Oakholm Brewing Company
80 Lake Road, Brookfield, MA
413-272-9620
Meet us at Oakholm's Taproom for May Networking!
The taproom at Oakholm Brewing Company is a beautiful mortise and tenon timber framed hay barn constructed in the early 1900s. This historic barn has been completely renovated and a new timber framed addition has been added to maintain the classic look and create a large production area for the brewery. The team at Oakholm is excited to share their delicious beer, malted seltzers and sours with you, and show you the beauty of their stunning property!
Learn more about Oakholm Brewing Co. below and join your fellow Chamber Members for networking, cold drinks and FUN on May 15th!
ABOUT OUR HOSTS
After purchasing Oakholm Farm in February 2018, Chris “Babe” Predella asked his long-time employee Andrew Woodward for advice on utilizing an old barn as a tap room for Christmas Tree Sales in the winter. Andrew had been home brewing for over 7 years and his response was “you should put a brewery here.”
They both soon started making plans on renovating the hay barn to create a beautiful brewery. They knew they needed one more person to create a great partnership, and that person was Rick Predella, Babe’s Father. Rick’s background in engineering and operations management was the perfect addition to the partnership. After a two year journey, we were able to open in May 2020 to the public for can sales during the height of the pandemic. Since then, the taproom has been opened for indoor and outdoor seating with firepits and outside draft pours on warmer days.
Oakholm Brewing Company is situated on Oakholm Farm Estate’s land whose mission is to be a place of love, respect, fun, celebration, peace, & relaxation, nourishment for the soul, and a place where families come together. A place where people enter as strangers and leave as friends.

UNITED WAY CELEBRATES 85TH ANNIVERSARY
|
|
PHOTO: Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, President Award Recipient Bill Keefe, Executive Director Mary O’Coin, Representative Joe McKenna and Former UW Webster-Dudley Executive Director Janet Scheffler
WEBSTER: On March 29th the United Way of South Central Massachusetts (UWSCM) celebrated its 85th Anniversary with a Campaign Awards and Jazz Dinner held at Samuel Slater’s Restaurant and Banquet Hall. The night included discussion of the exciting memories from the many years United Way has been operating in the towns of Southbridge, Sturbridge, Charlton, Webster and Dudley. What was once two separate United Ways that merged in 2020, many organizations and residents in the five towns have benefited from services they have been able to fund Music was provided by the Jerry Seeco Jazz Trio, and guests were able to participate in a Mystery Raffle and silent auction.
UWSCM Board President, Kris Marier started the night off with an introduction of past executive directors from both United Ways, past board presidents, board members and special guests MA State Representative Joseph McKenna and MA State Senator Ryan Fattman. He also recognized the main sponsors INCOM, Inc. and SAVERS BANK along with all of the lead sponsors.
The program included 2022 Campaign Chairwoman Denise Gorski who remarked “I am delighted to announce that we have reached our $584,000 goal and actually exceeded it by 4%. Our initial worries about the success of the campaign were for not. It was all possible with the help of the many workplace campaigns at local businesses, foundations and individual donors.” Ms. Gorski stated that the goal was the highest ever set by the United Way because we had granted the highest amount ever to local programs that provided for the health, education and financial needs of many in the communities that we serve.
Worcester County Sheriff, Lew Evangelidis was the Guest Speaker for the evening. He recounted his first experience with the Community Justice Support Center in Webster when he started as Sheriff and how far it has come serving an increasing number of district courts with recovery and rehabilitation assistance. The work that is being done provides those incarcerated and on probation with access to services and opportunities to turn their lives around for the better. Sheriff Evangelidis stated “To give a hand up, out of an endless cycle of public assistance and criminal behavior.” That his mission as sheriff is similar to United Way’s logo of a hand raising someone up and not just giving a handout. “That we have a shared purpose of helping those in need and providing a way for them to live in dignity, with purpose and opportunities.”
State Representative Joseph McKenna and State Senator Ryan Fattman presented on behalf of the Massachusetts House of Representatives a Congratulations Citation to the United Way of South Central MA in recognition of “The celebration of an incredible 85 years servicing the people across Southern Worcester County”.
The evening concluded with remarks from UWSCM Executive Director, Mary O’Coin who stated “That we have grown over the years from a Community Chest in 1937 to today’s United Way. We are still very home grown. Concentrating on how we can help the residents in the five towns that we serve. Charlton, Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge and Webster are wonderful communities with very generous people. It was now time honor a few of them.” She presented awards to local businesses who performed at high levels of giving through their employee and corporate gifts.

