Community Project

For the 8th grade Community Project this year, we are combining the leadership and advocacy work from Keystone Design 8 with the Community Project (CP). The Community Project is a capstone as part of the IB MYP for all 8th graders. Students work in groups to take action to address a need in their community, and are guided by adults in the building. Keystone teachers will monitor progress on individual tasks/reflections, and group work will take place during some Advisory days. Students will work on the Community Project over the course of March and April.

Details to know:

  • The asynchronous lesson for Keystone this week was an informational video about Community Project, and students should have started brainstorming. Click here to see the video.
  • Students will choose their groups on Wednesday, March 1 during Advisory time. They can work alone, with a partner, or in a group of three. Students can partner with any 8th grader. We will use some Advisory days for their group meetings, and Keystone classes to complete individual work.
  • Dr. Anton Treuer is working with 8th graders on Feb 7 and March 17. The first session was on identity, and next will be on purposeful action. These experiences will hopefully guide students to make meaningful choices for their CP action.
  • Students will have digital notebook reflections and due dates throughout the project.
  • Goal due March 10
  • Action Proposal due March 24
  • Action Complete due April 11
  • Final Presentation to 6th and 7th graders on April 26
  •
  • There will be an added PowerSchool course for Community Project. After presentations, students will be graded on 4 criteria: Investigating, Planning, Taking Action, and Reflecting.

Cleaning up the Confusion on Standardized Tests

St. Louis Park Middle School and High School have a much higher opt-out rate than neighboring districts. When students opt out of testing, they are marked as “not proficient” by the state, significantly lowering apparent proficiency levels. It impacts everything from students’ college-ready scores and understanding of academic progress to school enrollment and public perception.

We encourage SLP families to continue their learning and understanding about standardized tests before deciding to opt out.
