August 2024 Newsletter

As we soak up the last rays of sunshine and fall into the new school year, we're grateful for the warmth and energy the MSP community continuously shares with Survivors, especially during these past few months.

Thanks to your unwavering support, we've been able to provide essential services to survivors and people who've experienced domestic violence. Whether you attended an event, spread the word, or stood by our side, your commitment has made all the difference.

Here's to ending the summer on a high note and stepping into new beginnings together!

Partnering with AmerigroupDC:

A Summer Drive for School Supplies

Just this past month, we had the pleasure of partnering with AmerigroupDC in a heartwarming initiative. The team at their DC office came together to purchase and prepare backpacks with school supplies for the families in our emergency shelters.

Thanks to them, every child in our shelter has brand new school supplies for their school year. Their generosity doesn't stop there—AmerigroupDC gave $30,000 in funding to support education and employment requests through our Fresh Start Fund.

Spotlight on The Fresh Start Fund

The Fresh Start Fund is more than just financial aid—it’s a lifeline for the clients in our housing programs. This fund offers crucial support by covering emergency expenses that could threaten a client's safety and stability. It also supports survivors by covering educational and employment training costs and by providing the necessary resources to build self-sufficiency and reclaim their independence. Your support is instrumental in this empowering process.

Take Emily*, for example. She was an experienced EMT, but her future seemed uncertain when recertification costs threatened her job.

Without it, she faced the harsh reality of taking lower-paying work. Thankfully, MSP’s Fresh Start Fund stepped in, covering her recertification. With her training completed and a revamped resume, she didn’t just find a job—she secured one created specifically for her.

Emily’s story highlights the transformative power of the Fresh Start Fund. She’s now thriving in a woman-led company, using her skills to support EMT work. This success wouldn’t have been possible without the financial relief provided by the fund.

Financial abuse is a significant barrier for many of the survivors we serve, often trapping them in cycles of dependence and danger.

Thanks to AmerigroupDC’s corporate sponsorship, we’ve expanded the reach of the Fresh Start Fund, ensuring that more survivors and their families receive the support they need to build secure and independent lives. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, is a part of this expansion, and we are proud to have you on board.

Back-to-School Dating and Healthy Relationships

As the new school year begins, it's important to talk about healthy relationships, especially for young people. Empowering our youth with this knowledge is key to preventing dating violence before it starts.

ICYMI–be sure to check out our Let’s Talk Healthy Teen Relationships post from our Safe Summer Series on social media! We dive into what makes a relationship truly healthy, focusing on the essential traits that foster mutual respect and emotional well-being.

At MSP, we understand that early education is vital in shaping positive relationship habits. That’s why we’re excited to collaborate with the One Love organization, a leader in empowering young people with the tools and resources to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships. In the coming weeks, our staff will meet with their experts to explore strategies to help us make an even more significant impact in our communities.

By empowering the next generation, we can help break the cycle of abuse and foster a safer, healthier environment for all.

Summer Safety with Defend Yourself

In August, our advocates and administrative staff united for self-defense classes with Defend Yourself. This enriching experience offered practical skills and a renewed sense of confidence and agency. The training provided valuable tools to enhance safety and foster resilience, even beyond just physical defensive maneuvers, honoring everyone's journey towards greater self-assurance and security.
