Thoughts with Mr. Watts
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
- Philippians 2:3-4
Hello St. Catharine Families:

On this feast day of St. Matthew, I see how with God's grace, someone could leave the luxuries that a tax collector was accustomed to, drop everything, and follow Jesus. As someone who changed careers 4 times after turning 40, I know the anxiety change can cause. I also know firsthand how different a life can be when you follow Jesus Christ.

There are so many lessons and parables In Matthew's Gospel that have become the foundation of catechesis and Christian teaching. The Beatitudes in chapter 5, the Prodigal Son, the Good Samaritan, and the origin of the Corporal Works of Mercy in Matthew 25 are all important in learning about who Jesus is and how we can get to heaven.

There are also verses in Matthew that are particularly meaningful to me, personally. In addition to the foundational teachings in Matthew gospel, there are also verses that I turn to often, including:

Matthew 6:5
Matthew 10:34
Matthew 18:6
Matthew 22:20-21
Matthew 23:4

May Saint Matthew and all of the Saints watch over us and our School Community.

COVID-19
One of the factors the Diocese is monitoring is the 7-Day Average Case Rate in Franklin County per 100,000. As of now, we are at 328. Once that number get below 100 (like it was before school started), the Diocesan task force will make a decision on how to move forward.

We will continue to take the necessary precautions to keep everyone healthy and safe. Please keep doing the following.

Symptoms
  1. Keep your child home if they are sick.
  2. If they have COVID symptoms, please request a home test and have them tested immediately.
  3. They can return to school if they tested negative and are asymptomatic for 24 hours.

Exposure
  1. Notify the school as soon as possible if you have a positive case in your household
  2. Try to have the positive case isolate from the rest of the familiy (if possible).
  3. If your child was exposed to someone that tested positive for COVID, they can take a test for COVID 5-7 days after last exposure (3-5 if vaccinated) and return to school on Day 8 (as opposed to day 11.

Education in Virtue
Our Virtue for this week is Generosity. Generosity is one of the related virtues of Justice.

Generosity means giving oneself in a willing and cheerful manner for the good of others.

Generosity in Scripture
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” - Mark 12:41-44

May God Bless all of you and your families during this time.

Yours in Christ,

Mark Watts

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. – Isaiah 43:2
If anyone in your household would have a Positive COVID-19 test result, or if any student has knowingly been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, you must notify Mr. Watts by calling or texting (614) 949-7713 as soon as possible, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

We are required to post positive cases of students and staff on our website weekly. Currently, we have 1 active case and
1 cumulative case with students and staff for the current school year.
Starting immediately we will be asking all families to send an email to attendance@stcathschool.com to report their student's absence. No need to call the office. This is a much more efficient way for our office staff to track attendance.

Please include:
  • Student's Name
  • Grade
  • Reason for absence
  • Symptoms
  • Date of return, if known
Please Complete Your Forms

All parents received an email on Thursday, September 9 regarding the student emergency forms that need to be completed by Wednesday, September 15. Please access the message by using the button below. Students will not be able to attend school starting Thursday, September 16, if the forms are not completed. Please take the time to IMMEDIATELY complete the forms, if you have not already.

Meet Our Intervention Team
Caitlin Kemp

My name is Caitlin Kemp and I've been serving the St. Catharine's school community as an intervention specialist since August 2019. I previously served in Columbus City School for 6 years before staying home with my children. There are four Kemp kids, Finn (2nd grade), Emma (1st grade, Abbie (Pre-k), and Liam. Returning to teach at my alma mater (class of 2001) has been such a gift. In fact, the St. Catharine community has been the center of our family for generations. My great grandparents were part of this community when the church was built and were part of the first parishioners to attend the church. My grandmother was in the first graduating class of the little one-room school and my father, as well as his 5 other siblings, are all graduates of this amazing parish school. This makes my children 5th generation parishioners and 4th generation school attendees. My husband, Joe, went through the RCIA process here and we were married here in 2011. So, it is safe to say, we love St. Catharine's!
On the professional side of things, I graduated from Ohio Dominican University in 2009 with a dual Intervention License for mild/moderate and moderate/intensive K-12 intervention. I then graduated from ODU, again, in 2011 with a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I have continued my education through Lourdes University, with 20 extra semester hours.
My love for intervention stems from my beautiful sister, Erin. As a micro-preemie, she was born with several physical and mental disabilities. Her journey through a few intervention programs in Columbus City Schools and Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities gave me the opportunity, from a young age, to experience the joy and fulfillment of serving children with different needs. Throughout high school and college, I worked for an organization as a home aid for young adults with disabilities. By the time I was ready for college, my career path was crystal clear.
Being here at St. Catharine's is such a privilege and I look forward to continuing to serve this outstanding parish community.
Molly Kim

My name is Molly Kim and I have been teaching for 11 years. Most of my time has been spent teaching preschool age, but I was excited at the opportunity to work in Intervention last year. I received my education from Capital University and am licensed in Early Childhood, Intervention, and reading. I’m married and have two wonderful children, who both attend St. Catharine School. We’ve been parishioners of St. Catharine for almost 8 years and feel so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful church and school community.

Maya Ratliff

My name is Maya Ratliff and this is my second year here at St. Catharine. I was one of the Kindergarten teachers last year and it was such an amazing experience working with those students, their families, and the whole St. Catharine community to make the best of my first year of teaching. I am so excited to be taking on two new roles this year in intervention and preschool! I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in the first grade, and I felt a particular draw to intervention after doing tutoring at my grade school with some of the younger students with special needs. I find that working in intervention gives me the opportunity to more intentionally support students and staff as we find ways to give students the best chance for success in our school. I am constantly reminded of the ways that the Father calls each of us to open our hearts to others as He opens His heart to us. Please pray for me, my students, and all those who work with me as we navigate a new school year!

Volunteers are an invaluable group of individuals who provide a sense of community for the many parish and school activities at St. Catharine. It is the expectation of the St. Catharine Advisory Board that each parish family fulfills their obligation to actively support and participate in the parish and school. In addition, it is expected that parents volunteer their time and talent in helping with church and school-sponsored activities and programs. Such involvement is not only necessary for financial stability, but parents can provide a valuable service to the school and to the children by their dedication and support. In order that tuition rates may be kept at a reasonable level, parents are asked to volunteer for a minimum of 50 hours.
