More Kiwanis Moments
Greetings Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanians! I hope this finds you and your families healthy and well!
I recently read an article, penned by Stan Soderstrom, executive director of Kiwanis International, titled “Not Just Service. Impact!” Stan’s main point in the article is that Kiwanis is not just a "service organization’” it is a “community impact organization!” He believes that “Kiwanis is a community impact organization because it is…not just the simple service activity … but a part of the communities’ on-going improvement.” Kiwanians serve on a regular basis, but we impact our youth and “change the trajectory of a life altogether!”
I often reference “Kiwanian Moments” in this column. You know, the activities that impact our youth and our communities that make us feel especially good. The last day of school, I was working the Public Schools’ Emergency Food Pantry and we had three new families sign up, in addition to the other families that were accessing the Food Pantry. These three families had a total of eleven in their household. The impact of the 110 pounds of food that went home with these three families that day had to be tremendous. I also get to hand out backpacks on Fridays to 65 elementary students. These backpacks contain five meals for the weekend. The local Food Bank, our partner, reports that not only do these backpacks feed the youth, but often the entire family. Talk about impact!
Kiwanians across Nebraska and Iowa, partner with a variety of community organizations to teach youth to read and enjoy books, support leadership and service programs in the schools, provide playgrounds and programs to improve health and skills, provide food to address food insecurities, … the list is long!
To quote Stan, “Kiwanians influence the directions of people’s lives. In the long run, they provide lasting inspiration – the kind that moves neighborhoods, organizations, communities, … individuals! That is true impact!” Let’s Keep the Habit of Caring, Sharing and Serving! Remember, Kids need Kiwanis!
h Kiwanian and each club find ways to live the vision of Kiwanis, and to create these “Kiwanian Moments for our members and for potential members! That is why we are Kiwanians. And yes, in today’s world, Kids need Kiwanis!

CLUB LEADERSHIP EDUCATION
The Nebraska-Iowa District has scheduled Club Leadership Education sessions for 2022-2023 club leaders. Club presidents, secretaries, treasurers and membership chairs are asked to sign up for CLE, but all Kiwanians are welcome to attend these virtual sessions. Pre-registration for all sessions is required.
Kiwanis International has also scheduled virtual CLE in August as another option for club officers to attend. These sessions will be held Aug, 1, Presidents; Aug. 2, Secretaries; Aug. 3, Treasurers; and Aug. 4, Membership. Kiwanis International has sent an email to 2022-2023 officers that have been reported with the information on how to pre-register for these CLEs.
Please Note: Incoming club officers may attend either the District OR International CLEs to get credit for the coming year.

The new Leadership Guides were mailed to club secretaries in May for distribution to incoming officers. It has come to our attention that there were some issues encountered during delivery and guides were lost in the mail. A PDF of the guide is located on the District Website on the education/training page.

HAS YOUR CLUB DONE THIS?
An important message
from the Youth Protection Manager Linda Placzek
As the District Youth Protection Manager, I want to send this message to all club presidents and club secretaries.
Kiwanis International requires that every club provide training for all members on an annual basis. The training information is available at Kiwanis.org/YouthProtection or Google Kiwanis Youth Protection and the website for this topic will come up. Also at that site, you will find the Youth Protection Guidelines Document, which is to be given to all members as part of the training. It is also necessary for the club secretary to use their monthly report to indicate that the club has completed the training.
|
|
My latest information from KI is that only 20% of the Nebraska-Iowa District have held the training and reported it to KI. This is not typical of the high standards which the District holds itself to. Let’s do better!!!
Club Presidents: Have you provided this training to your club members?
If yes, please check to see that your club secretary has documented the training on their monthly report. If no, then follow the information above to locate the training and provide it to your club members.
Club Secretaries: Has your club provided the required training?
If yes, then make sure you have reported the information to KI on your monthly report. If no, work with your club president to ensure your club members have this training before the end of the present Kiwanis year on Sept. 30 and it is reported on your monthly report.
Thanks in advance for taking care of the required training and reporting.

KIWANIS CHILDREN'S FUND
Hello, Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanians! I hope all of you are doing well!
In one month, we’ll be together at DCON in Lincoln. I hope many of you are planning to attend. It’s always good to see people that we haven’t seen for a while.
The May 31 District Giving Report was posted during the month of June. Nebraska-Iowa continues to do well with both club and individual giving. As of the end of May, Nebraska-Iowa has donated $6I,341. Amazing! I have made several thank you calls to clubs thanking them for club donations. One in particular really touched my heart. The Iowa Falls Scenic City Club donated to the Children’s Fund. They weren’t even a club at the beginning of our Kiwanis year. Iowa Falls had a club in the past but it closed a few years ago. Past members worked hard with our membership team to get going again. They have been a club for about six months and donated to the Children’s Fund. Wow! A shout out to Iowa Falls Scenic City for your generosity as a brand-new club! Thanks to all clubs and individuals who have donated so far.
We have three months to send donations. Please consider donating. Mail checks to:
Kiwanis Children’s Fund
P.O. Box 6457—Dept. 286
Indianapolis, IN 46206
There was sad news in the world of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund recently. Past Children’s Fund President Ann Wilkins passed away at the end of June. She and I met when we were roommates at the International Convention in Tokyo. My thanks to Jane Erickson for suggesting to each of us that we share a room. We were both there to campaign for Jane as International vice president. Ann and I clicked right from the start. She was an outstanding Kiwanian and all-around nice person. Many people we saw thought we had been friends for a long time, not realizing we had just met. Due to the pandemic, we haven’t seen each other since the convention in Orlando. Her leadership and commitment to the Children’s Fund and all of Kiwanis will be missed.
The grant I would like to share with you this month is from the Kiwanis Club of Woodbury, New Jersey. They developed a partnership with the local school district to provide a playground for the growing preschool population. The Children’s Fund grant will enable them to create outdoor play areas where preschoolers can increase their physical and social skills. They will also be able to enhance creativity, become problem-solvers, as well as work on patience, cooperation, and so much more. Great project! If your club as a project that could use extra financing, please contact me. I will be happy to send you a digital copy of the brochure detailing how to apply for a Children’s Fund Grant.
Don’t forget to save your “K” Dollars! They are the one-dollar bills that have a K on them and at the beginning of the serial number.
Thanks for reading!
