taylor has hit the ground running and is already heading up some projects here at AWO. Please stop by and meet Taylor or wave him down on his field checks to welcome him to the Arlington Airport community.

Community Airport Day/Arlington SkyFest

On August 20th, the Arlington Fly-In hosted a sold-out show with a breathtaking airshow at sunset and an amazing choreographed drone show under the stars. On August 21st, the airport hosted an entire day of family fun at Community Airport Day. The airport office parking lot and grass field were filled with vendors, food trucks, North County Fire, Arlington Police Department, a bouncy house, and arts and crafts.

The ramp was bustling with attendees viewing aircraft static displays that included historic aircraft from the Commemorative Air Force, and the Young Eagles organization, who provided nearly 200 flights to kids ages 8-17. We would like to thank all of the volunteers, vendors, pilots, and sponsors who made these events possible, and we cannot wait to start planning for next year!

16/34 Mill and Overlay Project 2022

The Arlington Airport will be conducting a full length mill and overlay of runway 16/34. The mostly FAA funded project will begin on September 5th and take essentially the whole month to complete.

It should be noted that there will be a couple of full airport closures during this time in order to facilitate the project. Airport staff will work diligently to give advance notice of these closures and to minimize the impact on our tenants and users as much as possible.

Closure Schedule:

  • 9-6-2022 at 8:00 a.m. Runway 16/34 will be closed until 9-26-2022 at 6:00 p.m. when it will reopen.
  • Full airport closures will be announced in advance as we make progress on the project.

Please make sure you check your NOTAMs and watch for access gate, email and other forms of contact for additional details as they become available. As always, safety is our primary purpose as we work to complete this vital project for the betterment and long-term viability of the airport.

Feel free to contact the airport office with any questions or concerns you might have.

Hangar Clean Out Week, September 20th - 25th

Sponsored by the Arlington Municipal Airport for all Hangar Tenants, we will have two dumpsters that will allow tenants to remove any unwanted trash in their hangars. These dumpster are for hangar trash only. Please do not bring trash from home. For more information call the airport office at 360-403-3470.

Point to Point Air has Expanded!

By Jeanne Howe, Point to Point Air

In April, Point to Point Air moved into a larger hangar here at Arlington Airport. We are in the building just south of Airlift NW. Many pilots, staff, and friends pitched in to make it all happen - it took a village and has been a long process to get things in order. With still more to get organized, we squeeze it in around all the summertime flights that have begun. Our space includes a pilot lounge/conference room for training, offices, a kitchen area, and best of all, space to hangar our aircraft.

We look forward to sunshine and many flights around the PNW. Stop by to check us out at 17605 50th Drive NE., Hangar C, where there is always candy in the candy jar.

We are in negotiations with Horizon Air for our 135 pilots to flow into their training program once they have the required flight hours. We have already moved many aviators through that pipeline and hope to have many more on this track.

Cascade Aviation from Skagit Regional Airport is in the works to join us! They will have satellite operations here as well, offering flight training lessons in their own aircraft. A Grumman Lynx and a Cessna 172 are slated to be used.

Now for the latest news — welcome Right Rudder, Inc., our new aircraft maintenance and repair shop. We are now open and doing work on your planes. We have 2 IAs and 2 A&Ps to get you in and out so that you don’t lose any of the prime flying season. Located next door to Point to Point Air, Right Rudder is in Hangar D. They are so new that they don’t even have a phone yet. So, if you are looking for their service, feel free to contact Laith Barnhill on his cell, 907-401-1745, or call P2P at 425-530-5518. I will get them in touch with you!

We have had a flurry of activity here lately, including Dickies clothing line doing their Fall photo shoot here and hosting a luncheon with tours for GIFT girls (Girls in Flight Training) while they were in Arlington for a week.

For us, this has been a busy spring, and we look forward to an even busier summer. Fly safely, and see you out there!
