The Unity Event will feature LGBTQ speakers, representatives from Cabrillo Unified School District, local religious leaders, and local elected officials. To show further solidarity and support for CoastPride, a gathering of LGBTQ Welcoming and Inclusive Coastside Congregations will provide light refreshments, music, and crafts on Monday, October 18th, from 2pm to 6pm, at the CoastPride Center at 711 Main. CoastPride's Faith-Based Partnership of Welcoming and Inclusive Coastside Congregations include: Coastside Jewish Community, Coastside Lutheran Church, Community United Methodist Church, Holy Family Episcopal Church, Many Journeys Metropolitan Community Church, and, of course, the Unitarian Universalist Coastside Community. Join us on October 24th for our next Gallery View Sunday. Bruce Rafnel curates a TEDTalk Presentation in honor of LGBTQ History Month. The talk is entitled "Homosexuality: It's About Survival — Not Sex," by James O'Keefe, MD. This passionate talk offers a deeply personal, fascinating insight into why homosexuality is indeed a necessary and extraordinarily useful cog in nature’s wheel of perfection.
James H O’Keefe MD, is a Board Certified Cardiologist and Director of both the Charles & Barbara Duboc Cardio Health & Wellness Center and the Preventive Cardiology service at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute. He is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His postgraduate training includes a cardiology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr O’Keefe is board-certified in Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, and Cardiac CT Imaging. Among the regional and national ‘Top Doctor’ lists, he is consistently ranked as one of America’s Top Rated Physicians in Cardiology. He has been named as one of USA Today’s Most Influential Doctors. Dr O’Keefe has contributed more than 300 articles to the medical literature and has authored best-selling cardiovascular books for health professionals including: The Complete Guide to ECGs (which is used for Cardiology Board Certification), Dyslipidemia Essentials, and Diabetes Essentials.

UUCC First Sunday Service, November 7th, 11am

The Touchstones Theme for November is Non-Violence. And on November 7th, Rev. Brian Ferguson gives a sermon entitled: "Mercy: The Antidote for Anger." Mercy is a virtue which is important to many religious traditions and encourages compassionate action. Shakespeare says that mercy "blesseth him that gives and him that takes." The practice of mercy can be admired but can also be viewed as weak or naive. This worship service explores the idea of mercy and its importance for the real-life practice of non-violence and compassion.
Rev. Brian Ferguson is the newly called minister to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Redwood City and began his ministry there in August 2020. He served as the five-year Developmental Minister at Wildflower Unitarian Universalist Church in Austin, Texas and also served for five years as the called Minister at San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Central Texas. He graduated in May 2009 with a Masters of Divinity degree from Starr King School for the Ministry, the Unitarian Universalist seminary in Berkeley, California. His ministry is driven by the desire to explore and improve the human condition in an interdisciplinary and holistic way.

Locals Night Jettywave Distillery, November 4th |

With 95% of San Mateo County having received the COVID vaccines, we are ready to dip our toes into the water with a social event. Jettywave Distillery hosts Local Nights the first Thursdays of each month from 3pm to 8pm. Please join UUCC for our very first in-person, social gathering since the "Before Times" at Jettywave on Thursday, November 4th, from 3pm to 5pm. Those wishing to come and socialize only with masks on are cordially invited. We ask, however, that you only attend if you are fully vaccinated. We can't wait to see you all in person again!

We’re looking for volunteers:
(1) Social Media Coordinator: to manage our twice-monthly newsletter, and upload content to our website and Facebook page. A four-hour commitment every two weeks.
(2) Participating in an online service is easier than you think. We are in need of Chalice Lighters and Worship Associates for our Third Sunday Gallery View services. The schedule is lighter and we'll be with every step of the way to make it a pleasant and enriching learning experience.
(3) Fill our newsletter with the diversity that makes UU stand apart from other faiths. Send in poems, inspirational quotes, YouTube music video links, social action notices, and articles of interest to uucoastside@gmail.com.
