Highlights From the Field
Resident workshops equip residents
to nurture young trees
Canopy hosted its first Resident Tree Care Workshop on Saturday, September 18. Palo Alto residents, Canopy Community Forestry School students, and Canopy Teen Urban Foresters joined Community Forestry Field Technician Mel Sutton at Mitchell Park for a guided tour of young trees in the park. Mel taught attendees how to assess a young tree's health and how to properly stake, mulch, weed, and water young trees. Mel also demonstrated how to identify and treat common issues such as aphids, sooty mold, and fire blight. Following the guided walk, the group visited a few trees in the neighborhood next to the Park to check stakes, fix mulching issues, and do light pruning.

A pilot program for Canopy, the workshops aim to prepare residents who have received Canopy trees to help their new trees thrive. Canopy also helps care for each newly planted tree directly for the first three years. The next workshop will take place in November in East Palo Alto.
First tree planting of the season:
East Palo Alto Charter School
“We had a great group of enthusiastic volunteers, including school parents and students, helping us plant 12 trees!” reports Arlene Nuñez GarcĂa, Canopy's community forestry coordinator, of the September 25 tree planting at East Palo Alto Charter School. Above, a group celebrates their successful planting after having to fill in the cutout with two wheelbarrows of soil to bring it to grade. EPACS student Sasha is beaming with pride! Below, Kammy Lo (far left), a Canopy board member and planter leader, shows her group how to work a tree's root ball before planting. Miranda, another EPACS student, named her tree “MT,” for "Miranda's Tree," and placed her initials on the tree tag.

Sharing their stories: Teen art exhibit opens Nov. 4
Two recent art and wellness workshops helped Canopy's Teen Urban Foresters regain a sense of connection they had lost during the pandemic. The public gets a chance to see art that the teens created during the workshops, about environmental justice and other concerns, beginning November 4 at Taqueria La Cazuela in East Palo Alto.
Artist update: Homage to 'incredibly ancient beings'
Patricia Larenas, Canopy’s artist-in-residence, has completed two of her planned four portraits of Palo Alto great oaks. The work is giving her all new reverence for the enormous trees, “beings that have lived among us, with so much going on around them, for a couple centuries.”
