Festival of Courage - Friday, October 1st
Each year at Mountain Song, we embrace the vigor of Autumn by celebrating our in-school Festival of Courage. We gather the golden light and strength of the late summer sunshine and move forward with courage toward the colder, darker months. This festival invites children to gather their courage to accomplish the challenges they face.

On Friday, October 1st, our Games and Movement teacher, Mrs. Denise Neal, with the help of faculty, students, and Parent Council, creates an obstacle course in which every student in grades 1-8 has the chance to conquer fears and demonstrate courage! The obstacle course provides fun, physical challenges for students to overcome, all in the spirit of the Festival of Courage.

We look forward to bringing this treasured celebration at Mountain Song Community School to all of our students!
Child Safety Drop-Off Routine
We love our students, and we are so concerned about safety in the morning during drop-off. Please take extra time and follow the established routine for dropping off students in the morning.

  • Drop-Off Lanes. Drop off students on 29th Street (east of the school) or on Kiowa Street (front) where staff are present to help guide students into school. These are no parking zones - please do not park in them.

  • Park Safely, Properly, and Legally.  To leave your vehicle and walk your child to the school, please park properly and legally (not in the drop-off lanes), and cross the streets carefully.

  • No U-Turns.  Instead, please go around the block. U-turns are extremely dangerous on these narrow roads, and they seriously endanger others.

  • Stop Your Vehicle Before Opening Doors. Yes, we’ve had near heart attacks seeing doors opened while a vehicle is still moving.

Thank you for your care!
Mr. Adam Wright
Finalist for Mayor’s Young Leader Awards
Mr. Adam Wright, Mountain Song’s Agricultural Arts Program Coordinator, is among five educators named as finalists for the Mayor’s Young Leader Awards that celebrate bold and innovative young professionals making a significant positive impact in Colorado Springs.

Mr. Adam has developed a curriculum that integrates state standards, Waldorf standards, and Next Generation Science Standards. Alongside his co-teacher, Mr. Matt Thomas, he teaches approximately 300 students, manages parent and community volunteers, and oversees our community garden.

He also volunteers his time planning and fundraising for the new garden at our new school location, donates food to families in need, and supports other area farms and community gardens.

"There’s a beautiful saying by David Sobel that Mr. Adam so perfectly embodies… ‘Give children a chance to love the earth before we ask them to save it.’ Adam lives and breathes that more than anyone I know,” said Dr. Teresa Woods, Executive Director of Mountain Song. “Our Agricultural Arts program would not be what it is today without Adam’s efforts. It is awe-inspiring to see the fire he has ignited in the hearts of our students.”

Winners will be announced during the 2021 Mayor’s Young Leaders Ceremony on October 28th from 4-6 p.m at 3E’s Comedy Club.

Best of luck, Mr. Adam! You’ve already won in our eyes!
Updates: Staff Members and Roles
Ms. Tracy Gonzalez, Handwork Teacher
We are overjoyed now that Ms. Tracy started teaching Handwork in the classes this week! Her dedication to developing fine skills in our students, a love of creating, and a deep sense of ecological responsibility through the Waldorf pedagogy is so valued! Welcome to this new role, Ms. Tracy!
Ms. Brittany Hasenbalg,
Administrative Assistant
We feel so fortunate that Ms. Brittany Hasenbalg has joined us in the front office. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, and a very calm demeanor that helps us all.
Mr. Manuel Gonzales, Custodian
Bringing care and attention to our building and grounds, Mr. Manny is a steady, dedicated and joyful presence at our school. We are delighted to have him on our team.
Our Love to Mrs. Carson
Mrs. Nancy Carson has made the difficult decision to resign this year due to personal reasons out of her control. Her love of and loyalty to the 8th grade class and to the school made the decision quite painful, but we fully understand and support her decision. Mrs. Carson has been a steadfast supporter of Mountain Song, the Waldorf approach, her colleagues and administrators, students and families, and the future of the school. She has mentored new teachers and helped so many find solace during the pandemic. Her Ponderosa class formed the core of her dedication to the school, and she had been their class teacher since second grade. She has expressed utmost confidence in and gratitude for Ms. Alisia McCabe carrying the combined 8th grade class forward through this year.

We know a huge part of her heart will always be with Mountain Song, and she will be in ours. We hope she visits us, and we wish her all the very best, with all our love.
Economic Data Survey Forms
Thank you to everyone who has completed and submitted your Economic Data Survey form! If you have not completed it, please do so as soon as possible. Even if you do not think you will qualify, we strongly encourage you to fill out this form.

We need a high rate of participation in order to have an accurate representation of our school’s demographics. This information is critical for additional funding that the school may be eligible to receive. Please complete and return your Economic Data Survey form to the front office.

October Count Day
is October 1st
October Student Count Day is when all public schools in Colorado report the number of enrolled students. Did you know that daily student attendance impacts school budgets for the rest of the school year? Make sure your student is counted!

What Is Count Day?
The Student October Count is based on a one (1) day count in which all public schools and districts in Colorado report all students who are actively enrolled and attending classes through their district on that date. This year, the official Count Day is October 1st.

Why Does it Matter?
State funding is allocated based on the number of students actively attending and enrolled in our school during October Count (22-54-101, C.R.S.). These are the students who remain on our rolls for the remainder of the year.

What If My Student is Sick That Day?
While we strive to have all students present on Count Day, we understand some students might be sick. If a student is absent on Count day, we must present proof that the student was enrolled and attending within 5 days prior to Count Day and within 5 days after Count Day. So long as we can document that a student attended prior to and after Count Day within this 11-day window, we can count that student as officially enrolled. Please DON'T schedule family vacations or extended absences during this time.

The Mountain Maple 6th Grade students have been studying geometric patterns in nature. To deepen their learning, they were challenged to create nature designs during their time in the garden for Agricultural Arts. These photos capture some of their beautiful artwork!
