Greetings!
As summer begins and we open windows and spend more time outside, remember to enjoy the moments in your day. These may be moments of connection with another person, some calm in a busy day, or just taking a breath (either with or without mask). Acknowledge the events of the past year and what we've all endured, take pride in the accomplishment of arriving to this moment, and find peace in the present. This month's principle, slowing down, encourages us to be present, with ourselves and for those in our care.

This Month’s Key Montessori Principle Is
“Match your speed to theirs. Slow Down!”

We may often feel that something can be done faster or better if we just do it ourselves. But doing so can deprive someone in our care, with or without dementia, of dignity, autonomy, and the sense of accomplishment in doing a task on their own. When we are willing to slow down, we may discover that someone is actually capable of more than we thought. Resist the urge to get more done in less time, and allow someone else to move at their own pace as they engage with the environment.
This will also help build a relationship. Think of a time when someone was teaching you a new technology or skill? If they speak quickly and jump to the next part before you're ready, you likely felt frustrated or anxious. Now imagine how someone with dementia will begin to feel about a care partner that always rushes them or doesn't let them try to take care of themselves. In the words of Maya Angelou, "...people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
