Children of God
Last month I wrote about the people of God. We are God’s people. In Christ we are the new Israel. This is great, but in Jesus we are now children of God. Consider the differences between being a person of God and being a child of God.
Throughout the New Testament, we are called children of God.
“The true light, which gives light to
everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was
made through him, yet the world did
not know him. He came to his own, and
his own people did not receive him.
But to all who did receive him, who
believed in his name, he gave the right
to become children of God, who were
born, not of blood nor of the will of the
flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
Because of Jesus we go from being His own people to becoming children of God.
We believe, teach, and confess that the Bible is the inspired inerrant Word of God. Therefore, what Scripture says is truth. This is especially true when a truth is thematic in Scripture. It is comforting that one of the timeless truths we learn about God is that He loves us as a parent loves their precious child.
This is an amazing fact. We are the precious and loved children of God. No matter what we are told by the world. No matter how we feel. We are God’s beloved children. When we face hardships and difficulties, we are loved by God. When we feel abandoned and alone, we are God’s beloved children. When we face the final enemy, death, we are God’s beloved children. We are God’s children in this life and for eternity. This truth empowers us to live in hope, filled with an abiding peace. We can share the joy we have in Christ, even when we face hardship and loss. God declares us His beloved children. He demonstrates His great love for us in the cross of Christ.
There is always a future hope we have as children of God. When Christ appears, then we will see the true glory of the Father. As children of God, we are heirs of the eternal glory. We will stand before the Lamb, on His throne, and God will wipe the tears from our eyes. God is an awesome loving father. God richly and daily provides for all our needs.
God loves us even though we are petulant children. (petulant means: sulky, crabby, peevish) Not only are we petulant, but we are disobedient and disrespectful children. We do not honor our heavenly Father. We do not worship Him. Instead of giving thanks for all He has done for us, we take the gifts He gives for granted. We are rarely satisfied with the riches He provides. We are ungrateful, disobedient, whiney children who are loved by a gracious and merciful God. We deserve God’s wrath. God gives us His unconditional love.
God says, “Stay close to me and I will protect you”. We run away. We chase after false gods. God says, “Learn my ways,” and gives us the guidelines for living together with the other children. God says, “Let me help you,” and we stomp our feet, curl our lip, and say, “I don’t want your help!” We decide that God’s guidelines are too restrictive, so we ignore His teachings. We wander into trouble. We bring pain and strife into our life. Then we blame God for our troubles. We are too proud to admit we were wrong. Sometimes we even curse our Father God and run from His teachings.
And yet, God loves His children. He calls us by name. He confronts us with our disobedience and tells us to turn from our disobedience and embrace Him as the loving father. The truth revealed in first John, chapter three, gives us hope and comfort.
“And everyone who thus hopes in him
purifies himself as he is pure.” --1 John 3:3
You are God’s precious and loved child.
Reformation Sunday
We had such a positive response to the Scavenger Hunt we decided another family fun activity was needed!
Sunday, October 31st, after second service, we will celebrate Reformation with a Martin Luther inspired pumpkin carving competition and potluck!
What does that mean?
It means it's time to act like the Lutherans we are and nothing is more Lutheran than a good, old-fashioned, potluck! So, break out Nana's casserole recipe! Bring on the pies! And for the love of all things holy, someone bring some deviled eggs. I'm begging you.
What's a Martin Luther inspired pumpkin?
Well, instead of scary, Halloween-type, pumpkins, we are looking for something with a faith based message. What does being Lutheran mean to you? That sort of thing. Get creative!
Do I need to bring my own pumpkin?
Maybe. If you need a specific size to "realize your vision" then yes, bring your own. Otherwise, the Church will have pumpkins on hand. But DO bring your own tools! We don't have a lot of tools to choose from here.
Do I need to sign up?
YES, PLEASE! There will be a sign up sheet in the Narthex. Please sign up to participate in the pumpkin carving (so we have enough pumpkins) and let Becca know what you're bringing to the potluck. (That way we don't have half a dozen 7 layer salads and zero desserts. The Horror!)
Will there be prizes for the best pumpkins?
Working on it!
Do I have to carve a pumpkin?
No, of course not. But please stick around to cheer our "artists" on and see the finished products.
Becca, I've never been to a potluck and I'm not particularly creative but I still want to participate. Help!
It just so happens that the Church has a Pinterest page with lots of food and pumpkin related pins! Please check it out. You might just find what you're looking for.
A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y-! This is a family friendly way to introduce others to our church. The more, the merrier.

Online Giving App Changes!
The online giving app currently known as GivePlus will be ending September 30th* and will no longer function. There is a new app now available called Vanco Mobile Faith Engagement.
The Vanco Mobile app can be used going forward to change or update any online giving transactions. You can download this app for free at the Apple App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded simply open the app and search for our church name.
Any previous recurring donations are not affected and will continue. You will just need to use the new app to make any changes to that recurring donation.
Your previous online giving app registration/login will remain the same. The online website also remains the same.
*The deadline has been extended until January 31, 2022 but you are urged to change over to the new app as soon as possible.
Coats For Folks 2021
Coats for Folks is gearing up for another fantastic year. It is their goal to reach as many individuals and families in need as possible. The program has been highly successful since it launched in 2008. With the help of businesses and local citizens they have helped families from 11 different communities.
If you know anyone in need a warm coat this season please direct them to the Coats for Folks program.
This year's distribution will take place at the Louisburg United Methodist Church at 249 N. Metcalf.
Days of distribution will be October 25 & 26 from 3-7 PM.
