The new playground in Glen Oak Park is designed with key features that ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all children. The central playground unit is accessible by mobility devices to the highest platform, offering climbers of varying challenge levels and opportunities for parallel play among users with diverse abilities. The space boasts five unique sliding experiences, cozy spots for breaks, shaded areas for caregivers, a musical area, and an inclusive whirl that can be accessed by all users, including those with mobility devices.
One of the standout features is the 35-foot-long zipline, which allows side-by-side gliding with both a typical user seat and an inclusive rider seat for those with limited upper body strength. Sensory panels offering audio, visual, and tactile stimulation are spread across the play space, along with a communication board and a switch-enabled panel for users with non-typical communication needs. The playground also features poured in place surfacing, providing easy access to all areas.
"An inclusive playground is a necessary addition to our community and the Glen Oak Playground has been in process since 2021. Great things sometimes require patience and persistence, both of which have been exhibited by our Board of Trustees who prioritized this effort,” stated Emily Cahill, Executive Director of the Peoria Park District. “This playground is the embodiment of our shared commitment to make our spaces and places welcoming to ALL members of our community to the greatest extent possible.”
In addition to the playground, an accompanying shelter and accessible restrooms will be open next spring.
Following the ribbon cutting, the community is invited to the park’s amphitheater space to be a part of the District’s celebration of its 130th anniversary from 2-7pm. Founders Day will be celebrated here to honor Glen Oak Park’s designation as the first park in the District. Planned festivities include live entertainment, kids’ activities, soda tastings, vendors, food trucks and will close with a performance by the Peoria Municipal Band and a water lantern lighting and launch on the Glen Oak Lagoon.
