A Letter From Our Pastor ~ Fr. Paulson |
|
Dear Friends,
On August 6, Mr. Joe Silveira, our school principal, successfully defended his doctoral thesis and secured a doctoral degree in Education. I was honored to be part of the dissertation committee together with two professors from the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, Gwynedd Mercy University, Pennsylvania. On behalf of our church and school community, I would like to congratulate Mr. Joe Silveira on the successful completion of his research and defense.
Mr. Silveira’s thesis centered on School Leadership, and studied “Leadership perceptions of experienced catholic elementary school principals about the factors that sustain them.” The first research question explored the leadership strategies employed by experienced elementary catholic principals to sustain them. His study reported that the sustenance of the leadership is one that is centered on the motivation from the changes, development, and successes of past and present students, and by working as one Catholic community with the same faith, values and goals. Openness to change and innovation as well as building relationships with the school’s stake holders were described as crucial to motivation.
The second research question looked into effective techniques in reducing and eliminating stress and burnout. Data analysis pointed to the leader’s ability to balance personal and professional commitments. Another vital strategy was by networking and connecting with peers and community members. Personally, I found his research very inspiring and helpful for me as a pastor as our leadership roles are so similar in so many ways. Once again, congratulations to Dr. Joe Silveira, a successful and inspiring leader in the diocese of Oakland.
Two years ago, we completed our CTK rectory renovation with your generous donations. With the help of our parishioners, an architect and contractor, we were able to do an awesome job of design and repair. I am happy to report that the rectory is full with 4 retired priests and 2 (very) active priests. Fr. Gerry Moran joined us in mid-July after his distinguished ministry from Danville. Fr. Tom Joseph came to live with us a few weeks earlier. For two years we have been praying for his recovery from cancer of the brain. We are happy to provide a loving community and brotherly support as he continues to live with growing tumors in his brain. Fr. Joseph, the pastor of St. Anne will be with us for a month after his retirement, and then he will transition to India in September. We are grateful for our wonderful home.

I would like to introduce to you our new Youth Minister, Mike Aliscad. Nelson Gonzalez will continue to minister as a volunteer. As a high school junior Mike taught 5th grade catechism on Yokosuka Naval Base Japan. It was to be for just a year, but God had other plans. This started a 20 - plus year journey; guiding youth to build a relationship with Jesus. Most recently he spent 2 years as Youth Minister and Confirmation Catechist with St. Michael Catholic Community on Travis Air Force Base. Prior to that, he served 6 years as Youth Minister at Holy Spirit in Fairfield CA. We welcome Mike to St. Stephen and CTK.
This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. Mary has been our rock and refuge during this pandemic and we are so blessed and protected through her intercession. “Mary, who is a human creature, one of us, reaches eternity in body and soul”, said Pope Francis. This is why we invoke her as the “Gate of Heaven." “There she awaits us, just as a mother waits for her children to come home." The Pope said we are like pilgrims on our way home to Heaven. Seeing that “in paradise, together with Christ, the New Adam, there is also her, Mary, the new Eve, gives us comfort and hope in our pilgrimage down here." Happy Feast.

Update on Church Projectors |
|
As you may know, we’ve been doing a lot of technology upgrades to the church to continue our ability to offer Livestream for services and other events. While the camera systems are complete, part of that effort has been a long overdue upgrade to our video & slide projectors to more modern units offering higher resolution and a brighter overall image utilizing the latest in laser light (no bulbs to replace ever again!). Beyond just the increase in picture quality, this upgrade will also allow for some creative integration of the cameras in the church to display for key events like Graduation, Christmas Concerts, Adult Education and other events! Regrettably, one of the many side effects of Covid is that many areas of the technology industry and supply have been severely affected by microchip and other parts & labor shortages and unfortunately the projectors we ordered are still on backorder after several months of waiting. Please bear with us as we look into alternative suppliers while also keeping our place in line with our existing order in hopes that the new projectors will ship sooner than later! |

DRESS A CHILD AROUND THE WORLD
Sewing Sessions resume on Sept. 1st and continue every 1st and 3rd Wednesdays 9:00 am ‘til 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. Our dresses and shorts are donated to the poor, disadvantaged, and children affected by disasters in the U.S. and around the world. If you’re looking for a worthwhile endeavor and have a few hours to do something for others, please join us. If you're not a sewer, join us anyway and we’ll put you to work in other ways. CYO Basketball Registration Now Open
Grades 3 to 8 - Boys and Girls
We are excited to announce that we are currently accepting registration for the 21/22 winter basketball season. The Oakland diocese has announced that they will be offering a basketball winter season. Christ the King basketball is excited to bring 3rd grade to 8th grade boys and girls back to the hardwood this season. Please sign up by the registration deadlines and we will communicate as soon as possible with further information. CYO is set to start sometime in the month of September and we will update as we know further details. Always check our website for further information. We are excited for our children to return to play and look forward to seeing you soon.