The following companies and organizations received GOOD NEIGHBOR Awards for combined gifts of over $10,000 or more: bankHometown, UMASS Memorial Health – Harrington, and Webster First Federal Credit Union. SILVER Award was present to SAVERS BANK for having 85-99% of their employees participate in their campaign. DIAMOND Awards were presented to the following businesses and foundations for giving of over $30,000; Cornerstone Bank, Dexter-Russell, Inc., Fundación MAPFRE, Incom, Inc. and KARL STORZ Endovision. Special “Excellence in Giving” awards for increasing workplace campaigns were presented to SAVERS BANK for a 26% increase and KARL STORZ Endoscopy America for increasing their campaign by 76%. A BEACON Award was presented to CORNERSTONE BANK for their contribution of almost $80,000 to this year’s campaign and for being an inspiration to other businesses to give generously. An individual UNSUNG HERO award was presented to UWSCM board member Shana Bandelean for outstanding support throughout the year. A first time FOUNDATION AWARD was presented to Gerald and Marilyn Fels for their outstanding support and philanthropy in Webster and Dudley. The last award of the night was presented to past UWSCM board president William Keefe. He received the PRESIDENT’S AWARD for his lifelong commitment to service as a former member of the military, as a police officer and Webster Police Chief, and for his many years as a member of the United Way of Webster & Dudley board, his three years as UWWD board president and for being instrumental in the merger of the two United Ways and becoming the first board president of the United Way of South Central Massachusetts.
The evening concluded with raffle prizes, music and the continued hope for another 85 years of service by the United Way.
The United Way of South Central Massachusetts serves the communities of Charlton, Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge and Charlton and is located at 176 Main St., Suite 400, Southbridge, MA 01550. NBSB Thanks the Community for their generosity during “Love Lives Here Collection Drive” to benefit The Be Like Brit Foundation
|
|
North Brookfield, MA – North Brookfield Savings Bank is committed to excellence and the support of their local communities, which is exactly why the Bank decided to host their first-ever “Love Lives Here” Drive to benefit the Be Like Brit foundation. We are pleased to announce the fundraiser was a resounding success! In fact, because of the overwhelming support of local neighbors and community members, we were able to assist the foundation in carrying out their mission, which was inspired by their daughter, who was volunteering in Haiti when the deadly earthquake struck.
North Brookfield Savings Bank is proud to be a strong supporter of nonprofits and the talented and ambitious volunteers who run them. They believe that everybody, regardless of their financial circumstances, should have the opportunity to learn and grow in a safe and nurturing environment.
Throughout the entire month of March, North Brookfield Savings Bank collected “in need” supplies and monetary donations at all branch locations in North Brookfield, East Brookfield, West Brookfield, Ware, Belchertown, and Three Rivers. 100% of donations collected will directly benefit The Be Like Brit Foundation headquartered in Worcester, MA. We were able to raise just under $500 in addition to hundreds of donations of “in-need” items. We even had a North Brookfield Savings Bank retiree make a large donation to the drive to kick things off.
“North Brookfield Savings Bank is incredibly proud to host the “Love Lives Here” Collection Drive. We want to support Brit’s mission to serve the children of Haiti by establishing a safe, nurturing, and sustainable orphanage in an environment where they can grow, learn and thrive. Brit Lived her life by this mission,” said Andrea Healy, First Senior Vice President, and Director of Human Resources.

ABOUT THE BE LIKE BRIT FOUNDATION
Be Like Brit is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the children of Haiti. Be Like Brit will continue the compassionate life and legacy of Britney Gengel by establishing a safe, nurturing and sustainable orphanage in an environment where children can grow, learn and thrive. In many ways, Britney Gengel from Rutland Massachusetts was a typical 19-year-old young woman, but her humor, passion and deep sense of caring for those less fortunate made her memorable to all who met her. It was her compassion for others that brought Britney to Haiti on January 11, 2010, just a day before a catastrophic earthquake claimed an estimated 230,000 lives and rocked the small, poverty-stricken country. Britney had spent the day visiting a Haitian orphanage where she and fellow students of Lynn University on a “Journey of Hope”, met the Haitian orphans they had traveled so far to help. Just a few hours later, Britney, three of her fellow students, and two Lynn University professors lost their lives in the rubble of the Hotel Montana in Port-Au-Prince. Britney was missing for 33 days before her remains were recovered. Fortunately, Britney’s dream did not die with her. Only hours before the earthquake, Britney sent a text message to her family that read: “They love us so much and everyone is so happy. They love what they have and they work so hard to get nowhere, yet they are all so appreciative. I want to move here and start an orphanage myself.” These forty words would sustain Britney’s family through the tragedy and, ultimately, serve as the driving force behind the establishment of the Be Like Brit Foundation and the decision to build an orphanage in Grand Goâve for the children of Haiti. Mission: To serve the children of Haiti by establishing a safe, nurturing and sustainable orphanage in an environment where they can grow, learn and thrive. Learn more at https://belikebrit.org/

