Together We Can Change Hunger & Homelessness

As Thanksgiving approaches, many people in America reflect on the reasons for which they’re thankful.

The holiday is also an appropriate time to show one’s appreciation by donating time, attention and

resources to those less fortunate.

Join Catholic Charities in Honoring

National Hunger & Homeless Awareness Week

Through November 23, 2024

Catholic Charities combats hunger through our Food Assistance Programs, providing low-income families with monthly food distributions, and emergency food packages to households that find themselves in crisis. On average, over 700 food packages, totaling over 10,000 pounds of food, are distributed each month throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Each year, Catholic Charities Shelter Services combats homelessness by providing a temporary home to men, women, and children through our three shelters — our adult shelter, Casa San Francisco and our new shelter, Bethany House, in Maryland (watch for more info to come) and our residential maternity program, Bayard House. All programs provide accommodations and three daily meals as well as case management support to help residents obtain income, find affordable housing options, and secure permanent housing. Bayard House residents also receive guidance in prenatal, postnatal, and infant care as well as parenting education.

Catholic Charities Basic Needs Program helps to reestablish permanent residences for persons who

have experienced a recent period of homelessness, providing them with financial assistance and case

management expertise to avoid future problems. The Homeless Prevention Service works with clients

who are at risk of losing housing because of a financial disruption. Both are available to clients

throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“Every person deserves to live without worrying whether they will have food

on their plate or a roof over their head. Far too many people are forced to make

hard choices between paying for food, housing and other critical expenses.”

— Ruth Anne White, Executive Director, Catholic Charities

Many Thanks to St. Bernadette Parish for Donation Drive!

St. Bernadette Parish in Harrington, DE hosted a donation drive for Catholic Charities' Basic Needs program. The community supported their efforts by helping them fill a box truck with household items, furniture, appliances, clothing, and many other items that will be used to support local programs and provide services for individuals facing barriers to employment and self-sufficiency.

It was a great experience all around. Our generous donators were happy to pass along their unwanted items for the benefit of others.

With rising costs in the current economy, many individuals and families are at risk of eviction, foreclosure, or utility disconnections. Catholic Charities’ Basic Needs Program was created to provide a short-term safety net for families who are experiencing a financial crisis, which could be related to a medical emergency, mismanagement of debt, sudden underemployment or unemployment, or other causes. This program provides vital support and hope while also offering pathways toward financial stability and support for those most in need.

The Citizens Helping Citizens (CHC) initiative is grounded in the belief that when communities are strong, everyone benefits. Focused on financial empowerment and workforce development, CHC aims to provide the tools and support to drive economic vitality of our streets, neighborhoods, and towns, with an understanding that investing in the communities where we live and work enriches us all.
