Treaty Sleuthing: Spaces & Places

Treaty No. 1, August 3, 1871, was made at Lower Fort Garry (now a national historic site) between the Anishinaabe, Ininew, and the Crown. As the first post-Confederation Treaty, it set the precedent for the ensuing Numbered Treaties, Nos. 2 to 11.

TREATY ED in the classroom

What are our In-School Support Teachers up to?

IN-SCHOOL SUPPORT TEACHER: Renée McGurry

“In April and May of this year, I visited seven classrooms at Whyte Ridge School. Although scheduling these visits was a challenge, I managed to visit each of the grade 3 and 4 classes twice. Students were introduced to the 5 W’s of the Treaties: the Who, What, Where, When and Why. This was followed by hands-on activities, which allowed the students to get a closer look at the Treaty Medal and the Map of Manitoba. Students and staff were left with a good understanding of the Numbered Treaties and how they are a very important part of the history of this country."

Our In-School Support Team is here to help! We can support you in the classroom in-person or virtually. We offer:

  • Co-teaching Treaty Education lessons
  • Help in implementing Treaty Education Kit resources
  • Tips on incorporating local Treaty history
  • Support for PLCs and staff professional development
  • We also offer French language support for Immersion and French classes. Make sure to note that you would like our French-speaking In-School Support teacher when you book.