Second Chance Helping Dog Facing Serious Trauma
Nonprofit is Asking for Help Caring for Puppy Named Natty
NORTH BROOKFIELD, MA (April 24, 2023) – Second Chance Animal Services is caring for a sweet 8-month-old shelter pup who suffered serious trauma to his leg. Natty came to Second Chance in great pain, enduring one of the most serious injuries a dog can face - a degloving injury to his leg. Skin and tissue were torn from the bone and muscle, leaving his limb exposed and vulnerable.
Second Chance veterinarians attempted to save Natty's leg, but unfortunately, the injury was too severe. Despite pain meds and monitoring, he was in so much distress and pain that he was trying to chew his leg off. Doctors had no choice but to amputate his leg to provide him with comfort.
“Natty was rushed into surgery this morning. We couldn’t let him wait another moment in pain, but now we’re asking for help. The costs for Natty's care and surgery are great due to the severity of his injury,” said Second Chance Chief Development Officer Lindsay Doray. “We estimate his care may be close to $2,500 and we’re grateful for any help for this sweet pup. Donations will help give Natty and pets like him who come to Second Chance with major medical needs.”
The nonprofit has shared Natty’s story on their website and social media. Those interested in helping can visit secondchanceanimals.org/natty to make a donation. Checks can also be mailed to Second Chance, PO Box 136, East Brookfield, MA 01515. Your donation will be matched by Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

Second Chance Looking for Fosters for Rare Gems
Nonprofit Launches Program to Match Longtime Shelter Residents with Foster Families
|
|
PHOTO: (L-R) Rare Gems Pecan, Ruby and Houston are looking for foster homes.
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (April 27, 2023) – Have you ever wanted to help a shelter dog, but you aren't ready to take on the lifelong commitment? Second Chance Animal Services is looking for fosters to join our Rare Gems Foster crew! This can be a great way to make a huge difference in the life of a shelter pet by fostering for a short time at no cost.
What is a Rare Gem? It’s a dog who has been at the shelter for longer than usual due to specific needs. They are diamonds in the rough who need just a bit of time, patience, and polishing!
Living in a shelter can be a stressful experience for dogs, no matter how wonderful the shelter. Space and activity are limited compared to a home, and they are exposed to all the activity and noise of their neighbors. For older dogs or dogs who are stressed by the presence of other animals, this can be even more challenging.
Many wonder whether it would be more stressful for a dog to go into a foster home, only to be brought back. The opposite is true. Research has shown that cortisol levels (stress hormones) drop when shelter dogs spend as little as 24 hours outside the shelter. When the dogs returned to the shelter their cortisol levels increased but are still below their baseline levels. Some dogs were also reported to have improved behavior and more relaxed demeanor upon returning to the shelter.
In a home environment shelter dogs can decompress and get more sleep and individualized attention. Another huge benefit is the opportunity to learn more about the dog. This information makes it easier to find the right permanent placement. This is especially important for dogs who already may have barriers to getting adopted, such as being a senior dog, a shy dog, or needing to be the only pet. A foster family can also help the dog learn house manners and improve their social skills if needed.
Pecan is one dog who would really benefit from some time in a foster home. She can be a nervous girl but attaches to her caretaker and then settles down. Pecan is a high-energy dog who has learned some skills and would love someone to keep working with her. Socialization is so good for her, and lots of exercise would help tire her out. She would like a dog friend, but kids might make her nervous. She is a super smart girl and might like to be an agility dog. A foster situation would give staff the information they need to help find her a forever family.
Second Chance is also looking for a foster home for the aptly named rare gem RUBY! Ruby is 9.5-year-old English setter/bulldog mix. Her ideal weight would be around 50 pounds, but she is currently underweight and receiving care to reach a healthy weight. Ruby needs a foster home with no other pets or children in the home. Her ideal home would also include a comfy dog bed (or couch!) to snooze on, and a fenced yard to stretch her legs in because she still gets zoomies. Most of all...a gentle patient foster parent who gives Ruby space to be herself.
The nonprofit also needs a foster for 8-year-old Houston. He’s mostly likely a Lab/boxer/terrier mix and weighs about 70 pounds. Houston knows several commands and appears to be housebroken. His foster should have experience with large dogs and have no other pets or children in the home. Houston loves to chase toys and carry them around and hopes for a comfy dog bed for naps and a fenced yard for exercise.
Being a Rare Gems foster can be a great opportunity for students taking dog behavior classes to learn and practice what they are learning. Rare Gems fosters should live within 45 minutes of one of the Second Chance vet hospitals so they can easily receive continued veterinary care. Anyone interested in becoming a Rare Gems foster should email [email protected] for more information.

