INTRODUCING OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR: Jessica Grote, DNP, RN, NPD-BC

AgriSafe is so very excited to welcome Dr. Jessi Grote to the team as our Professional Development Coordinator! Her main role is to build AgriSafe's capacity for continuing education offerings for AgriSafe's various trainings. Dr. Grote ranches with her husband and children in the Nebraska Panhandle. She has worked as an RN in a variety of rural settings from critical care to critical access, to quality, engagement, administration, education, and as an adjunct faculty. She also founded and runs a nonprofit (Foster Love with Beef) which provides beef to foster families, she works as a home health and hospice nurse, and she volunteers as an EMT in her local rural community.

Dr. Grote received her bachelors degree from South Dakota State University (Go Jacks!), holds a masters degree in Nursing Education from Gonzaga University, and completed her Doctorate in Nursing Practice with a focus on Executive Leadership, with her final project being on "Transportation and Access to Care in a Rural Nebraska Village." She is in the Association for Nursing Professional Development, the Nebraska Center for Nursing, National Rural Health Association, and Nebraska Rural Health Association, and holds her board certification in Nursing Professional Development.

NURSE SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT: Michelle Rickel, RN, Paramedic

AgriSafe is excited to feature Michelle Rickel in August's AgriSafe Nurse Scholar spotlight! Michelle completed the Nurse Scholar Program in 2023, and is currently a Staff Nurse/First Responder for Burlingame Fire District #6 / Coffey Health System. The AgriSafe team would like to say a big thank you to Michelle for all of the work that she does in protecting the health and safety of agricultural communities in Kansas!

Why Michelle became a nurse...

"I have always wanted to be able to help others. I used to play nurse on the playground at school in 2nd Grade. Brings me joy to know that when people are ill or injured, I am there to help them in any way I can."

Her favorite thing about being a nurse is...

"Helping others when in need. Making sure the patients get the best education possible. Knowing I made a difference in someone's life."

"The AgriSafe Nurse Scholar Program has allowed me to be more assertive in thinking outside the box when assessing injured or ill patients in the ER and as a First Responder." -Michelle Rickel

Some of the most popular handouts were the Heat-Related Illnesses fact sheet, the Reproductive Health Exposures for Women in Agriculture fact sheet, the AgriStress Helpline wristbands, and the Talking Total Farmer Health podcast postcard!

AUGUST HEALTH SPOTLIGHT:

National Immunizations Month

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)! This month is held to recognize the importance of immunizations and vaccines. Immunizations are one of the most cost-effective public health interventions, averting an estimated 4.4 million deaths yearly (UNICEF).

Did you know that rural U.S. residents, when compared to urban residents, have more concerns regarding safety, long-term side effects, effectiveness, and necessity of vaccines (CDC 2023)? One way to improve vaccine and immunization confidence is through education and outreach that addresses just what vaccines do and why they're important for families and for farm animals.

Video: Avian Flu on Dairy Farms: What Clinicians and Dairy Worker Patients Need to Know

Dairy workers should take precautions to keep themselves and others safe from the health risks of avian influenza by wearing proper PPE, following their farm's biosecurity practices, getting their annual flu shot, and watching for symptoms. Learn more with the flyer above, Avian Influenza: Guidance for Dairy Workers, which is a CS-CASH and UNMC resource.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION WEEK: September 3-6

Each year, during Respiratory Protection Week, the importance of respiratory protection in the workplace is highlighted with an emphasis on providing resources to help individuals make educated decisions when selecting and wearing a respirator. If exposed to respiratory hazards at work, it’s best to apply the hierarchy of controls

The use of respiratory protection is an important “last line of defense” in the hierarchy of controls approach. Agricultural workers across the United States rely on respiratory protection to keep them safe while providing fuel, food, and fiber to the world. We hope you’ll join us for Respiratory Protection Week 2024 to help keep ag workers safe from respiratory hazards. Learn more here!
