The races will go on! Start your engines..

As always, the health and fitness of our athletes, volunteers and team is our top priority. As a result of the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) developments, we are constantly monitoring the updates to assure we are taking steps to keep everyone healthy during our upcoming events. Hot Chocolate Run was last weekend in Seattle, Shamrock Run is next weekend in Portland and there are upcoming races scheduled in every community around the country. Here is what you can expect at WHY Racing including Couve Clover Run on Sunday March 22nd and Spring Classic on April 19th.

What is WHY Racing doing to keep everyone healthy?
  • Hand sanitizer will be available within all porta potties as always
  • We have ordered extra hand washing stations for the event
  • Any staff and/or volunteers involved in food or hydration prep and/or high contact areas will wear disposable gloves and practice correct hygiene and food handlers' protocol as always
  • Disinfectant spray and wipes will be available onsite for our team to wipe down any equipment that will be exposed to a high volume of human contact
  • We are in communication with PeaceHealth Medical, one of our partners, to discuss other initiatives to increase the safety of everyone involved in our events
  • We will continue to follow updates and protocol suggested by the CDC and Department of Public Health to assure the safety of our athletes, staff, vendors and volunteers
What can you do to keep yourself and everyone else healthy?
  • Stay home if you're feeling sick. Email us at [email protected] and we can provide you all of your options including deferring to another event, transferring to another athlete or participating in the virtual race option.
  • If you are at-risk, your immune system is compromised and/or you are nervous about being in a public setting, you can participate in the virtual race option. This would involve you doing your registered distance on your own whenever and wherever you want. You would then send us a photo of your completion of the distance and we would then mail you your medal, finisher's shirt and SWAG bag. We've used the virtual race as a great option for years for our athletes who want to participate in an event but aren't able to actually be there for whatever reason.
  • If you would like to attend the race but minimize your exposure to any possible germs, bacteria or virus, consider carrying your own hydration/gels and opting to fuel up post-race at home.
  • Wash your hands using hot, soapy water for 20 seconds and/or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when you arrive at the event, after using the bathroom, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing and as you are leaving the event. This is the best way to control transmission in normal, healthy adults. Here's a video from PeaceHealth on how to do this effectively.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or cough or sneeze into your elbow.
  • Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid touching high contact areas like doorknobs, railings etc with your bare hands.
  • Avoid the usual high fives and fist bumps with your fellow racers. Instead use verbal recognition until we get past cold and flu season.
  • Ultimately do whatever you can to keep your immune system strong so that if you are exposed to any virus or bacteria, your body is strong enough to fight it. Here's some tips:
    • Sleep is critical to maintaining the strength of your immune system
    • Hydration helps to assure your immune system is functioning well
    • Consume a high quantity of fruits and vegetables to maintain high levels of vitamins and minerals in your diet
    • Exercise also strengthens your immune system so continue with your workouts
    • Increase your intake of products that reduce inflammation and boost your immune system including turmeric, vitamin c, echinacea, apple cider vinegar, lemon, ginger, zinc, elderberry, and/or herbal teas
    • If you are feeling run down, lighten up your training and racing volume and intensity and increase your focus and efforts in the above areas.
We appreciate all efforts to maintain the overall health and fitness of our entire WHY Racing Tribe while minimizing the risk for all. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at 360.314.4682 or [email protected]