“Grow With Us” Plant Sale at Hitchcock
Kicks Off Lively Season of Spring Events
BRIMFIELD – On Saturday, May 6th from 8am to 2pm, Hitchcock’s lawn will be bursting with flowers and plants for the taking in its annual “Grow With Us” Plant Sale. The array will include perennials, annuals, vegetable plants, and hanging plants - which make a great gift for Mother’s Day. Orders can also be placed for bee boxes and bat houses for pickup at a later date. The homes for bees and bats help with pollination and mosquito mitigation, respectively. Established at Hitchcock in 2020, the organization’s popular annual “Grow With Us” Plant Sale was previously a fundraiser for the now retired Brimfield Ambulance Fund. Volunteers/staff will be on hand to answer plant questions to help customers get the best out of their gardens. Including members of the Southbridge Garden Club.
For anyone looking to thin out their garden beds, plant donations can be dropped off in front of the building the week before through the evening of Friday, May 5. Donors should be sure to label the plant and include any other information (such as color and sun or shade preference) on the label. Unwanted empty pots are also welcome and can be dropped off at any time now.
Plant Sale customers can also visit the Brimfield Farmers’ Market, hosted across the street in Hitchcock’s parking lot on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. With the exception of Brimfield Flea Market weeks (May 9-14, July 11-16, September 5-10), the market runs weekly until the end of October. Homemade goods and locally-grown, seasonal plants, produce, meat, baked goods, maple products, ice cream, wooden and sewn crafts, soap, and more can be found at the market, with vendors varying week to week.
Hitchcock will also host a pop-up event from the Carol Rivest Memorial Foundation. CRMF will have a free shop set-up offering women’s gently-used professional and casual attire from 10am to 1pm on May 17th. For more information, contact Sheila Rivest at 413.668.8885 or [email protected].
On Saturday, June 10 from 8am to 3pm is Hitchcock’s annual “Trash to Treasure” Town-Wide Tag Sale. As the saying goes, “One man's trash is another man's treasure”. In no place is that truer, perhaps, than in the town that hosts one of the world’s largest and most popular outdoor flea markets. The Town-Wide Tag Sale, a favorite town event, is a great opportunity to make some extra cash from your spring cleaning or those unwanted items you just inherited from your great aunt.
Registering for the tag sale gets your location and a listing of key items a spot on our map, making it easier for treasure and bargain hunters to find you. Participating houses will receive an identifying number to post at the road that corresponds to the map. Registration is $12 per house. If you don’t have a good location to host your own tag sale, there are spots available for rent on Hitchcock’s lawn for $30. Maps of the registered tag sales will be available in print for just $2 at Hitchcock beginning the day before and throughout the event as well as at a neighbor’s sale at 8 North Main Street.
"Hitchcock's Farmers' Market, Plant Sale, and Town-Wide Tag Sale are long-standing favorite community events that mark the start of spring and bring people together," says Trustee Carrie DelToro. "I can think of no better way to reconnect with community and kick off the season."
Sponsors are welcome for the Town-Wide Tag Sale. Interested local businesses can reach out to Cindy Skowrya, Executive Director, for more information at [email protected].
Hitchcock continues to host a vibrant line-up of classes for all ages and interests. Spring classes currently enrolling include Let’s Cake Decorate’s Cupcake Flower Basket on May 11th, High Fitness which starts May 16th, and Intro to Mosaics on May 17th. Along with ongoing sessions of a variety of fitness classes, a new session of Discover The Artist Within: A Watercolor Class, begins on June 1st.
Hitchcock Academy is a community center located at 2 Brookfield Road in Brimfield serving the community with educational, recreational, and cultural programming. More information can be found at www.hitchcockacademy.org.

Muster Day at Old Sturbridge Village
May 6, 2023
The Village is open from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm
To supplement the meager armed forces, most early 19th-century farmers and craftsmen were required by law to serve in local militia units – the forerunner of today’s National Guard. Twice a year, these citizen-soldiers were “called to muster” for a day of training in their town. Old Sturbridge Village re-creates a typical Muster Day and celebrates our local military history. Demonstrations will include marching, musket and cannon firing, and target practice.
Did you know?
- The 1792 Militia Act stated required nearly all white men from 18-45 to serve in the militia as part of their civic obligation to their communities. Indigenous Peoples and people of color were explicitly barred from serving in the militia, ensuring the primacy of white manhood as an important element of citizenship.
- All men liable for service in early 19th-century New England had to provide their own equipment: a musket and bayonet, a cartridge box containing 24 rounds of ammunition and two flints, and a knapsack.
- While commonly associated with Christmas today, gingerbread was a favorite treat enjoyed during early 19th century muster days.
Also, save the date for our next Muster Day: September 2, 2023!
