Registration process includes learning choice

A report shared Thursday night with the School Board showed that 4,298 Ray-Pec students have registered for the 2020-2021 school year with the desire to return to school in person.  See the report to the Board

As of today, the first day of school is Monday, Aug. 24. The District currently plans for some students to return to school in person, while others participate in virtual learning.

During the registration process, a total of 1,205 students elected to enroll in the Virtual Instruction Program of Ray-Pec (VIPR).

Another 717 students are not yet registered. (Some of those students may not be returning to the District this year, as it takes some time to account for students who have moved or withdrawn.)  If you need assistance completing the online registration forms, please contact your child's school to schedule an appointment.

The District is now working to create student and staff schedules, as well as to train teachers for the VIPR program.

The District has updated some information about cleaning protocols in its School Procedures for the August 24 Re-Entry Phase.
Alternative schedule for grades 6-12

Because a large number of students seek to return to in-person learning at the middle and high school levels, the District plans to implement an alternative schedule for grades 6-12.

This alternative schedule would allow for fewer students in the high school and middle schools each day. Smaller class sizes would allow for greater physical distancing and smaller cohort groups. In the event a student tests positive for Covid-19, fewer students would be exposed or required to quarantine.

This alternative schedule would help the District meet current distancing recommendations and reduce risk for students and staff.

Alternative schedule
Students in grades 6-12 will be divided into two groups: A and B.
  • Group A - In-person classes on Monday and Wednesday; virtual classes on Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Group B - In-person classes on Tuesday and Thursday; virtual classes on Monday and Wednesday.
  • All students - Virtual classes on Fridays.
Details will be shared soon on how students would be assigned to Groups A and B.

Please note: This plan would only affect students in grades 6-12. Students in elementary school would continue with a full 5-day in-person experience as long as possible.

Other potential adjustment plans

Note: Plans for in-person classes and the A/B schedule for grades 6-12 are based on information available today. Other adjustments may be needed at any time as conditions warrant. Here are some plans that may be implemented:
  • In the event of isolated positive cases of the virus, and as directed by the Cass County Health Department, there may be periodic classroom or school closures with a transition to short-term distance learning for those groups of students.
  • The District could continue providing elementary students with a full 5-day in-person experience by spreading out using space at the elementary and middle schools. In this scenario, the District would transition grades 6-12 to a full virtual environment with opportunities for small group intervention instruction at the high school for our middle and high school students. (This option does not impact students K-12 who had already selected the VIPR option.)
  • The District could implement a full virtual instruction model for all students.

Here are links to the supply lists for in-person classes:
Shull Early Learning Center
Elementary Schools (Grades K-5)
Middle Schools (Grades 6-8)

Because of the variety of high school courses, students in grades 9-12 will receive supply information for specific classes when school begins.

Currently, the first day of school is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 24.
Immunization requirements
Check to make sure your student is up-to-date with immunizations
All students must present documentation of immunization status, including month, day, and year of each immunization before attending school.
  • Kindergarten: Five immunizations
  • Incoming 8th graders: Tdap and meningococcal. (The Tdap helps protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough.)
  • High School: Two doses of meningococcal vaccine by 12th grade.
