From the Assistant Director
Greetings Madrone Trail Community,
Mr. Bissey is officially on paternity leave starting this week, although still no sign of the baby! I guess he wants to be an October birthday like his father. I will let the community know when he does finally make his appearance.
Also, Dawn Widen, our Office Manager, is unfortunately leaving our school. She is moving back to Colorado. She was fabulous while she was here and will be missed. This means we are looking for another Office Manager. If you know of anyone interested, please have them check out our website here for the job listing. This means it's just Sherrie and me holding down the fort, so please be patient if things take longer than usual to attend to. So far so good though.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
~Cori Royer
Assistant Director/Games Teacher

Parking Lot Update
Our parking lot is getting a makeover! This evening it will be cleaned and repaved. On Monday, the lines will be repainted. This means that on Monday there will be no markings in the parking lot! We will have the rope and cones out there, as well as some staff to help direct, but we will have to do our best with no lines. Please continue to cross through the parking lot by the main gate (imagining where the rainbow crosswalk was) or on the far end of the temporary fencing.

Looking Towards Halloween
We will be celebrating Halloween at school on Thursday, October 28 (Friday, October 29 is a Grades Day so there is no school.) At Madrone Trail this means we will have a parade of costumes after lunch and then individual class celebrations afterwards. Please do not send your child in their costume to school, or apply elaborate makeup they will have to wear all day as it is very distracting for the first part of the day.
As you look to purchase or make your child's Halloween costume this year please observe our school guidelines surrounding the Halloween costumes that they wear at school:
- Bring your costume to change into before parade. Parade will be at 1:30 pm.
- Homemade costumes are encouraged.
- Costumes must follow the school dress code.
- Keep face paint, make-up, and hair simple (you’re going to be applying it all at school.)
- You must be able to sit, walk, hear, and see with your costume on (no full face masks)
- No costumes that are gory/scary.
- No prop weapons.

Lost and Found
We are starting to acquire quite a collection of Lost & Found items at school. Take a look and see if you recognize anything! Some of these things are from last school year. We will be donating all unclaimed clothing in a few weeks.

Pizza Wednesdays are Back!
The 8th grade class started selling pizza on Wednesdays once again. Order your pizza in the morning between 8:00-8:30 am in the breezeway by 5th grade. Choose between cheese or pepperoni, $2 a slice. You can also prepay for several weeks in a row by sending in a check made out to MTPCS. They will deduct your weekly order from there. If you do prepay for pizza, ensure your child checks in with the pizza table each Wednesday. Note: Pizza Wednesday is for 1st-8th grade only, no Kindergartners.

Michaelmas
We had a very sweet Michaelmas celebration today after lunch. We had to alter a few things due to covid protocols, but overall it was so great to gather together as a whole school for the first time this year. The celebration started out with Ms. Jackson telling the story of St. George and the Dragon. The sixth grade class played the dragon (special shout out to sixth grader Isaac Richardson for hand-making the dragon's head) and second grader Hadley Hague played St. George, who tamed the dragon. We then had a song by the second grade class, a performance from the Dance team, and a song from the 6th-8th grade choir.

Meet Krista Peterson-
New Board Member
Krista is excited to return to Madrone Trail after four years of being gone. Hew daughter, a senior at South Medford, was a student at Madrone Trail from first through seventh grade. Krista was on the Madrone Trail Board back then and helped with auctions and took part in many volunteer opportunities.
She is looking forward to her next step with Madrone Trail by getting to work with the other board members to keep improving the school for all the children now and the ones coming up in the future!

Meet Kelly Stofflet-
New Board Member
Kelly was born and raised here in Southern Oregon. She graduated from Crater High School in 1998 and then moved out of the area. In 2006, she decided to come back home. She had spent time working and seeing life outside of a small town, but realized her heart was here. She ended up marrying a friend from high school that she had reunited with after her return home. They have 3 amazing kids, 2 boys and little girl who passed away. After Frankie passed, she realized she needed to do something more in her life. She ended up volunteering at Asante and in 2018 was awarded the Volunteer of the Year. She was then offered a job working with the volunteers, which is where she currently works.
Kelly and her husband also have their own construction business. She became a general contractor so her husband could focus on the work while she handled the logistics. In their "free time" they like to go camping and adventure around the valley. Their boys love horses and anything that has to do with farm animals.
When their oldest was getting to be school age they started looking at different schools and types of education. They loved how the Waldorf curriculum teaches the whole child. Their son has thrived in school so far and truly loves going to Madrone Trail every day. She hopes that as a board member, she can bring another perspective to things as well as learn more from the teams and committees that make Madrone Trail so amazing.

The Importance of Warmth
Now that the weather is starting to turn, we ask that during these cold months to come that children are sent to school with adequate layers to protect them from all the types of weather we see in the Rogue Valley. We are outside for recess and games class rain or shine. We often hear children say "but I'm not cold" when asked to wear long sleeves and jackets at recess. Also, shorts are not appropriate in below freezing weather. Please help us out and insist your child wear warm layers, even if they disagree. Thanks!
The article below was written by Jessica Porto, from the Waldorf School of Bend's website:
During early childhood, children grow faster than at any other time in their lives. Parents often feel as though they need to buy the next size of clothes and shoes every few months! During this time, a child's body not only grows bigger and stronger, but their organs are fine tuning their development and functioning. The same kinds of forces which make this growth and development possible are also the ones children need to keep their body's temperature at homeostasis. Young children also lose heat faster than adults, especially through the tops of their heads, and can become chilled quickly if they are not wearing enough clothing and a hat during the colder months. When children are not dressed adequately, the forces for growing and learning are compromised and instead are used to keep them warm. Young children often cannot tell whether they are too cold or too hot, and need loving adults to ensure their body temperature is at a healthy level. Wearing layers of breathable natural fiber clothing inside and waterproof, warm gear for outside play is the best way for a child to maintain their warmth.
