Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP) Student Presentations

Last month, CDI welcomed 30 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students from across the country to conduct novel research on-site with MGH faculty preceptors. Join us for the student final presentations on July 27th and 28th on-site at Mass General in Simches 3110, and in supporting and learning from our biggest SRTP class yet. And, in so doing, supporting the advancement of a more diverse and equitable future for the world of academic medicine and medical research.

Dr. Castro, MD, MMSc is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Program at the MGH Cancer Center.


As CDI Faculty Co-Director for Research, Dr. Castro,  alongside Professor Julie Price, works to further propel the investigative trajectories of UiM trainees and faculty.

Interim Support Funding (ISF)

The Mass General Hospital Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) is now accepting applications for Interim Support Funding (ISF). This is open to Principal Investigators during a lapse or delay in their research funding from the NIH or another Federal agency (e.g., the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense). Investigators must have applied for independent, long-term support (R01, R21, U01 and P01). The intent of the program is to rescue strong scientific programs that are in need of bridge funding in order to sustain their research. Please click here for details. Committee Board

The CDI works closely with its Resident and Fellow Committee (RFC), an inter-departmental forum for MGH trainees who are underrepresented in medicine (UiM). The RFC is led by residents and fellows who are elected by their peers and plays a crucial role in the professional and personal development of UiM residents and fellows at Mass General. This committee assists with residency recruitment offers opportunities to socialize and network among peers, enhance career development, and become involved in the larger Harvard and Boston communities. Ernesto Gonzalez Award Nominations Open Through August 2

In 2005, the Massachusetts General Hospital instituted an award for outstanding service to the Latino community and recognized Ernesto González, MD for his contributions to Latino patients and families at MGH and surrounding communities. This award, The Ernesto González Award for Outstanding Service to the Latino Community, will honor an MGH employee who has significantly contributed to improving the experience of Latino patients, families, visitors, and/or employees within MGH or community at large.

 

Eligibility: All MGH/MGPO employees are eligible to nominate or be nominated for this award. They must be a full or part-time employee in good standing within the MGH community. Mass General Brigham employees who directly support the MGH also will be considered. Self-nominations are accepted.

 

Nominees must meet at least one of the following selection criteria:

 

  • Commits to Latino initiatives beyond the duties and responsibilities associated with the employee’s job at MGH
  • Enhances the experience of Latino patients and their families
  • Fosters and/or establishes relationships with organizations and individuals to strengthen MGH’s commitment to the Latino community

Join us at noon on July 28th for this month's Front and Centered webinar as we feature MGH's Center for Community Health Improvement.

 

CCHI has been working to address the social and economic factors that lead to better health - housing, education, employment, food and nutrition, youth development, and more - for more than 25 years. Learn about the frontline work being done in Chelsea, Charlestown, and Revere from our community coalition directors.

Fellowship and Funding Opportunities

Apply for MGPO Health Policy Fellowship by 9/15: Attend an Open House 7/27 or 8/9

The David F. Torchiana, MD Fellowship in Health Policy and Management is now accepting applications for a 2-year fellowship, beginning summer 2023. Join the MGPO for an open house in the MGPO Commons, Bulfinch 370:

  • Open house dates: 7/27, 12-1 pm or 8/9, 4-5 pm
  • Meet staff and past fellows and learn more about the program
  • Enjoy food and collegial connection

The fellowship fosters the growth and development of early-career academic physicians who have completed their residency or clinical fellowships and provides an immersion experience and curriculum in health policy and management. Under guidance of Jason Wasfy, MD, and other fellowship faculty, fellows gain exposure and competency in many aspects of health care management, including:

  • Quality and safety
  • Performance measurement and improvement
  • Contracting
  • Hospital operations
  • Population health management
  • Payment systems
  • Other areas

Applicants should have career aspirations in health care management or policy and prior experience in leadership. To apply, click here. Applications received by 9/15 will receive priority review. Departments must be prepared to finalize a clinical appointment for accepted fellows within 2 weeks of an offer from the MGPO. Health Affairs Health Equity Fellowship for Trainees Application Cycle Opens on August 10

Health Affairs will be opening its 2023 Health Equity Fellowship for Trainees application cycle soon! The Fellowship is part of Health Affairs' national initiative to advance racial equity in health policy and health services scholarly publishing.

The MV3 Foundation—led by some of our Black HMS medical students leaders--is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is focused on investing in the personal and professional development of Black undergraduate students pursuing careers in health and/or biomedical science. The mission of the MV3 Foundation is to build and empower a community of Black undergraduate scholars across the US who will positively impact the future of health and biomedical sciences through our 3 Pillars: Education, Service, and Advocacy.

 

MV3 Foundation is looking for Black Health or Biomedical Science Professionals who can bring their expertise, experience, and passion to mentoring groups of Black scholars. Congratulations and Recognition

Margarita Alegria, PhD, chief of the MGH Disparities Research Unit and the MGH Mongan Institute, received the 2022 Inclusive Voices Award from the American Association for Public Opinion Research. Alegria was also named a 2022 Champion of Mental Health Equity by the New York University McSilver Institute.

Efren Flores, MD was nominated for and recently selected to serve on the advisory committee for the CMSS-NAM-WHO (Council of Medical Specialty Societies-National Academy of Medicine-World Health Organization) Collaboration: Phase 2: Identifying Credible Sources of Health Information in Social Media. The committee “will guide the development of a globally relevant, expanded set of principles applicable to potential sources of credible information.” With this initiative, the committee will “build upon the earlier work of NAM in phase 1, which produced a discussion paper entitled “Identifying Credible Sources of Health Information in Social Media: Principles and Attributes.”

Rachel Jimenez, MD, chair for Quality and Safety, Department of Radiation Oncology, received the 2022 Advanced Clinical Research Award for Diversity and Inclusion in Breast Cancer from Conquer Cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology Foundation. This award will help fund her project, “A randomized clinical trial to study the impact of emerging radiation techniques on cardiac injury in the treatment of women with breast cancer.”

Last month RFC board member, Lucy Ogbu-Nwobodo, MD, MS, MAS, received the Ed Messner Award for Resident Teaching (voted on by residents in the MGH/McLean Psychiatry Program) and the Paul Howard Award for respect for patients and their community (voted on by faculty in the MGH/McLean Psychiatry Program).


The MGH Disparities Solutions Center recently launched its Secondary Mentorship Program for Diverse Research Faculty, which will support four junior research faculty from historically under-represented groups through a dedicated secondary mentor in research. The program’s inaugural mentees are Jehan Alladina, MD, Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; Marisela E. Dy-Hollins, MD, Department of Neurology; Aderonke Bamgbose Pederson, MD, Department of Psychiatry; and Giselle Perez, PhD, Department of Psychiatry.
