Bernie's Bark
8.23.2022
Dear Parents-

On Monday we observed a memorial in honor of the Queenship of Mary, celebrated 8 days after the Assumption of Our Blessed Mother into Heaven. Mary’s Queenship is depicted in the last of the Glorious Mysteries..the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Pope Pius XII established this feast proclaiming, “We are instituting a feast so that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and maternal sway of the Mother of God…”

Many thanks to all parents who were able to stop by on Sunday for our start of the year Meet and Greet! It was so great to see returning families and say hello to our new! In addition, a huge shout-out to our PTO Executive Board who worked together to create this event. I am excited to be working with such an energized group, and pray that many parents will consider volunteering to support the PTO functions this year! If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to any board member…Lisa Schultz, Jessica Ingham, Giselle SotoGil, Maureen Morgan, JoEllen Mountcastle, Sarah McLean and Anthony DiMario, or email PTO@sjschoolva.org.

Back-to-School Nights are scheduled for Tuesday, August 30 for grades 2-5; and Wednesday, August 31 for grades 6-8. Doors open at 6:00 both evenings for fellowship, and a call to order at 6:40, at which time, Father Tom will lead us in enthroning our school to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, dedicating ourselves to live the Christian way and practice Christian virtues. Use this link to access the evenings’ agendas. Back to School Night is an opportunity to become acquainted with your child’s teacher, learn about the curriculum and plans for the year, meet the other parents, and it lets your child know how important school is! We look forward to seeing you!!

Through the grace of God, we have moved beyond the pandemic. However, COVID still exists. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Fairfax County Health Department recommendations with respect to COVID related illness found here. In addition please remember that Children with fevers, contagious, or infectious diseases will be sent home promptly and excluded from school while in that condition, per Virginia Department of Health regulations. Once the student is confirmed to be free of communicable illness by a healthcare provider or is fever free/symptom free for 24 hours without taking anti-fever medications, the student may return to school, afterschool, and extracurricular activities.

Students should never carry medications to school. All OTC and prescription medications are to be kept locked in the clinic/school office and be administered by the school nurse, clinic aide, principal or trained designee. No student is to carry/possess medications, without appropriate medical authorization. No medication will be administered unless the school has received a signed copy of the Medication Authorization Form (Appendix F-6). OTC medications do not require a health care provider’s signature unless the medication is required for four (4) or more consecutive days. All health related questions should be directed to our school nurse, Mrs. Ezenwa, a.ezenwa@sjschoolva.org or 703-880-4318.

All parents are invited to join us for the first school Mass, Friday, August 26 at 9:30. School safety measures include locking the church doors promptly at the start of Mass so please be sure to arrive on time.

We truly missed everyone over the summer, and we are looking forward to the arrival of the students tomorrow-and a great school year ahead!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Refreshed, revived and renewed by "faith, love and hope." (1Thess. 1:2-3)

Dear Saints Families,

We hope you have been enjoying a healthy and happy summer! The Arlington Diocese NVJCYO Cross Country and Track & Field Fall 2022 seasons will begin soon and we hope that your young athletes will join our St. Joseph's Parish team in some healthy practices and competitions as your family's schedules allow.

Who can participate? Cross Country and Track & Field training is available for all St. Joseph’s 2nd-8th grade parishioners (SJS, CCD or home school). [NOTE: 2nd graders are eligible to practice with the team and will be permitted to run in cross country meets; but, the Track & Field meet will only be available to 3rd through 8th graders.]

Where and When?   Calendar link: SJ XC and Track & Field Calendar
Practices:
Competitions:
  • Oct 8 Track & Field Meet at Bishop O’Connell High School
  • in the past, a morning meet (7:30am to approx. noon) included grades 6-8 and an afternoon meet (noon to approx. 6pm) included grades 3-5
  • rain date: Oct 9
  • 3 Cross Country meets [Times TBD]:
  • Sep 17: Developmental Cross Country Meet #1 at Lee District Park
  • Oct 15: Developmental Cross Country Meet #2 at Saint Paul VI High School
  • Nov 5: Championship Cross Country Meet at Fort Hunt Park

How much does it cost?
  • $30 for an individual and $20 for each additional sibling will cover practice and meet fees, drinks, and an end of season party
  • Team shirts will be purchased separately if you do not already have one
  • Families with athletes who choose to compete in the Arlington Diocese Meets will also be asked to volunteer time to help manage events

How do we join?
  1. Attached Paper forms can be filled out, signed and returned by email or printed and handed to a coach at the first practice
  2. Health and emergency contact information
  3. Code of conduct
  4. Payments can be submitted using a debit or credit card during the Diocese Online registration process [Coming soon... we will email the link when available]

Why should we join?
  • Be part of our team! As a combination of individual and team events, the Track & Field and Cross Country program offers an opportunity for each person to be part of a group that encourages each other to improve in running, jumping, and throwing. Individual events are offered across several age groups and levels of skill and motivation. The more each athlete wants to train, the faster he or she will improve his/her abilities. Several members join to train to compete in the meet while others join for the great cross-training this offers for other sports. We can all improve individually and as a team!
  • Flexible schedules: Teammates and families are encouraged to join as many practices and meets as family schedules can accommodate; but, there are no minimum time commitments. You are also welcome to try out a practice before enrolling.
  • Low-cost family fun: access to multiple practices/meets per week from late Aug to early Nov… Parents are also encouraged to join in the running, jumping and throwing (or helping manage event training, keep scores, etc.) with our student athletes.

Please pass along this invitation to any other members of the St. Joseph’s parish who may be interested in joining. And, please let us know if you are unable to join and would like to be removed from our email list.

Thank you from your SJS Track & Field Coaching team!
