The Hope Foundation for Cancer Research funds vital grants and fellowships that advance what’s important to us all: the treatment and prevention of cancer. We can’t do it without you.
Deniscer Peeler, LPN, is a nurse at Baptist Memorial Health Care/Mid South MU-NCORP in Memphis, Tennessee. She received CRA/Nurse Travel Support funding from The Hope Foundation to attend her first SWOG Cancer Research Network group meeting this past October.

Clinical research associates (CRAs) often serve as the face of clinical trials for patients, and in recent years we’ve prioritized ensuring these members have opportunities for professional development and community engagement through group meeting attendance. Ms. Peeler explained that at the end of the meeting, she felt more confident and informed:

“The group meeting showed me that my work as a CRA is important. I felt much more confident in my capabilities and more knowledgeable about SWOG studies.”
Ms. Peeler’s favorite part about being a CRA is knowing that her patients, family, and future generations will benefit from her efforts. She is committed to working with companies and individuals that further diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in research and health care; this is one reason she values her role as a SWOG member and appreciated participating in the fall conference. She was particularly inspired and empowered after a lymphoma committee talk led by Dr. Sonali Smith:

“Dr. Smith’s discussion was wonderful and motivating. Her colleague made a statement that really struck a chord with me and affirmed me in my profession. ‘One day we will not have to create a group for DEI–and that is the goal.’” Indeed, SWOG and The Hope Foundation are taking steps to ensure that DEI efforts are fully incorporated into the fabric of the network and its studies.

Without funding from The Hope Foundation, Ms. Peeler wouldn’t have been able to attend the SWOG meeting and have these experiences that directly impact her work helping patients in the clinic.

For those of you who have already made a charitable contribution to Hope this year, we are so thankful for your support. If you have not yet given, will you help empower and engage medical professionals like Ms. Peeler by donating on or before November 29 in honor of Giving Tuesday? Your gift supports SWOG members who are committed to doing their work at the highest level.

Gratefully,
