Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
October 2021

Pandemia Continued
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association are collaborating to collect and share all publicly available data from states on child COVID-19 cases. The definition of “child” case is based on varying age ranges reported across states (see report Appendix for details and links to all data sources).
As of October 7, over 6.0 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic. The number of new child COVID cases remains exceptionally high. Over 148,000 cases were added the past week, with over 750,000 child cases added over the past 4 weeks. Children, under age 18, make up 22.2% of the US population.
In California, we have just under 9 M kids 0-18 and as of October 7, 2021, 663,114 have been affected by COVID infection. Most do well but some are hospitalized with acute infection or MIS-C disease. A review of Pfizer’s data on the vaccine for kids 5-11 is ongoing this month.
Peter Szilagyi et al surveyed a diverse group of 1400 parents’ feelings about the COVID vaccine for children.[1] At this early stage, there is some hesitancy but most parents looked forward to information from health care professionals and local health departments for guidance. A major finding was that the most trusted source of information is from the child’s doctor or health care provider.
Our kids are back to school but still reeling from the effects. Leeb [2] et al noted sharp increases in emergency room visits due to mental health crises in children since March of 2020. California has a new bill signed into law that creates a mental health protocol for schools. Assembly Bill 309, sponsored by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Woodland Hills) and Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach), The new protocol will help schools identify students who might need help and connect them with counseling or other services.
On the upside, Alameda County seems to be moving from substantial to moderate levels of disease and has published guidance and a plan for adjusting health orders in the coming weeks and months.
On another note, we lost a dear member of our medical staff recently. Dr. Bryant Toth passed recently and will be remembered for decades of service to patients with craniofacial anomalies as a plastic surgeon and member of the craniofacial team. Thank you to Dr. Jason Pomerantz for stepping up to direct the Oakland-based program. We as colleagues appreciate all who have stepped up to continue his legacy.
Respectfully,
Kelley

Updated UCSF Event Policy | |
Updated September 30, 2021
Guidance on Hosting Meetings and Events
UCSF adheres to the San Francisco Department of Public Health COVID-19 health requirements, and, in some instances, our requirements are more stringent given our unique role as an academic, medical, and research enterprise. Our top priority is to ensure the safety of the UCSF community and our patients. Any event plan is conditional on current health orders.
Effective October 1, 2021, UCSF lifts its temporary ban on meetings and events. Here are the highlights:
- Meetings and events with 50 or less in attendance are approved and managed by local departments.
-
Meetings and events 50 or more in attendance will require Recovery Operations Center (ROC) approval. The ROC meeting and request form is here.
- Indoor meetings and events are limited to 50 percent of the capacity of the room. Outdoor events do not have space capacity limitations.
It is expected that departments and department event planners will ensure that their meetings and events follow all policies and guidelines as outlined below. This applies to all campus indoor and outdoor meetings at UCSF campus facilities and UCSF-sponsored off-site events.

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

In our recent discussion with visiting UCSF Presidential Chair award recipient, Dr. Camara Jones we were encouraged to ensure that our unified goal of being an anti-racist institution was reflected in more than just our strategies, goals, and tactics, but even in our council’s name. To that end, we are delighted to announce our official council name change to BCH Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism Council (BCH DEI/AR).
