Whether you are using a ladder, working home improvement projects, or dealing with snow and ice during the treacherous winter months, a slip, trip, or fall can cause severe injuries, a permanent disability, or even end in death.
Here are some simple precautions and tips to stay safe and prevent injuries.
AT-HOME TIPS
- Practice all ladder safety tips (see below)
- Keep the work area clear of hazards and immediately clean up spills
- Read all instructions and safety precautions on your equipment
- Don't wear loose clothing that can get caught in equipment
- Keep floors and surfaces clear of clutter
- Keep filing cabinets and desk drawers closed
- Keep electrical and phone cords out of traffic areas
- Wear sensible footwear
- Never stand on chairs, tables, or any surface with wheels
- Properly arrange furniture to create open pathways
- Maintain good lighting indoors and outdoor
| |
|
WINTER WEATHER TIPS
- Use special care when getting in and out of vehicles
- Try to park your vehicle in a clear area and watch where you step as you get in or out
- Avoid carrying items that reduce your ability to see the ground in front of you
- Scan the path six or more feet ahead of you for trip hazards
- Make sure your route ahead is clear of hazards such as rocks, clumps of snow, or a stray branch
- Walk slowly and take small steps to maintain your balance
- Wear footwear that has slip-resistant soles
- Plan ahead and give yourself sufficient time to get where you need to go.
- If you do happen to slip, try to avoid using your arms to break your fall.
- If you fall backward, tuck your chin into your chest to prevent hitting your head against the ground
- Watch out for black ice when walking
- Use your vehicle for support when entering and exiting
- When entering a building, be sure to wipe your feet
- Removing as much snow and water as possible from your shoes when entering a building. This will decrease your chance of slipping when walking around inside

SHADERS FEEDING SHADERS FOOD DRIVE COMPETITION WINNERS
And the winner is...Pre-Kindergarten at Howard Yocum Elementary School, also known as “The Best School in the Universe”. Once again, the Shaders Feeding Shaders Food Drive Competition was fierce, but the Pre-K pulled off the win during the last minutes of the event! Third grade was a close second - only 47 items behind. In this competition, the wins are endless.
The competition stocks the pantry at the Maple Shade Food Bank and the Pre-K won a pizza party courtesy of The Maple Shade Police Department. Those who fell a few items short still learned the importance of giving back to the community. Thank you to The Maple Shade School District for partnering with us for this great event!
The Pre-K Pizza Party was held on October 31st.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS
The Maple Shade Police Department was out celebrating Halloween all around town. On October 24th, officers spent the evening at the Fox Meadow Apartment Complex and had a spooky, good time. They even met some future police officers.
| |
On October 25th, members of the Maple Shade Police Department participated in Maple Shade Soccer Club's Annual Fall Festival. We certainly didn’t win the best decorated tent, but we did have a blast!
On October 26th, the Maple Shade Police Department participated in the parade down Main Street in Maple Shade and provided security for those in attendance. Another successful township event!
The Maple Shade Police Department enjoyed spending time with Maude Wilkins School's staff and students while providing traffic assistance at their traditional parade. K9 Ripley even dressed up for the occasion.

WATER UPDATE
Fall hydrant flushing is complete. The Spring hydrant flushing is scheduled for April 2025. Notice will be given in March when scheduling occurs.
Water System Improvements on County Ave, between Fellowship and Maple, are complete. Final asphalt restoration to be completed in November, following drainage improvements. Please use caution around the area during those times.
SERVICE LINE UPDATE
Per NJDEP regulations, all water systems must identify the water service lines that supply water to residential and commercial buildings. In 2022, the Township sent out 2 rounds of letters asking those with unknown lines to contact the utility to make an appointment. At that time the unknown lines total was over 500. Our inventory currently stands at 168.
We need your help to complete the inventory. If you receive a letter in November, please contact the utility to set up an appointment. The appointment takes just a few minutes, otherwise, an excavation may be required to determine the service line material. The current inventory can be viewed HERE.
KEEPING YOU INFORMED

SUSTAINABLE MAPLE SHADE RECEIVED THE DEP RECYCLING AWARD
On October 23, 2024, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection presented Sustainable Maple Shade with the DEP Recycling Award in the leadership category. Sustainable Maple Shade was recognized for both their outstanding achievement in educational outreach and the multiple recycling initiatives spearheaded by the group.
These initiatives include the NexTrex plastic recycling program that has kept over 1,000lbs of plastic out of the municipal waste load. Sustainable Maple Shade member, Peg Weber, attended the symposium in Neptune, NJ and accepted the award on Sustainable Maple Shade's behalf.

SUSTAINABLE MAPLE SHADE'S AWARD-WINNING RECYCLING INITIATIVES HAVE A NEW HOME IN THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING LOBBY
Sustainable Maple Shade would like to thank the Township of Maple Shade for their support of their award winning recycling initiatives by installing the new recycling station in the Municipal Lobby. Located next to the elevators, the new recycling center, is your one stop drop location for recyclable materials that cannot be recycled by the Burlington County recycling program, but can be recycled through Sustainable Maple Shade's programs.
These materials include plastic that is accepted by the NexTrex Program and deflated balloons, as well as seasonal recycling projects like Halloween costumes and broken holiday lights. Sustainable Maple Shade looks forward to further collaborations with the Township to increase awareness around alternative recycling programs and decrease our municipal waste load. Check out the flyers below for more information on Sustainable Maple Shade's recycling initiatives.
