Thank You!

Let me begin by saying a huge thank you to the Woodlawn community for the extremely warm welcome I have received! These first three weeks have been busy, but wonderful. A special thank you needs to be made to the Woodlawn team. Cheri, Joan, Kelly, Kevin, Lesley, Nick, and Zach have all been incredibly helpful and patient as I have eased my way into the position. Additionally, the Board of Trustees have provided tremendous support these first few weeks and I am grateful for their help.

As I continue to familiarize myself with the Woodlawn and Ellsworth communities, I look forward to meeting everyone who holds a connection to the site. If you are a long-time museum visitor, a dog walker, croquet player, or just attending an event, I want to understand how you engage with Woodlawn and what else we can be doing to support our guests. I have just begun to scratch the surface of our campus. It has become clear that there will always be more I can explore across Woodlawn! The opportunity for a new experience on each visit keeps Woodlawn a great place for a return visit. The Black House Museum will offer a new fascinating detail on every visit, and the grounds are always changing through the seasons.

With the completion of the Barn, we are excited for the next phase of Woodlawn’s history. We have already hosted a variety of programming and events and look forward to growing our impact through education and community support. If you are interested in having an event at the Barn, please visit our website for more details. I have the great privilege of taking on the momentum that has been created over the last few years and am excited to grow the museum’s programmatic offerings as well its use as a community asset. My short time here has already included a firefly talk, MainBiz event, The House at Lobster Cove book club, four performances of One Blue Tarp, teas, croquet lessons, many museum tours, and more! August has even more to offer with a croquet tournament, continuing museum tours, history lectures, programs about dragonflies, astronomy, managing forests, and more.

I am so excited for the future of Woodlawn, and the opportunity to be a part of it, and this community. Thank you for welcoming me in and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together.

With gratitude,

Evan Moats

Executive Director

Mushrooms

Shy citizens of a distant kingdom, mushrooms surprise and delight us with their diversity and often bizarre morphology. Though secretive and mostly out of view, the world of mushrooms and other fungi is richly inhabited by organisms that are essential to the well-being and balance of the world. Through decomposition and connectivity, mushrooms are the ultimate recyclers in the biosphere.

On our walk on the Woodlawn trails, we will see diverse fall mushrooms and cover the basics of mushroom identification, but also, we will observe the often-overlooked signs of significant activities of mushrooms and other fungi and how they contribute to the ecology of the Maine forest.

Space is limited. All ages welcome. Rain or shine.
