Sea King Sunday Update

Dear Sea King Families,

Welcome to another busy, fun-filled week at PVHS! Our Science National Honors Society is hosting its first annual Earth Week celebration. This group has planned events each day to remind our Sea Kings about the importance of caring for our planet and supporting the environment in a variety of different ways. I am excited about this new week of events on our campus and encourage our Sea Kings to check out the event calendar below to get involved in this week!

Throughout this school year, the PVHS faculty and staff have been working on creating opportunities to foster a connected community and positive campus climate for our students. Research shows that students who are connected to their school community and have trusted adults and peers in their lives experience an increase in attendance, academic achievement, and educational motivation along with a decrease in discipline issues, chronic absenteeism, and negative peer interactions.

We have planned Sea King Seminars each semester to provide our students with information and strategies to support our goals of fostering a connected, positive campus environment. In the fall, we focused on positive behavioral expectations, leadership qualities, and creating a connection with our community. On Thursday, April 20th, we will deliver our Spring Sea King Seminar with a focus on school climate, positive and negative communication, social media, and kindness. Here is the link to our Spring Sea King seminar for your review. I want to thank our faculty, staff, and students for their investment in making PVHS a positive, caring, and kind campus for all students.

As always, I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with our incredible faculty, staff, students, and families. I hope you are having a relaxing Sunday and we will see you tomorrow!

Sincerely,

Dr. Trista Ramirez

Principal

🌎 Saturday, April 22nd is Earth Day! 🌎

Sea Kings, come out to Senior Park to partake in the Earth Week activities!

This past week, Mrs. Mindicino's English classes visited the library for an epic Breakout Box detective style game focused on Catcher in the Rye. This Breakout Box activity was a hands on learning experience designed to help students process the book they just finished reading while working on critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

In a Breakout Box Team competition, students are challenged to work with their team to be the first to open up the Breakup Box. This week's competition was competitive to say the least. Mrs. Mindicino's students analyzed evidence around the room, and applied their knowledge of the novel to solve clues that would eventually lead them to the code to open the box. Deciphering of the clues involved characterization skills, tracing the novel's themes and symbols, and the analysis of quotes. Students demonstrated truly impressive critical thinking skills and worked together to break open the box just before the time limit!

Last year, our fantastic librarian Ms. Brockman worked with Mrs. Mindicino’s English 2 Honors class to create this Breakout Box activity centered around The Catcher in the Rye. The game they created was incredibly challenging, and for the first time this past week, teams from Mrs. Mindicino’s current English 2H classes were able to break into the boxes within the time limit!

Well done English honors students and a huge acknowledgement to Mrs. Minidicino and Ms. Brockman for always finding such creative ways to make learning enjoyable and meaningful for our students!

State and AP Testing in April and May

The testing season is upon us! Our Juniors will be participating in state testing in Science, English, and Math and our AP students of all grades will participate in their subject area AP tests. The full testing schedule is below for your reference.

The State of California assesses schools by testing 11th-grade students in Science, English, and Math. A school's scores on these tests are a major factor in determining a school's ranking, which some colleges look at when they are considering students for admission. Thus, a strong performance on the SBAC ELA, Math, and CAST Tests is absolutely pivotal in keeping our California school ranking strong and giving our students the best chance with admission at the top colleges and universities.

Please join PVHS Staff in encouraging our students to prepare and do their best on these upcoming tests and to Go for the Green, the highest school ranking a school can achieve on the CAASPP tests.

For more information about the exam: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca

For information on opting out of state tests for 11th-grade students,

please contact our associate principal, Mr. Hill at hilld@pvpusd.net.

PRESENTED BY: STEPHANIE HANCOCK

(Formerly The College Aid Lady)

More than 20 years ago, Stephanie Hancock founded what would ultimately become College AidWorks. During this special presentation for PVHS, Stephanie will share:

  • How important it is for parents to understand the rules of a game they don’t even realize that they are playing.

  • How a family could be shooting itself in the foot if it does not figure out its aid eligibility before the college list gets finalized!

  • How to create a plan of action for getting through the entire process with the least disappointment possible and so that students receive full consideration for all aid available to them.

  •  A systematic way of determining where a student’s best chance of securing the available financial aid.
