Juneteenth Celebration in Coventry Village
On Sunday, June 19, Coventry Village and Safer Heights held their 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration to support black-owned businesses and artists and honor the contributions of the black community in Cleveland Heights. Mayor Seren visited the event and gave a brief speech.

The celebration featured a vendor market for black-owned businesses, live performances, a free movie at the Coventry PEACE park, live art and gallery experiences featuring local black artists, face painting, a magic show, crafts and creative workshops, and the Coventry Village Merchant's Sidewalks Sale.
Juneteenth celebrates and commemorates the news of the end of American slavery reaching the last enslaved Americans of African decent in June 1865. It is a uniquely American holiday that has been celebrated for over 150 years but wasn't declared a Federal holiday until June 2021. Juneteenth was declared a Cleveland Heights holiday in March 2022.

On Friday, June 17, Mayor Seren raised the African-American Flag at City Hall to honor and reflect on Juneteenth.
Cleveland Heights Enacts Three New Policies to Make the City More Equitable and Inclusive
At their regular meeting on Tuesday, June 21, Cleveland Heights City Council fulfilled a promise made earlier in the month by passing three substantive policy changes making the City of Cleveland Heights more inclusive and equitable for members of the community who are LGBTQIA+.

  • ORDINANCE 75-2022, co-sponsored by Councilor Josie Moore, to update the City of Cleveland Heights' parental and family leave policy to make it gender-neutral and ensure the parental and family leave benefit is available to employees who are LGBTQ+.

  • ORDINANCE 79-2022, co-sponsored by Councilman Anthony Mattox, Jr., banning conversion therapy in Cleveland Heights.

  • ORDINANCE 77-2022, mandating the inclusion of expansive anti-discrimination language in every City contract and requiring companies entering into contracts with the City or benefiting from public incentives to affirm they will not discriminate on the basis of gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation.

Cleveland Heights City Council passed all three proposals unanimously, and following the City Council meeting, Mayor Kahlil Seren signed them into law.

"Here in Cleveland Heights, we turn our values into action," Mayor Seren said. "We fly the Progress Pride Flag as a symbol of our support, but these policies create real change behind the symbolism. I am grateful to Councilor Josie Moore and Councilman Anthony Mattox Jr. for joining me as sponsors of inclusive parental leave and protections against conversion therapy in Cleveland Heights."
