Overcome Write Fright

Does the thought of writing terrify you as much as binge watching Halloween movies? Do negative thoughts defeat you before you complete your first sentence? Are you stuck in the middle of a creative project? Try shifting from your head to your heart, mind mapping, simple starts, and reading poetry to overcome "write fright."

1. Shift from head to heart
To focus on "can" instead of "can't" for your writing, get out of your head and move into your heart. Creativity starts in the heart.

How? Gently tap your fingers on the middle of your chest and focus on your heart center. Relax and breathe deeply. Imagine breathing in positive thoughts for patience and clarity about your endeavor. Breathe out anger, frustration, disappointment, or whatever limitations you perceive. Finally, listen to nature sounds like humpback whales, birds, ocean waves, or whatever puts you in a serene mood.

2. Mind mapping
Once you are centered in your heart, mind mapping provides an avenue for releasing ideas onto paper. Refer to the mind-mapping link below for excellent examples. Use large, blank paper to engage your right brain and write cursive to use both hemispheres of your brain.

3. Start something simple
This "SSS" exercise moves you from being stuck to taking a step on your writing journey.

Start with something simple. Jot down a sentence about what you see in front of you. Then look around and write a paragraph about the most interesting thing you see or hear. Next, write a page about something you have enjoyed. A funny movie, best meal, walk in nature, school graduation, or something crazy a family member did that made you LOL.

Focus on writing about a person or event that brings you joy and let that bridge into completing your writing or creative project.

4. Read poetry before writing

During an Atlanta Writers Club webinar last weekend, I learned that New York Times best-selling author, Pat Conroy, read poetry before writing his novels.

Poetry encourages authors to choose words wisely for precise and lean content.

Excerpt from Chapter 35:

"Somehow I just knew we had friends among the stars."

Do you want to believe we have friends "out there" in the stars? Like the Vulcans in those Star Trek movies, could the Gallions or other friendly aliens help us learn to live peacefully? Or do humans need to figure out world peace over world domination in order for good aliens to make contact with us?
