It's Called the "Wheel Pad"

The team at Linesync Architechure got together and put their words to action with this new and innovative design. This is a tiny home designed to attach to a home as a temporary to permanent living space for a wheelchair user. This design came about after a personal friend was injured and left a quadriplegic. Once Linesync realized how challenging the transition back home was, they created a perfect solution. The Wheel Pad is a 200 square foot tiny house with an entry ramp, wheelchair accessible bathroom and bedroom space. This is a quaint, bright, and cheery place to transition back home after a traumatic accident. To read their full article and view the video, visit  Treehugger.com

Meet Dalia

Dalia is a 19-year-old woman who was suddenly diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, a disease which affects the spinal cord causing paralysis. Shortly afterwards she was also diagnosed with scoliosis and has since found herself working through the struggles and changes of living with both diseases.
"It started on a Tuesday morning in September of 2013. I woke up with a fever and ended up staying home from school. On Wednesday I was feeling better but I wasn't quite right. I went to bed that night at 10 p.m. and woke up at 1 a.m. and was paralyzed from my chest down."
That Friday she was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis.
"The doctor said I had a 1-in-3 chance of a full recovery, 1-in-3 chance of getting a bit better, and a 1-in-3 chance of never recovering."
Neuro Assistance Foundation has helped pay for her physical therapy at REACT- Neuro Rehab in Dallas, TX. Dalia has been through several therapy sessions, and has regained some movement in her upper body and can now feel the nerves in her legs.

"Physical therapy is great, because when you start going, you have the energy you want. You start making progress and reaching your goals. NAF really helped by giving me that option."
Dalia has never let her disease slow her down. She has kept on pushing f or her dreams and left nothing to chance.
"My goals really haven't changed. I still want to attend university and get a good job, but everything is harder now. I have to work at least twice as hard for anything I want, but it's not impossible. I know I can make everything happen."
She has looked into several different universities, but one in particular that caught her eye is UT Arlington. Its campus is easily accessible via wheelchair and has various activities for people who are wheelchair users, including a wheelchair basketball team.
Dalia continues to push towards her goals and achieving everything she dreams about. We at NAF know that with a little help and hope, Dalia, and any other person with a disability, can do anything they set their hearts and minds to.

A Special Note of Thanks from one of our family members

To Neuro Assistance Foundation,

I want to thank you for the wheelchair you have lent me and tell you how it has impacted me.
It enabled me to go to the therapy room and get PT & OT that I would not have had if I had been bed-bound. It enabled me to interact with other patients which was very healing. I learned a card game from a gentleman - that was fun; he would ask the therapists if I was coming to therapy that day. The therapy room has lots of windows and light which was a tremendous pick me up. The chair gave me independence, I was able to go outside and enjoy the courtyard and the fresh air. And the wheelchair gave me the privilege of eating my meals up in a chair. Thank you very much for what you have done for me.

-Kimberly
Kimberly was injured in a car accident and has a C4 spinal cord injury. She needed a loaner power wheelchair to use while she was doing rehab.

Healthy Living

Sixty Five percent (65%) of individuals living with a Spinal Cord Injury are also battling obesity. The increased opportunity for weight gain when living with an SCI are due to the following reasons:
  • Change in body composition- Percentage of body weight as fat mass is 8-18% higher in people with SCI.
  • Persons with SCI have 14-24% lower resting metabolic rate
  • Reduced physical activity
  • Change in hormones
These are a few of the issues which contribute to challenges in maintaining a healthy body. But here are some helpful tips that can keep you slim and trim!
  • Avoid refined sugar
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners- these will stimulate your appetite. Some studies show that artificial sweeteners can actually cause greater weight gain than sugar!
  • Reduce grains
  • Limit your fruit intake, increase those vegetable servings!
  • Eat healthy fats- Omega 3 fatty acids (found in salmon, sardines, tuna, walnuts, and ground flax seeds)

We Need Your Help

Donate ~ Sponsor ~ Volunteer

Change lives; make a difference.

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.
