Yogic Living Newsletter

August 2022 - Volume 2

“Matter in its subtlest form is prana, a vital energy which is inseparable from consciousness.” - The Dalai Lama -

Throughout history, yogis have discovered the power of breathing to enhance physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. In this week’s Yogic Living we invite you to journey into Pranayama: The Power of the Breath.

The yogic art of breathing—pranayama—is one of the classical limbs of yogaB.K.S. Iyengar describes pranayama as a bridge, which helps the student of yoga “cross from the realm of purely physical development to that of the spirit.”

Simply put, breath is life. Breathwork reveals the intimacy of our interconnection and dissolves the barriers that seem to separate us from our surroundings. On a physical level, studies reveal that by regulating the breath, it is possible to restore balance to stress response systems, calm an agitated mind, relieve symptoms of anxiety, improve overall health and endurance, and enhance relationships. Basic Breath Series

This set gives you a quick lift in energy, increased clarity, and a sense of balance. If you do the minimum times for each exercise, it only takes 22-25 minutes to completely reset yourself. It is an excellent set for beginners. You learn the relationship to the breath and you observe the differences in emotion and thinking that each type of breathing creates. This kriya is excellent to practice as a preparation for a more strenuous Kundalini Yoga set.

Sitali Pranayama

Sitali Pranayam is a cooling breath that involves inhaling through the curl of the tongue. We breathe as if “drinking” in moisture-rich air, which cools us down – physically and emotionally.

This practice is said to cool the body, add moisture to the system, and in the wisdom of Ayurveda, soothe a pitta imbalance. This practice also reduces fatigue, bad breath, fevers, and high blood pressure.
