Hospice 101
Hospice is a special way of caring for people living with life-limiting illnesses. Hospice care provides physical, emotional, and spiritual support for patients and their families in whatever setting they call home. This presentation will define hospice and palliative care, describe hospice care services, explain eligibility criteria for hospice and the benefits of early admission, and discuss how hospices services are paid for.
Presented by:
Nancy Larson, RN BSN
Nancy has been working as a hospice nurse for over 40 years. She has cared for patients & their families in the final days in Wisconsin, California, and Minnesota. Currently, Nancy is the Director of Nursing for Our Lady of Peace Hospice & Home Health Care. She manages a team that cares for both hospice & home health care patients wherever they call home. These arms of Our Lady of Peace help support our residential home which does not charge a daily room & board rate to families. Nancy believes that patients should continue to be treated with dignity & provided comfort in their final days. Focus is on Quality of Life.

Describe Hospice Services And Eligibility Criteria
Describe How Hospices Services Benefit Patients And Their Families
Thank you to all who attended our last Membership Meeting and took the time to offer a few suggestions because they really do matter. They matter because they can help us continue to grow and to better meet your needs. We want to meet your needs because we have a mission. Our MASWA Mission is: "To develop a multidisciplinary community of professionals working in the field of aging who are educated, supported and interconnected so they may improve services and advocate for older adults". Your suggestions enable us to do an even better job accomplishing this mission.
Here is a top 5 summary of your suggestions from our last meeting:
Remain in the same meeting location & post location signs
Continue the Spring and Fall Conferences
Continue networking time to pick each other's brains
Keep CEUs and informative speakers
There were various speaker suggestions - which we will act upon!
We will do our best to continue these items and to implement others. As we seek to advocate for older adults, here are a few ideas that we each can do this month:
Introduce a senior to a safe mode of transportation
Suggest ways to get involved in the community like volunteering
Have a senior tell their story and let them reminisce
Help a senior find a good exercise program
Help a family struggling with senior living arrangements
Give a senior a hug if they'll accept it
Promote intergenerational activity
Help start a senior "game night" of cards and other games
Remember, we are in this together and watch MASWA in 2020! See you at our next membership meeting, February 27!
