We’re Gathering Supplies

for Flood Survivors

We continue to gather necessities for people affected by flooding in Eastern Kentucky, and we hope to make a second delivery of supplies next week. If you feel moved to donate to this cause, please see the lists below.

We need:

  • Large cases of bottled water (packs of 24 or more)
  • Large packs of diapers (various sizes)
  • Large packets of baby wipes
  • Camping stoves
  • Solar-powered camping showers

We encourage you also to assemble buckets of cleaning supplies. Please pack the following supplies in the bucket and seal them in with the lid.

  • 5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
  • 5 scouring pads
  • 7 sponges, assorted sizes
  • 1 scrub brush
  • 5 dust masks
  • 50 clothespins
  • Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.
  • 1 box dry laundry detergent, 50–78 oz.
  • 1 pair work gloves
  • 2 pair latex gloves (like Playtex)
  • 1 plastic bottle concentrated household liquid cleaner (like Lysol), 12 oz.
  • 1 plastic bottle liquid disinfectant dish soap (like Dawn), 25 oz.
  • 1 pkg. cleaning towels (18 reusable, like Easy Wipes)
  • 24-count roll heavy-duty trash bags (33–45 gallon)

We will make more trips to affected areas, so please continue to bring your donations to the church. Ring the office, and we will show you where to drop them off. If you have questions or want to help collect, move, and deliver these supplies, please call Justin Miller at 423-764-7176 or email him.

If you would like to donate money, please write a check to FPC Bristol and designate “Minister’s Discretionary Fund – Flood” in the memo. You can also give online. All proceeds will go to buy supplies and provide financial assistance to those affected.

Indian Mission Report and Free Fellowship Supper Next Wednesday

Our Wednesday night programming has resumed with supper in the fellowship hall at 5:30, followed by activities for children, teens, and adults. For the Adult Enrichment program, the Montana Indian Ministries team will report on their work at the Belknap Reservation. There will be no cost for supper on August 24 and 31, thanks to a benefactor who has underwritten the cost to encourage people to come see what Wednesday nights are all about. We look forward to seeing you!

Parents’ Night Out August 26

Children’s Ministries will host a Parents’ Night Out next Friday, August 26, from 6:00 to 8:30. This event for newborns through sixth graders will be held in the Education Wing. Please let Lilly Osborne know the number and ages of the children you will bring, so that she can provide dinner and materials for all of them. Email Lilly, call or text her at 423-383-5476, or sign up on the Children’s Ministries Facebook page.

Bud Branscomb's Adult Bible Study Begins Sunday

Come by room 167 (across from the Boy Scout Hall) this Sunday, August 21, for Rev. Dr. Bud Branscomb’s inductive study of the Gospel of John. Profit from Bud’s wealth of teaching and pastoral experience! The class will meet for eight to ten weeks.

New Youth Ensemble

Are you a 3rd–8th grader who loves to lift your voice up in praise and worship? We are looking for excited and enthusiastic singers to be founding members of our new music ensembleour Jubilation Youth Choir! No singing or music-reading experience is required. All you need is a desire to gain music literacy skills and lead worship through song. For this fall, participation is only a four-week commitment. Practices will be on Wednesdays from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. beginning August 31, and they will continue through September 21. We will perform for the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services Sunday, September 25. Please reach out to Melissa Galliher. She can answer all your questions.

More Children’s Music News

Melissa Galliher, Children’s Music Minister, has announced an addition to the children’s performance schedule for fall. The children’s ensembles, the Praise Band, and the Sanctuary Choir will perform during the Bristol Area Ministerial Association harvest service Sunday, September 18, 4:00–5:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall. As reported last week, Children’s Bells will perform in both services Sunday, August 28, and the Jubilation Youth Choir (3rd–8th graders) will sing Sunday, September 25.

Please Help with Sharing Christ

We are looking for folks to help us serve our downtown neighbors at the Sharing Christ Mission on Saturday, September 3. If you are available to assist in preparing or serving dinner, or if you can donate food, please email Becca Tate or send her a text (404-790-1223).

In addition to donations of food and bottled water, we need a team to serve at the mission that evening and folks to prepare bag lunches ahead of time (this is a good family project). Our supper menu will be ziti casserole made from our recipe, green beans, applesauce, rolls, and Little Debbie oatmeal creme cookies. The lunches will be peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bananas, and Little Debbie fudge rounds.

Please help out in any way you can. This is a wonderful way to meet another part of our community!

Organist's Footnotes

Sunday’s prelude and postlude are both based on the day’s hymns.

Dr. Albert L. Travis (b. 1940) is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Organ at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. His “Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart” (our postlude) is a classic toccata setting guaranteed to give the organist a good workout! It is as fun to play as it is to listen to. Travis served on the faculty of the School of Church Music from 1977 to 2008 and has been organist of Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth since 1978. Currently serving as Organist and Director of the Broadway Series, Travis plays the Rildia Bee O’Bryan Cliburn organ. The Casavant organ has 191 ranks, the largest installation by the Canadian organ company.

Travis has degrees from Oklahoma Baptist University, Syracuse University, and the University of Michigan. As a recipient of a German Government Grant, he studied with Helmut Walcha in Frankfurt. Other notable teachers include Virginia Reese, Arthur Poister, Marilyn Mason, Catharine Crozier, Gerre Hancock, Paul Manz, Russell Saunders, and Peter Planyavsky. A member of ASCAP, Travis has organ and choral publications with MorningStar Music Publishers, Hope Publishing, Augsburg, and Alfred. With the Fort Worth Symphony, he recorded the Jongen Symphonie Concertante and the Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (“Organ”) on compact disc. He can be heard on three other CDs of hymn festivals recorded at Broadway Baptist. Travis maintains an active schedule as hymn festival leader, improvisation workshop clinician, arranger, and composer.

Alan Viner (b. 1951) has created a gentle setting of the Welsh tune cwm rhondda (our prelude), which honors the Rhondda Valley in Glamorganshire. Viner was Director of Music at the Priory Grammar School, Shrewsbury, in the county of Shropshire, and then the Wakeman School, Shrewsbury. In 1989 he left the state education system and is now heavily committed to composing and private teaching.
