Resident Spotlight - Meet Bob Bruce
“There is a sense of community. The things that the people here are interested in and have ownership in truly help make this a real community. There is a commitment to caring about each other; it’s a unique place.”

Bruce and his now-deceased wife Judy (né Judy Garland!) moved to White Horse Village after living in Wallingford for more than thirty years. Bob had retired as President of Widener University, and Judy was beginning to have challenges with rheumatoid arthritis, so after a short search, they decided White Horse Village was the perfect place to call their new home.

“The campus and facilities appealed; physically, it is an absolutely wonderful place. It is open, not a high rise where you have to take an elevator,” explains Bruce. “The people are very bright, very interesting, and very diverse in interests. The residents here don‘t take themselves too seriously, even though there are a lot of very accomplished people here.”

The Bruces picked a garden cottage that was in the process of being combined into a double unit. With his wife’s health in mind, they wanted to be within walking distance of everything, and the garden unit met that need. After finalizing desired modifications for their new home, the couple packed their possessions into a storage unit and headed for their vacation home in Maine during construction.
Resident Tea Party
Residents donned their hats and white gloves for a traditional tea party in December.

Partygoers were treated to live music and a tasty variety of tea sandwiches, but not a sighting of Alice or the Mad Hatter. Maybe next time!
Music to Our Ears
The White Horse Village Music Studio has officially opened its doors and music-loving residents now have a welcoming place to gather, practice, and perform.

The new studio is complete with acoustic panels, courtesy of a generous financial contribution from the Endowment Fund. Thank you to resident Ray Orzechowski for inspiring this excellent addition to our community! Let the music play!
"Village Neighbors" Make an Impact
Among our many committees, The Village Neighbors, co-chaired by Perry Durkin and Carol Henn, makes a significant impact on our new residents as well as residents who have enjoyed living in the community for some time. The mission of the committee is for members to welcome new fellow neighbors to White Horse Village and foster opportunities for the new friends to socially connect within the community, grow community spirit and social relations, and help generate a sense of belonging to a "community of people who care.” The feedback has been outstanding!
Compost Today, Gardens Tomorrow!
As part of the White Horse Village sustainability effort, three compost bins have been created for residents to use for their organic refuse. The resulting rich and healthy compost will be used by residents for their gardens. Pictured is resident Bill Moore contributing his weekly compostables.

Master Plan Update
In December, the master planning team presented to the Board of Directors the process to date, completing the Schematic Design. Working with our landscape architect and engineers and our other partners, we now know where new buildings will be built and what the shell of all renovations will look like.

While the Schematic Design phase includes about 95% of the Master Plan, other areas have also been worked on and will continue into 2022. Working with our Resident Decorating Committee, new furniture, décor, and artwork has been ordered for the Clubhouse. We will also renovate two bathrooms in the Clubhouse. In February, we will hold a meeting with Belmont residents and share the landscape architect’s rendering of the new entranceway scheduled to be completed in 2022. The Garden Cottage exterior facelift is underway, as pictured here.

Now that the Schematic Design phase is complete, we will move
into Design Development. This phase will take approximately 4-5 months, during which we will get “inside” the new buildings and renovated spaces
and plan for interior spaces, the layout of wiring, plumbing, etc.

We will continue to keep you updated as the plan moves forward.
